Okay, I had to ask around here. Names shouted out so far:

Bull and Bear
Stocks and Blonds

Haven't been to either of those but I like the names.

Almost all Americans millionaires are first generation, self made businesspeople. They went out, created a business, and got rich. They also employ tons of people. Yes, they are better than the poor malt liquor drinking whiner who has 5 kids and wants free stuff.

So if you somehow believe that having a few million dollars in the bank account, makes you 'better' than me, then it just reconfirms my beliefs about you and the rest of the 1 percenter's

So yeah, he worked a full day, probably made more money than you will make all month, and went to a bar AFTER work.

Whatever. I'll take your word for it that he worked a full day, and I'll ignore your claim that he makes tons of money, because I don't give a sh*t. I'm sure others will do likewise and not assume the protesters are lazy unemployable losers simply because they took part in a protest.

Who are you responding to? Not the post you quoted, because that's not what is cited as making that person better. What makes them better is that they worked, contributed to society, employed lots of people, and made a lot of lives better. The few million dollars in the bank (or, more likely, well-invested) is an effect of their willingness to work. If you take one of those people, and one of whiners, strip them both of their wealth and make them start over, the same person will likely still come out with financial advantage.

Your Favorite Token Black Chick:

I'm earning a degree in history. HISTORY. (I know right). But i'm not worried about my job prospects at all. Because I know I can make myself a desirable hire. When I'm totally finished with schooling, I'll have at least a masters if not a doctorate. I'll put myself in that top 10%. But add to that the fact that I don't care about being in that echelon, I'm quite okay. I do what I do because I love it, not for money. Money helps, (not having children also helps, counting the days till tubal ligation and I'm twenty-farkin-four) but with a solid education and a solid drive and upward mobility in my current job, I'm gonna be okay.

/HISTORY my God can you believe it???

... and you're going to pay for all that schooling how? Not every one has access to scholarships, wealthy parents, or whatever fortunate situation you're in.

I used to have the same attitude when I was getting my first Arts degree. Now, 2 degrees (I went back for a technical degree) and a second language later, I'm still running the same risk of layoffs, and have a family to support. After the 2008 crash, my income went down by 15K. My mortgage didn't go down, nor did the cost of food or utilities.

We're doing fine based on good luck, and good decisions. But a little misfortune (another downsizing, sickness, car accident, home reno or all of the above at the same time) and our emergency fund may not be enough to save us from going under.

You're 24 now, and have all the optimisim I had at that age. Someday you're going to graduate. The real world is going to hit you like a truck... and it's going to hurt.

You'll sign your mortgage papers and find the cardboard box on your desk.
Your mutual fund manager will lose all your savings 2 years before you retire
any one of a million currently unimaginable scenarios can occur to you the same as it has millions of americans who shred your same optimism.

I've seen two different Gallardos this week alone (uncommon in these parts) and funny thing is both drivers that I saw literally had tunnel vision. TemporarySanity: Not my blog:

So, my girlfriend of 3 years is extremely pissed at me right now because I won't suddenly become all crunk about politics at her whim, and drive from Charlotte to "occupy DC" this weekend. She came up with this plan today. I say to her, "it's not my scene, my presence won't change anything, you can't go participate in a protest about something you're not passionate about."

She's not angry, she's just "disappointed in me". If I were to go, I'd feel like the biggest toolbag there. I might as well have a sign that says "what are we protesting again?", but it just wouldn't be necessary because my lack of enthusiasm would speak more than any sign. I don't give a sh*t about any of this, and she should know that by now. I'm already resigned to the idea that I'll work until I die - "Oh, so you're just complacent, huh?" farkin' A.

WTF do I do?

Go with her, juggle the sandwiches, cooler with drinks, and whatever else (bring a first-aid kit and eyewash, just in case) and be supportive. You don't have to carry a sign or even be in the middle of the protest, you can spend your time doing a bit of the tourist thing while regularly checking up on her with text messages and snack deliveries. She'll probably still feel a bit put-out that you aren't sharing her passion for what is (to her) the greatest political struggle since (insert history here) but an understanding mate will accept the compromise and respect the support.

Look at it like this, imagine you are the girlfriend of a Con-junkie who was getting geared up and costumed up for Dragon Con with a giant robot costume and replica TRON bike and didn't really give a shiat about all those things but knew it was your Significant Other's super-important worked-on-it-all-year THING. They love it, they need it, and it's pretty much all they have besides you. You don't CARE about the Con, but only don't want to go because you don't have a costume.
Do you:
A. Tell them to have fun, tell them you refuse to go because you'd feel silly without a costume, and leave them to it even though they could use your help with things like getting into costume and/or carrying stuff.
B. Remember that sometimes you do things for the people you love because you love them, and compromise by going (despite feeling a little out-of-place) and staying at the periphery with backup plans for when the Robot Costume's coolant system breaks down and your lover gets heat exhaustion.

'Course I'm just guessing here, I don't know if she's a self-centered biatch or if you're a lazy farker or if this is just a misunderstanding or what. That's something you have to figure out yourself.

microlith: PrinceofFark: Here is a question for you and everyone else bickering mightily in this thread. Do you think you can break into the top 5% of wealth in this country without being greedy?

It goes beyond merely being greedy. It requires active contempt for the rule of law and usually such people are sociopaths. They screw people over and neither understand nor care about the problems they cause, but whine loudly when such misfortunes are visited upon them.

It's why they can complain loudly about welfare, then go begging for a bailout on the public's dime without a hint of hypocrisy.

This is not true. The top 5% in this country has a household income of over $167,000 a year. If you think that a household making that much money is only doing it by flaunting the law and screwing people over... well, you have an awful lot to learn.

But if it makes you feel better, he's also wrong. Being in the top 5% doesn't require greed at all. It doesn't even require luck, although it certainly helps. $167k a year in household income is well withing the realm of "make good decisions and work hard".

But you are seriously closed minded to miss some very clear points about those "poor people having no excuse for being poor".

Sure, there are a number of people that are lazy farks and would love to blame their troubles on "the Man". But that is NOT by a great longshot ALL poor people.
There are SO MANY people that want to work but cannot find it, or are unable. I've been there myself on occasion. I'm a programmer by profession, but layoffs happen... I would take whatever work I could, from driving a truck to landscaping... Whatever would pay the bills. And we still had a hard time struggling to make ends meet. It's not so breezy as you make it sound by saying "get off your ass and get a job".

I am very happy to know that you are so financially stable that you never have to worry about stuff like that.

I'd like to say that you might to relocate to find a better job, but if you're a programmer and you don't objectively suck, you should be able to make money on the 14 brazillion freelance sites out there that post work.

That or you're lying.

Oh, I'm not lying. I'm serious. I've been working as a contractor (for various houses) on W2 for like 6 years. Some contracts go for 3 years, some for only a few months... But when contracts end, it sometimes takes a little time to get a new one. Last time this happened I was out of work for like 3 weeks. The job I have now, I just started last Wednesday. They interviewed my the day before, and they hired me on the spot.

So, I don't suck either! Hahah!

You should be saving money to make it between contracts. Don't give the sob story unless you actually have one.

Not a sob story, dude. Not even at all. I know how to survive. But I don't like seeing people like the person I was addressing directly, lump us all into one category of lazy slobs. It's closed minded, arrogant, and frankly, stupid.

Debeo Summa Credo: microlith: PrinceofFark: Lastly, if these people were doing something wrong, they would have been punished. They weren't, they were actually rewarded with sizable bonuses. I'd say the rule of law is alive and well.

Just because no one is being punished doesn't mean nothing wrong was done. I have no doubt that there are many who are very, very guilty of fraud, but since they tend to be quite rich and powerful (especially the ratings agencies that utterly failed at their job) they get to skip out on scrutiny that might reveal it.

That's a nice conspiracy theory but given the incredible amount of anger pointed at the financial industry (rightly or wrongly), any prosecutor or DA would LOVE to be able to put some financial types behind bars.

To suggest that they aren't because of some political influence is tinfoil hat material. Seriously, do you not think that the NY or CT AGs would not put some of the former AIG execs in jail if they could?

Don't you think Obama and Holder would love the boost in popularity they'd receive if they could put guilty traders behind bars?

The fact is that everyone, including the banks, bought into the bubble and got burned by it. There wasn't any conspiracy.

Wow. There's a lot of Wrong here!

Don't you think Obama and Holder would love the boost in popularity they'd receive if they could put guilty traders behind bars?

Right, which is why they immediately started investigations of various crimes committed by the previous admin as soon as they took office.

The fact is that everyone, including the banks, bought into the bubble and got burned by it. There wasn't any conspiracy.

The banks knew full well that the housing market was a lie, and that the derivatives they were trading back and forth were essentially worthless. Who else knew? Anyone at the SEC who bothered to look. The banks got "burned" the same way a con artist accidentally walks away with all your money. And the knew they would just get bailed out by the gummint when the jig was up.

2011-10-06 06:55:18 PM
Thunderpipes: Bad ones. Don't forget banks were pushed to lend out like animals by Democrats. I don't support the bailouts at all, for anyone, company or individual. You never learn anything if someone always is wiping your ass after an oopsie. And also don't forget the poor dumbass individuals who took out loans they could not afford. Blame banks, sure, but if you don't also blame government and individuals you are being intentionally ignorant.

I know I'm responding to thunderpipes, but jesus farking christ get some new material... the democrats did not force Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns et al to create internal demand for mortgages (any mortgages... since they were packaging them and selling them to everyone... especially institutional investors, foreign investors... etc) they couldn't get enough of them... they created the DEMAND for bad mortgages and incentivised all of these mortgage brokers to produce mortgages... didn't matter if they were good or bad or if the background was faked or if they were interest only or balloons with ridiculous terms... they NEEDED them to bundle into their 'products'... don't blame this on congress and especially not the democrats. (although that seems to be a typical republican/conservative talking point... probably because the real workings of wall street are too confusing for conservatives).. however having said that I believe that home ownership is a good thing... it produces better more stable, less crime communities that people are 'invested' in (and it hangs over their heads until the mortgage is paid off... don't quit your job because the boss is an ass... you might lose your house... your boss wants you to work unpaid overtime... don't complain, you might lose your job.. and then your house...

Bill Murray said I was weird: Thunderpipes: And yes, most millionaires are first generation, self made. Look it up. I am not going to do the work for you, although that is all you guys ever want -- someone else to do the work.

No, that's what you want. You made the claim, now prove your claim and do your own work.

It's not "almost all", but it's definitely "most"

Most millionaires come from middle-class households, and roughly 65% have been wealthy for less than 15 years, according to a 2009 survey of high-networth individuals, published by American Express Publishing and Harrison Group.
