Took me a moment to remember that I'm actually on my Windows 7 netbook and not on my Mac mini.

I use a macbook pro at work, so I see that, a lot. It's like an hour glass icon on windows, letting you know the machine has just enough computing power at the moment to let you know it's computing.

Is it the Eternal Flame one? I don't get it.

Inversely I have the only Mac in my office and I run on more memory than any of the other machines and one of the very very few machines here that hasn't had horrific problems since I started working here. Also I run several programs simultaneously on it with no problems while my boss's computer freaks out if he tries to write an email while XCel and Word are open at the same time.

Never doubt the ability of corporate IT to bog down a brand new machine with unbelievable amounts of crap. i'm running a 3-month old HP laptop at work (Elitebook 8440) and there is so much crap that loads and runs on startup by corporate mandate that running Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook all at once is an exercise in frustration.

What OS was it, and did you or anyone else ever bother to attempt any repairs?

Classic OS 9 and older wasn't exactly my cup-o-tea admittedly. But OS X was a game changer. I migrated over, and only ever bothered to install XP on my iMac since the wife's glucose meter isn't Mac compatible. Macs will admittedly start to run slow if they have software problems, but only once have I ever gotten a system crash on OS X (bomb on 10.1). Every other time it's been 100% due to power failures.

Compared to the Registry on Windows, OS X is a breeze with it's Library folder. Just drop in and delete the extensions and system folders for programs you no longer use, and that's it. If the preferences folder becomes corrupt and prevents an application from starting, just delete the preferences file, and the next time you open the app it will automatically rebuild a brand-new file. That kind of automatic repair Windows doesn't even have.

The only 2 downsides with OS X are the lack of a built-in defrag utility, and in order to repair disk errors you have to boot from the Install CD rather than just scheduling a hard disk repair upon reboot. But it's worth the trade-off.

Other wise I have an old 700mHz G3 iMac. Load OS9 onto it, and it's OK for speeds. Load OS X 10.0 and suddenly it becomes faster. Keep upgrading it until 10.4 (last PowerPC compatible OS) and with each upgrade the damn thing will get faster and faster. OS Improvements for Mac products are worth the price. They don't just add new features, they also figure out how to manage real time data better. Especially when it comes to Dual-Core processing which can load balance threads on the OS level for 32bit & 64bit applications alike no matter what they are. Unlike how in the past to take advantage of the 2nd CPU the application itself had to be written to take advantage of that, i.e. Photoshop. Plus of course it's nice to be able to simply plug things in to get them to work. Not just from an PnP standpoint with devices, but how manufacturers nicely integrate software into the OS X, like they do with Printers and Scanners.

Even compared to the early days of OS X, Macs have become even more powerful computers. Comparing an abused machine in an office is like trying to test drive an abused rental cal. Give a new Mac a whirl and you might be pleasantly surprised.
