About half of the roughly 800,000 missing juvenile cases in 2001 involved runaways, and another 200,000 were classified as family abductions related to domestic or custody disputes.

Only about 100 missing-child reports each year fit the profile of a stereotypical abduction by a stranger or vague acquaintance.

Two-thirds of those victims are ages 12 to 17, and among those eight out of 10 are white females, according to a Justice Department study. Nearly 90 percent of the abductors are men, and they sexually assault their victims in half of the cases.

The media has all the signs and symptoms of someone who has severe Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

\the obvious answer is obvious

Party Boy: Pasqualini said the media tends to focus on "damsels in distress"-typically, affluent young white women and teenagers.

The media's dilemma is that government research shows that victims of nonfamily abductions and stereotypical kidnappings are most at risk of injury, sexual assault or death. "Damsel" cases may be the exception, but they often are the most urgent.

That's because CNN is terrible at news. I don't think they know what the word means.

Its strange to me that this discussion of kidnapped white woman (knox wasn't kidnapped) allegedly points out a trope of white privilege or covert supremacy in the media.

Apparently, this same media force of racism doesn't cover the grossly disproportionate statistics on the subject regarding the tiny fraction of those kidnapped by a stranger (the most at risk)?

Fark has seen these stats, so I wonder where their head is at. is death and murder and making light of kidnapped people funny?

So farking sick of the Amanda Knox crap. Seriously, it should just be a two line blurb but it's all over the effing news.
I haven't turned on any news channels in days. It's ridiculous

You know what. If they stopped going outside dressed as sluts like wearing a skirt and had a male escort at all times this wouldn't be a problem. How dare these girls go out and tempt these poor ill guys. It is clearly not a case of rape rape, but evil teenagers seducing with their wicked ways. Clearly it is an indictment on the freedom for girls being treated as equal when they clearly don't seem capable of behaving and protecting themselves.

And in an ironic twist of fate, the same abusive media mechanics that are largely responsible for tainting the jury and influencing her original conviction will now get another pound of her flesh on the back-end with their endless post-release coverage, interviews, exclusives, "where is she now?", reenactments, etc.

Sure, she'll get paid for some of it, but it's not like she can just get a normal job right now, so she'll need the money.

Certainly I believe the British tabloid's initial gullible belief in the sex crazed murderess angle contributed to the nascent miscarriage of justice, I don't speak Italian so can't say if that was the case there too, but suspect it was/is.
The populist "red top" tabloids here in the UK a malign influence have a pedigree of affecting legal and government matters and erode my belief in freedom of speech.

I think they pretty much are a malign influence anywhere, to be honest. Although to be fair, they'd be much less of a malign influence if folks just read them for the latest photoshopped adventures of Bat-Boy or something like that, instead of, yanno, taking them seriously as if they were upstanding news institutions...

Considering a lot of them are owned/primarily-influenced by the Murdoch/Koch Propaganda Conglomerate, that hardly seems in fitting with the agenda. But why split hairs?

Very true, trouble is there are many credulous people who take their world view from these arsewipe sheets. Here in the UK at least. It's a problem that results in crappy knee-jerk legislation because each of those readers has a vote equal to mine.

The Amanda Knox thing has demonstrated to me that, not only do tabloids pass on and amplify lies, but that they are sincere. They actually believe that bollocks they write!

Most are parents angry with a custody situation.

My only interest in the Knox case was to see it the I-Ties would try to railroad her. A lot of countries like to boast about having put an American citizen in one of their prisons.

2011-10-05 09:56:33 AM
I find it funny that all the comments on the CNN site have to do with is she hot or not? Ohhh the irony of it all...

Oh and I would say she is OK looking, in a Lizzie Borden sort of way.

Now to get to the serious matter of the trial and incarceration! Having spent a bit of time in Italy at various times in my life, it is a very corrupt society, from the top down - look at Berlusconi-so nothing that happened in the A Kno case is surprising, except, maybe, that the 45 year old male prosecutor apparently does not live with his parents anymore?

Lizzie Bordon got off due to a botched investigation and biased court as well.

Nope that's already been covered in one of the other groups.

Only about 100 missing-child reports each year fit the profile of a stereotypical abduction by a stranger or vague acquaintance.

So out of the 800,000:

-400,000 are runaway cases
-200,000 are family/custody-related kidnapping cases
-100 are non-family-related kidnapping cases

That leaves another 199,900 unaccounted for. Where are they?

So cases in the American media somehow had a "spooky action at a distance" effect on cases in the Italian media? That's plain stupid and obviously wrong. Anybody who has followed Italian popular media of the last twenty-five years or so would know that it's become ever increasingly sensationalist. It has nothing to do with things that happened halfway around the world.

A juicy story like Knox's, especially one where there's an awesome tag line like "Foxy Knoxy" is like candy to those people. Stir a dash of sex orgy, some "she's a damn American!" and a pinch Satan into the soup, and you have a media frenzy the likes of which might never be seen again.

Seriously, the media in Italy makes British tabloids look like the Wall Street Journal.

So. I'd figured as much from what I've read of Berlusconi's malign influence and from what I've heard said by foreigners who live there, it explains a lot. Stir in some bigotry, (always goes well with credulous ignorance), and you've got a recipe from hell.
Although in our defence we have some damn good media here in the UK as well as gobshiate media: The Economist, The FT, The Times*, The Guardian and the BBC all have their moments.

Yeah, only white people travel aboard and study. Funny thing about this post is that had you left it at that first sentence, you'd have white guys coming in here to complain about you bringing up race as a factor, attempting to claim that this media situation could have happened regardless of Knox's race, but by making that second sentence, those same people will not have a problem with this because you attempted to insult people of color and the Fark snowflakes are always fine with that.

There were a lot of holes in that investigation as well.

Csb time:

My baby brother came back from the doctor the other day; he said that the doctor said that my baby brother "had the body of a 40 year old". To which, I responded " I have the body of a 16 year old". My baby brother looked at me and I explained, " yes, she's in the bed of my truck; her name is murhpurph". ( For best effect; say the last word like you have a gag in your mouth)

Indeed. They're also apparently okay with ethnic slurs such as "dago" (wait, I believe it was "filthy dagos") and "i-ties". Such fluffy little snowflakes, they are!
