The polls are fun and generate discussion...the same as they do in basketball. The difference is that in basketball there is a real playoff with a real champion. Football needs this too. How long will it take?

Normally I think there's a lot wrong with the coaches poll, but if it pisses off Jim Rome it can't be all bad.

2003-09-23 06:58:00 PM
Perhaps coaches recognize fluke upsets better than the average Jim.

I'm glad he doesn't pick issues that are easy to convince uninformed people about. That would make his opinion so much less interesting and influential.

How does Notre Dame not get a ranking? Don't these people stay bought?

2003-09-23 07:24:40 PM
for those too lazy to read it, this article falls in the "biatch biatch biatch biatch biatch" column.

2003-09-23 09:17:43 PM
Wow, Jim Rome with a legitimate gripe... now I've seen it all.

2003-09-23 09:20:40 PM
Well, there's the problem! Michigan didn't lose. They nearly won.

2003-09-23 09:22:06 PM
Huh? Don't make much sense to me...

2003-09-23 09:23:00 PM
There shouldn't even be polls until mid-October.

Assbag coaches don't know what the fark they're talking about.

2003-09-23 09:23:59 PM
It don't matter Virginia Tech will be on top or second by years end anyway.

2003-09-23 09:25:38 PM
ive been biatching about this for years.

Hey NCAA, ever hear of, CONFLICT OF INTERESTS?

The coaches WILL ALWAYS vote their team and the teams in their own coference higher, because they have a serious interest in those teams being ranked high.

Does anyone really think college coaches watch ANY football besides them and their opponents tapes? Demolish the polls, or have them start in the mid season, or give us our playoff.

2003-09-23 09:27:37 PM
The Vols should be #1. That's the problem. Aught to be only temporary.

2003-09-23 09:27:54 PM
It doesn't matter because these boys will go to the championships.

2003-09-23 09:29:28 PM
UofM should be #1 no matter what, I think that is pretty clear.

/breaks down crying about their recent "near win"

2003-09-23 09:29:33 PM
hmm... on the one hand, I hate Jim Rome and have a knee-jerk urge to disagree with whatever he says. But on the other hand, the coaches' poll has F$U at 6, Michigan at 10, and Oregon way down at 15... which side to I choose?

2003-09-23 09:29:49 PM
oh, and while im at it,

fight on

2003-09-23 09:30:08 PM
Jim Rome has to find something to biatch about leave him alone its his job. (in know way defending him) He is terrible. I dont really think this post is making any logic whatsoever so im gonna stop.

2003-09-23 09:30:16 PM
And speaking of stupid, how does Kansas State remain ranked at all? They did drop 10 spots to #16 after losing to Marshall Saturday, but those wins against Div. I-AA schools dont justify a top 25 ranking and those losses certainly dont. Shouldnt it be a requirement that you at least beat Div. I schools to be a top-ranked team?

Simple, because at this point KSU is better than #17 through #25.

Nobody does bitter like Jim Rome.

2003-09-23 09:31:21 PM
Such crap. Wisconsin was ranked 15, lost and were out of the poll.

Drop them in ranking yes, but not completely out of the poll.

my $00.02

2003-09-23 09:31:43 PM
zmbabwe, they're only playing like they're a college team right now. Regardless of their skills and performance, they're not eligible to play NCAA football.

2003-09-23 09:31:47 PM
haha "no" not "know" i really should not post anymore

2003-09-23 09:31:49 PM
matters. about as important as the opinions above.

2003-09-23 09:32:34 PM
wow. i never knew i could despise someone and agree with him at the same time.

thanks, jim!

you lost me anyways ...

Does the coaches poll have influence on bowl games? ( college football n00b )

2003-09-23 09:33:12 PM
NetOwl:

That hurts.

2003-09-23 09:33:46 PM
I'm with FoamingPipeSnake. Jim Rome is only completely an asshat.

2003-09-23 09:34:46 PM
duncanlidaho
yes.

2003-09-23 09:35:21 PM
These polls make the character of college football. This and the BCS make college footbal what it is. If we were to do away with polls and bowls and institue playoffs, we would turn college football into the NFL, with less talented players.

Oh, by the way.

2003-09-23 09:35:22 PM
Are ALL of these guys on drugs, or are they just not watching the games?

Well, actually, I doubt many of them are actually watching the other games, AS THEY ARE PLAYING THEIR OWN!!!

2003-09-23 09:35:40 PM
duncanidaho:

it might a little on non-BCS bowl games but probably not very much

2003-09-23 09:36:18 PM
shiat, trying again

2003-09-23 09:37:52 PM
I hate this guy but have always thought the Coaches poll was a little weird.

BOOMER SOONER!!

2003-09-23 09:38:00 PM
jhawk1025

What are you talking about? The coaches poll has NO BEARING on non BCS bowls, and only affect BCS berths.

2003-09-23 09:40:34 PM
Michigan had a bad week; it's not like they got slaughtered by Oregon. Not to mention the fact that ND may NEVER recover from the spanking UofM gave them. They lost to Michigan State for christ sake. #10 isn't that far off at the moment.

2003-09-23 09:41:32 PM
theurge14

How do you know that KState is better than 17-25? The only teams they play is Dolly Madison Middle School. How does whooping up on those poor Dollys warrant a top-25, let alone a top-10?

2003-09-23 09:41:58 PM
Jim Rome is a syphillitic ass-crack. That is all.

2003-09-23 09:42:10 PM
Ieatshorts
you are dillusional. Notre Dame sucked last year, and they are worse this year. Michigan has nothing to do with that.

And if Michigan is 10, Oregon is at least 9.

Did you even watch the game? Oregon should have won by 3 touchdowns. The score was close, but Michigan was never in it. -3 yards rushing? Should be out of the top 25

2003-09-23 09:42:25 PM
No, it's right. Oregon's always about 8 spots lower on the polls than they would otherwise be, just because their uniforms are SO FARKIN' UGLY!!!

2003-09-23 09:42:44 PM
oops. shoes, not shorts.

2003-09-23 09:44:32 PM
GO MAROONS!!!!

2003-09-23 09:44:42 PM
Notre Dame obviously did not deserve the ranking they had. Look at Notre Dame's 3 games. Nearly lost to WSU, crushed by Michigan, beaten by Mich State.

Therefore, Michigan's win over ND doesn't look so special. I'll admit, I loved to see ND lose. But now they've lost to a mediocre Mich State team. They never deserved a ranking, and now Michigan doesn't seem so tremendous for beating them.

2003-09-23 09:45:28 PM
Alph

Are you kidding?!? The coaches poll is a very tiny factor in the vast mathematical formula that is the BCS. Though it may have the tiniest effect not enough to make any major mark on deciding who goes to BCS bowl games and who doesn't.

2003-09-23 09:45:57 PM
Theseus
kind of similar to USC shutting out Auburn at Auburn, when they were a top 5 team, and then they go and lose to georgia tech.

2003-09-23 09:45:58 PM
as I steal ricardomontalban's trick ...

Let's see who can name this team. ( hint: they won't be in the coaches poll for a decade, if ever )

2003-09-23 09:46:39 PM
Perhaps Oregon doesn't get any respect because its mascot is Donald Duck. And don't get me started on Oregon State...

/happy that her beloved Trojans are #3.

2003-09-23 09:48:34 PM
jhawk1025 and everyone

does anyone want to help me set this guy straight?

Whats the first component in the BCS? POLL AVERAGE.

That means if you are ranked around even 6th in one of the polls, it will be extremely difficult for you to get a BCS bid. You obviously dont follw college football that much. And poll rankings have no influence on non-bcs bowls, but yes, they are significant in the BCS. Why do you think Notre Dame didnt get a BCS bid last year?

2003-09-23 09:48:51 PM
Jeez, NetOwl did you even watch the Oregon-Michigan game??

Don't just look at the box score and think it was close. They clearly lost from start to finish... Oregon just let them in it for the second half but make no mistake... MICHIGAN LOST BADLY.

2003-09-23 09:49:44 PM
Alph sure, it works the same way. Auburn was clearly overrated. I still think USC look very strong, and they will most likely win the PAC 10. But you can't look at their win over Auburn in the same way now.

What really annoys me is how the polls see an almost loss the same as a win. Florida state is barely undefeated. They scraped by Georgia Tech, just barely. But now they are number 6, and it will take a loss to move them down.

2003-09-23 09:49:56 PM
#22 Northern Illinois University
Go Huskies!

(I know it won't last but it's nice for a team that had a 23 game losing streak a few years back)
