Siberwulf: PC LOAD LETTER: This article and this headline only works if you don't have any actual knowledge of the area and what's being proposed and allow the angry inflammatory words to inflame you and make you angry.

/regardless: suck it, Texas

Let's keep it in perspective. You guys get to have a pretty shuttle. We are about to unload our bat-shiat crazy governor to the rest of the nation.

And the looney-toons who support him are worse than even the most rabid Obama supporter. I mean Rick Perry really thinks he's a modern-day Prophet.

All I've heard from the nut-baggers is 'Obama think's he's God'.... yet Rick Perry thinks he's a Prophet and those same people agree with him

And the idiot tea-baggers only encourage him

I think they only had the one, and it was destroyed.

They could have put the shuttle in Queens next to the Atlas, Titan, and Saturn V booster section. You could have a first rate space museum with just that.

2011-09-29 11:45:36 AM
Better yet, we should have remotely launched the three functional ones into deep space with their cargo bays full of all sorts of Earth stuff.... like Voyager I & II but much larger. That would be much more dignified than mothballing them on various parking lots as monuments to how great we used to be.

/We could convince certain members of Congress to hitch a ride on one too. "Yeah, dude.. you'll be back on terra firma after a couple orbits!!!"

It would have been nice if the Enterprise stayed at the Smithsonian to compare with Discovery. Show the wear on a used Shuttle even when they were replacing parts after every return. It would be an amazing comparason if a space hog.

Even so, something in the center of the country would have been nice since there's already one in DC "the only representation of NASA in the entire Northeast corridor" my foot.

Yeah, the Buran. Only flew once, I think, unmanned. Its hanger collapsed a few years back, completely destroying the orbiter and killing a couple peole. Sad.

* During the bush admin the budget for NSF (National Science Foundation) went up aprox 40%

* During the bush admin the budget for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) went up 20%

* During the clinton admin the budget for NASA dropped 25%

FreakinB: The Intrepid's been there for years without much of a problem...

For a while it was pretty much the poster child for exhibit neglect. It's improved a lot, mainly thanks to a big renovation/restoration a few years ago, but no matter how much they've improved it's a mistake to put anything particularly rare or exotic on display outside.

The shuttle should go to the Seattle Air and Space Museum. Its Boeing's baby, they should be able put it to rest in its proper grave.

Had they done a proper job of building them there would have been two more to display. Amirite?

You're basing "historical" statistics on one (1) Republican adminsitration (Bush II) and (1) Democratic administration (Clinton)? One could just as easily make the same comparison using LBJ and Nixon as the examples and reach the opposite conclusion. Besides, there's more to being pro- or anti-science than just department budgets.

Also, some thoughts on the subject from the Bad Astronomer:

Ummmmm...I never said Bush. I was referring to Texas and it's current governor Rick Perry, who decries any and all federal programs, while the federal government is the largest employer in Texas, not to mention taking more stimulus money than any other state. This was a Texas-vs NY argument, not a Republican vs Democrat federal administration argument.

But don't let the actual premise of the debate keep you from fellating the 'right' side, you clueless twit.

And your facts suck as much as Texas.

Now why do I have this feeling that the real plan is nothing like what these whinny little shiat-kicking Texas are saying it is? And the shuttle Enterprise? It was a prototype that was sued for atmospheric flight testing and it never went to space. It's travelled around the country being displayed for years. So, who cares.

No, there were design changes in the shuttles built for space after Enterprise was built. The original plan was to re-tfit Enterprise to be the second shuttle to go into service. But the changes to the design were too extensive and it would have cost more to re-fit Enterprise than to build a new one.

Well, calling him a twit is a bit strong, but he does miss the point that the President of the United States cannot fund anything. That's the job of Congress. The funding increases noted were enacted mostly by Democratic Congresses and the decreases by Republicans. But I don't think it is anti-cience ideology that drives these things. It's more a matter of money and perceived priorities.

They didn't build a new one. They rebuilt STA-099 into OV-099, the Challenger. This, of course, explains why the Challenger had a lower production number than the Columbia in spite of being the 2nd active shuttle.

Endeavour was built from the ground up from spare parts, though. They hadn't anticipated building another one but the Challenger disaster compelled them to do it anyway.

What's funny is that the loony libs in Seattle wasted $12 million to house one of the shuttles and all they got was a flight simulator and some 8x10 glossys of the astronauts. Ha Ha, here's your expensive video game, enjoy.
Maybe if the aircraft union thugs would allow companies to expand and hire people in other states you'd get some nice things.

pecosdave: After looking over the map I'm still not certain what the criteria was when choosing places for shuttles to go. I mean NY and DC are rather close together.

Right, it's absolutely got nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that Houston was acting with typical Texas arrogance and didn't feel it needed to put up the cash or the effort that all the other bids were required to. Nor does it have anything to do with the fact that NASA is already keeping one at the Kennedy Space Center complex.

Not saying the Intrepid is the ideal location. Personally I would have loved to see it come to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, but I'm a little biased. But to claim interference from the Obama administration, which isn't exactly on buddy-buddy terms with NASA to begin with, is just plain idiotic.

Enterprise's ride to New York is the plane that delivers Discovery to DC. The plan was to fly Enterprise on the SCA from Dulles to JFK on April 17, 2012, then have the mated aircraft sit at JFK for a month while they reposition equipment to offload it and move it to its display location, not a routine job.

That timeline gets pushed back because the newly announced Space Launch System would use parts from the shuttles for propulsion development. This means even more hardware gets stripped from the retired shuttles.

Discovery will probably not be used for this because its hardware is less up-to-date than Atlantis and Endeavour. Enterprise is probably staying put a while longer anyway.

Not to doubt you, but I'm interested in a citation. I'm curious what they could possibly salvage from a used orbiter to re-use on a heavy-lift booster (two completely different types of vehicles).

I'm confused. Have Texans been negligent in taking care of space faring vehicles? Or are you trying to say that Texans are to blame for Columbia blowing up?

scottydoesntknow: I'm confused. Have Texans been negligent in taking care of space faring vehicles? Or are you trying to say that Texans are to blame for Columbia blowing up?

Yes to the former. The Saturn V in Houston was left outdoors, unprotected, for decades, and deteriorated significantly. I'd like to not see that happen with an orbiter.

Enough of the whining Houston. You dont have the best history of taking care of what is entrusted to you. You nearly destroyed the most complete Saturn V in existence because you left it out in the weather for years. Dont claim credit for the shed it's in now. The Smithsonian had to step in, restore the rocket and put it under cover.

www.collectspace.com

From the Smithsonian's report:
"The Saturn V overall is in poor condition. Various external surfaces have suffered exfoliation of coverings and corrosion of internal and external structures. There is also a strong indication of moisture buildup within the vehicle.

Mold and plant growth on and in the vehicle indicates both excessive moisture collection and poor drainage throughout the rocket. Small animals have found shelter inside and are responsible for acidic debris and damage."

NYC could put it in the worst part of town but as long as they put a roof over it, they are doing better than Space Center Houston did. What the politicians dont slow down long enough to acknowledge is that none of the smart people at the Johnson Space Center have a thing to do with Space Center Houston, the tourist attraction that would handle an orbiter should it be provided to them. They need to have a talk with the company running Space Center Houston.
