Cultural differences amaze me sometimes. Here, someone carrying a sword, especially the tabloid favourite of a "samurai sword" will land you standing tall before the Man, and see you greasing some guy's pole in exchange for "protection" and cigarettes for at least a year or two.
Not to mention they usually have the armed-response team out, and the helicopter etc.

Taking race and facial tattoos into consideration, he's likely already protecting by the Mexican Mafia upon entering the prison system (again?).

I mention race, because the gang is racially segregated, and seeks to consume every street gang that enters the prison system. You go into prison, you swear your gangs allegiance to MM for protection, and do favors for them on the outside. In turn, whenever you or your gang buddies are in prison, you're protected.

It's part of the reason there is a brewing race-related gangwar in Cali. You used to have mixed race gangs all over the place, but the predominantly Hispanic/Latino gangs kicked everyone else out to conform to the MM rules.

when I was 16 and stupid I desperately wanted a tattoo. I had such a yearning for a tattoo, and a long list of reasons why I should be allowed to get it (parental consent was necessary under 18).

List of Reasons I Should Be Allowed To Get A Tattoo:

1) I can pay for it myself.
2) It is a design I made myself which is meaningfull to me.
3) It will be in an area which is both easily exposable and easily concealable.
4) Every person should be allowed to decide what to do with their bodies.
5) My self expression is important to me, and with no logical reasons why I shouldn't have this tattoo, making me wait is just cruel.

My dad, who is anything but illogical, said I should be allowed to express myself however I see fit, and that regardless, my design was both tastefull and clever. Befor I could do my happy dance, he presented me with a box of permanant markers, and told me that if I loved this tattoo enough to draw it on my shoulder every day for 6 months, I could get it, and he would pay for it. That seemed like a good compromise.

I lost the chance for two reasons though, none of which involved lazyness. Oh, I drew on my shoulder every day with precision and conviction. First of all, my dad explained that since the image had morphed, (partially getting better at drawing, partially because I was taking out and adding design elements) it showed that I wasn't as prepared for forever as I though. Secondly, prom was coming up, and although I thought that I should be allowed to be bare shouldered there for the last time, my dad didn't budge... if I wasn't willing to draw that thing on my shoulder even during prom, he said it meant I didn't love it to have it forever for the rest of my life.

Important lesson he tought me there. When I have kids I will totally manipulate them like that!

Great story! I like how he handled your dedication to this idea.

My thinking is to relate it to fashion. When growing up, everyone has some article of clothing that is just The Height of Coolness and they wear it and feel like they fit in. For example: parachute pants, or the clothing with the zippers/buckles, or those shirts that closed along the side instead of down the front (why yes, I am a child of the 80s, why do you ask?).

I owned each of these items. What if I had been able to permanently graft them to my skin? Would I love them as much in 1993? How about 2011?

I think your dad's solution makes more sense, though.

/pleased that my 18-year-old is not interested in tattoos

Face tattoos.... why not just crazy glue your halloween mask to your face?

Some of these photo of face tattoos, horn implant, tongue mutilated people is so disturbing. Just wrong... wrong. Someone cant be mentally all there if they would mutilate themselves this way. If you are doing this kind of thing as a business, willing to just take the money and do that.... there should heavy fines or serious jail time involved later.

Yep, the funny thing about regret is It's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done. And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her, "SATAN, SATAN, SATAN!!!"

Things that are most likely wrong. The prison system has always been rigidly divided on color lines. If you are white, don't even think about hanging with anyone other than white boys on the yard. Works the same if you're black. There are also divisions among the Mexicans in California, anyway, based on whether one is from the north or south part of the state. Except, it doesn't break down that cleanly, and really makes no sense at all, because there are Sureno cliques in Northern California, and what gang you end up in depends upon who the guys in your neighborhood are. The gangsters may even admit this if you ask them. Gang wars are about money and power. Same as any other war, actually. On the street, you really never saw a whole lot of race-mixing, either. I'm not saying never, but rare. I can't imagine it becoming a big enough issue to damage the hegemony of La Eme.
