Laser discs can be played on a standard record player, if I recall correctly.

All I know is I tried to fit as many episodes of Treme on a DVD for a friend, and when I got to the point of 4.5 or so hours, it was so compressed it was unwatchable. I had to settle on 3 shows per DVD.

Of course I don't have professional equipment.

My Weeners was to write something sarcastic about "needing" professional equipment for a fine show like Treme....but the truth is that it is a very good show.....so, nevermind.

Season Two was a bit of a let down for me, because that was set in the year I moved to New Orleans, and they missed some important stuff.

I got that for $7.50 at my local K-mart. A hell of a deal!

I like Mill Creek's way of thinking: a ton of stuff for a bargain price. Golden!

Yeah - but a ton of crap for a bargain price is still just a ton of crap.

Was there really a market for SIX of these? Did someone engage in this venture thinking it would make money, or was this the final wish of an eccentric millionare to have these films made and financed with his own personal fortune?

I think they were more of a training ground for writers, directors, and actors. FFS, Naomi Watts and Eva Mendes were in these movies.

They were also dirt cheap to make and were guaranteed to be stocked in every Blockbuster in America because Dimension was releasing them, so there really wasn't a downside.

Maybe they're using double sided discs, like the Tremors movie pack, 4 movies on 2 double sided discs.

PLENTY of bad (entertainingly so) Sci-Fi and Horror collections out there. The Ol' Lady and I pick one up every couple of months or so...usually 4 str82DVD flicks on one or two discs...its pretty shiatty, but a few drinks and 5 bucks for one of those sets is an entertainment bargain!

Aren't all the Hellraiser and CotC streaming on Netflix right now?

2011-09-29 11:30:28 AM
I'm seeing a lot of these no-frills collections at the supermarket and Wal-Mart. Half of them look like the cover has been downloaded and printed on an inkjet. Hell, I've bought black market stuff in Indonesia that looked more authentic.

I've picked up the odd $5-and-under disc just to see what they were like. Some of them look like higher compression. Others look like they were scanned from letterboxed VHS or perhaps they leased the films and did their own scans. Contrast and brightness can be a bit off, as well as the framerate. If you just wanna watch the movie for less than the price of a rental (or the time it takes to download), it's not so bad sometimes. I guess some of the studios are giving access to distributors for a bit of cash. I know it's primarily Miramax that gets the $2 releases at my grocery store.

I think so. It was part of the hundreds of flicks they got when they made a deal with the Weinsteins.
