true story:

I was in Costa Rica on the beach watching the amazing surfers catching really big waves. I had just smoked a fat joint and was thinking to myself "I have not been this stoned in a long, long time" All of a sudden I heard two surfers yelling "help us, help us" in Spanish and waving for me to come over to them while they were dragging what looked like a very large shark out of the surf. As I ran over there thinking everyone was laughing at the way I was running (simply because I was really high). I got closer and saw it wasnt a shark, but a guy who had turned bluish gray in the water. He was unconscious, but had a pulse. I had just finished a CPR course in college and the two surfer guys began giving him CPR. When they began administering mouth to mouth to him, the guy puked, but the surfers just blew the puke back into his lungs and didnt turn his head sideways to clean it out. I was siting on the side thinking "they are doing it wrong", but I was so stoned, I couldnt get the words out nor the straight headedness to jump in and try to rectify what they were doing incorrectly. The guy died in front of his two daughters and wife.

So, just because the surfers in California know how to save the life of a shark on the beach, dont count on them knowing how to save a fat guy's life in Costa Rica.

I havent smoked weed, done a drug or drank alcohol since 98 because of this- no lie You never know when you need to have your best judgement available-- You could be vacation chilling ont he most relaxing beach in the world- a world away from your troubles-- thinking it is the perfect time to smoke a blunt and chill and then Bam! I was going to say that this was a prime example of why drugs kill, no matter how benign. Then I read this part of your post and see you've taken care of that particular disclaimer.

Let's put that into perspective. A man says he got to stoned to help save a life in a country where getting stoned is legal. He says he no longer smokes weed, but then says he thinks it should be legal so others have the freedom to make their own decisions. I would say the man can handle his shiat just perfectly.

People like you a giant morons. If he felt that being stoned off his rocker left him unable to do anything then that is likely what happened. Just because YOU have never been too stoned to function doesn't mean it can't happen to some people. I've been baked into near unconsciousness before...to the point I didn't realize the apartment upstairs was on fire and the firefighters were trying to get everyone out of the building. They were banging on my apartment door which I was sitting next to and I didn't even know or realize. They saw me through the window, busted it, and carried me out because they thought I had smoke inhalation.

That was also when I decided to quit smoking weed and haven't since. Weed affects everyone differently just like alcohol affects everyone differently. It is a pretty mature thing to say "You know what, I can't make reasonable decisions with this drug in my body, so I'm not going to do it." If you can handle it, kudos to you and to each their own. To be snarky about someone else and their choice just makes you an ass.

the point is a guy tells a story and learns a lesson from it, but is still objective enough to let everyone else make their own decisions regarding using drugs. Had he told a story about watching someone die because he was so stoned he screwed up the first aid he was administering, I am sure you would be the first person to say "I am a trained first aider and have used it several times. So....just stopped by to say this is not at all surprising. I've found surfers to be some of the most caring conservationists out there. The older the surfer, the more they love the ocean and ocean life. As a kid living is southern Cali I learned as much from them as I did my earth science teacher...
