Why would Scots object to not paying for alcohol?

My grandma lives in a dry county in the Dallas area plus their is a provision you can't drink outside. It really sucks to visit because the local bar is 20 minutes away (they don't sell liquor) and the closest place to buy beer is forty-five minutes away, but all you can do with it is take it bake to my Grandmothers house to drink with miserable relatives.

I was so glad when I turned 18 and my parents couldn't force me to go visit anymore. I haven't been there in nearly ten years and have no plans of ever going. I wouldn't have seen any of them for ten years either if they hadn't all decided to come crash my wedding, but that's a different story.

wait - so they already have laws against being "antisocial" (which, as a Farker, that scares the hell out of me) and (presumably) for being drunk in public or being a public nuisance, the defensce this councilman puts up is that it will "give the police an extra way of controlling alcohol-fuelled disturbance...".

"Extra" is a synonym for "unnecessary".

Wife and I spent a few days of our honeymoon in Glasgow last June. In a corner of the hotel room was a shelf on which sat decanters of whisky, gin, and sherry, with a sign:

The use of your minibar and the decanted spirits is complimentary. Please feel free to pour yourself a drink.

Carlton George Hotel FTW.

Mr Garrett said the main focus of the legislation would be on allowing the authorities to crack down on yobs.

Can some Scottish person explain what yob is? Drunken youths?

it's crap. "It's a known fact that beer will kill a Scotsman but if you give him whiskey it'll keep his innards polished and working well for decades."

Is this just an open container law? It sounds like it is, but they gave it a stupid name and now people are up in arms over nothing

A yob is the opposite (think backwards) of a a good boy - so a trouble maker, thug, rabble rouser, etc.

Are you saying that "open container law" is not a stupid name? "Alcohol Free Area" is far clearer. But then I'm Scottish. And anyway, the concept of yobs in Falkland is somewhat laughable. It's a tiny, pretty village where nothing ever happens. The palace is well worth a visit.

Yeah, yobs are kind of like neds (non-educated delinquents). Both are common in Scotland.
