I had a 110 gallon tank a few years ago, the main fish were several cichlids. One fish, who earned the name Godfather, owned half the tank. He would swim all alone on his half the tank, and chase and bite any other cichlid that dared cross the invisible line. I started feeding on only the group side, and after about two weeks he owned that side of the tank and all the other fish had to move to the other.

Wait, what were you trying to do? Force the fishies to get along? Dude, there's a reason why they call it the law of the wild!

Shocking. I bet if you kept a cat in only one room you'd get the same result.

They are FISH! Who gives a shiat how happy or angry they are? They're one step up above plants. They're plants with fins.

I had a 110 gallon for ~20 years. Just one fish lived in it throughout (in three different US states). Bought him when he was the size of a quarter in Ann Arbor, he died in Houston, TX. Tried many times along the way to introduce a few friends (of the same species and size at the time) for him to hang out with. This was followed by a few weeks of epic chasing (pretty much 24/7) followed by the new guys being found in chunks at the bottom. I stopped trying at some point. And he continued to get bigger... Trying to bring him friends was a fool's errand from the start.

FTFA "The welfare of aquarium fishes may not seem important, but with that many of them in captivity, they become a big deal are still unimportant," project leader Ronald Oldfield, an instructor of biology at Case Western Reserve University, said in a press release.

The Gourami is called the Coronal and he's made it clear he's in charge.

Rest of the fish are 8 tiger barbs, 3 green corys, 3 giant danio's, and 3 oto catfish.
All live plants in a 40 gallon tank.

We had a male betta fish when I was young.

To get it to flare out its fins which looked really pretty, we would flash a mirror in front of it and it would see its reflection, thinking its a competing male. Betta fish are very territorial.

Apparently, doing the mirror trick is enough to drive a betta fish batshiat insane, as it thereafter knows there's another beta fish lurking about but can't get to it.

In the proceeding months, betta fish started beating up all the other fish, chewing on their fins, fighting them, eating them, chasing them around. He chewed a goldfish's face clean off. So we placed a divider in the aquarium to separate the betta fish from the rest of the fish. But betta fish eventually learned to jump over it and resume his psychotic rampage, though we could never catch him in the act.

One morning I went downstairs to check on the aquarium and I found betta fish on the floor near the tank, stiff and dead. Sometime during the night, he had jumped clean out of the tank in a supreme, suicidal act of insolent defiance.

Betta fish are hardcore.

Do you mean the Colonel or is it actually referring to something having to do with a corona?

I'm surprised people are just figuring this out now. In zookeeper and animal shelter circles, this is called "enrichment'. You give the animals stuff to do and they are less likely to go crazy.
