Great, now Disney is going to re-release their entire catalog in 3D.

2011-09-25 10:18:06 AM
it's sunday morning. how do they know how many people will be going to the movies today already?

/was planning on seeing moneyball this afternoon, actually.

I saw it yesterday, very good movie. But I couldn't help but be amazed that they managed to tell the story of the Oakland Athletics without a single mention of Mulder, Hudson or Zito. I think you once see Hudson's name on a jersey, but he's never actually mentioned.

Abduction outgrossed Killer Elite?

That's... disturbing.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Abduction outgrossed Killer Elite?

That's... disturbing.

The reviews haven't been kind to either from what I've seen. But I imagine a bunch of teen girls dragged their mothers off to see Abduction.

The English Major: The reviews haven't been kind to either from what I've seen

With a 3% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, it got biatchslapped by critics.

But I imagine a bunch of teen girls dragged their mothers off to see Abduction.

Maybe so, but that doesn't excuse... well, a lot of things.

Among others, the appearances of Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Maria Bello. I mean, yeah, you gotta take paycheck projects, sure, but this? You need the work THAT badly? STOP GETTING INTO GAMBLING DEBT AND THIS WON'T BE A PROBLEM

And what the hell is John Singleton doing directing a piece of crap like this? Dude, you directed Boyz n the Hood and Four Brothers! Why? Hell, he had more dignity when he was directing 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Oh god I hadn't realized they were in it either. Were they featured in the TV commercials at all? It just looked like Bourne light to me.

I have read Moneyball, and do want to see the film. My dad wants to see it next weekend.

Second time I've seen this mentioned; is this Jimmy Traina from SI? I still think it's not important to not see particular players mentioned when the movie is all about the front office.

Molina and Weaver are in the commercials, at least.

The fact that they are in the same movie with Taylor Lautner whimpering "NOT IF I FIND YOU FIRST" is a frogdamn shame.

As soon as Sigourney Weaver appeared, I thought, "WHAT? Why the hell are you even IN this?"

I have read Moneyball, and do want to see the film. My dad wants to see it next weekend.

Yeah, I'd be keen to see Moneyball. It's been chalking up some fairly solid reviews.

Taylor Lautner puts the Ab in Abduction.

It's a fun movie, it's by no means Citizen Kane, but it's still an enjoyable film.

But of course, people love to hate on others who are having fun.

Stay classy picking on teenagers.

Saw Moneyball yesterday, it was good, didn't fall victim to the cliches which plague most baseball movies. It was more of a human story and less of a baseball story which makes the overall story much stronger and easier for everyone to relate to in the end.

Yeah, the only clear shot you get of a Hudson jersey was when he's getting shellacked in that 20th win. At another point you see a starting pitcher whose last name begins with H, but it's hard to tell if it's Hudson, Harang or Hiljus.

I am not that dude. I just noticed it is all. I get that its about the front office, but you would have thought that they would have said something like "Look, we still have Zito and Hudson, we're not that bad off, blah blah blah." Those pitchers were utterly dominant.

Yeah, that was one of the dings I had on the movie, pretending all they had was garbage so their 20-game win streak and division title would look that much more amazing. Very good overall though.

I saw the film saturday afternoon at the Park Street cinema in Boston, and man, did they ever do a good jorb targetting their audience. Sure it's a Brad Pitt film, so you get the ladies (My wife insisted on coming along), plus it's like a love-letter to Boston as well, with all the frequent mentions of Youkilis, Damon and, of course, the penultimate scene where Beane meets with John Henry to talk about winning Boston a world series. Cleveland, Minnesota and the Yanks all get some honorable mentions, but if they'd worked in more NYY fetishism the movie would have been the best fan-supported film in history.

As it is though, it suffers from multiple-creator syndrome, losing Sorkin and Soderburg was definitely a blow, and it shows in the uneven pacing and a few scenes that just flat don't work. Oh, and the Pepsi/Sony Vaio product placements are way too obvious for a film that is supposedly plot-driven and thoughtful.

Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and even liked Jonah Hill, who I was concerned would be too much of a ham, he actually did a fair job hitting the right mix of fear and humor. Go see it, baseball fans will love it. Oh and the criticism of the film short-shrifting the pitching staff? That's direct from the book as well, and one of the main flaws of Moneyball in novel form.

Im curious, what scenes did you think didn't work? I can only think of one scene where I actually though "this wouldn't happen", and that's when Bean goes to Mark Shapiro in his office; just seemed weird he would travel to Cleveland just to talk trades.

I thought the visit to the lockerroom scene where Giambi was doing a striptease, and the hackneyed and cliche speech-throwing-stuff bit was predictable, boring and left me feeling flat. It might have been true, but it didn't work that well, besides having a giggle at Jeremy Giambi acting like a moron. The "we are learning to take pitches" montage was also laugh-out-loud bad, I had that South Park song going through my head alll throughout (although to be fair, that's an overused device in many a hollywood film). There were too many Beane-being-Beane scenes without enough anchoring dialogue or setup (Like when he's just driving around, doing donuts in parking lots). The movie suffered for having alot of these placeholder scenes, although they might have helped the pacing a bit, they did nothing new in terms of development or exposition.

So it's the #1 new movie in the country?

2011-09-25 12:53:09 PM
Oh and I almost forgot: Instead of actually taking a minute or three to talk about the math behind the theory, we get treated again to the "Beautiful Mind"-style montage of charts with numbers and such as. Like in The Intarwebs films when people "hack the planet" and you have code scroll overlay while the camera spins around a guy (or hot chick) in front of a monitor. Lame stuff, that, you can do better in a film based on a book that's about educating people about math and baseball, business and economics.

I thought the scene with the scouts did a fine job of explaining it - its about getting on base. What deeper stats do you really need to know to make the drama work?

It was either Peter O Toole, Michael Caine or some other actor who's done a tone of movies including some real stinkers. And long after those bad movies had been released, the actor admitted they just did the film for the money. Why not? DeNiro has been in such slumming movies as Meet the Fockers, and Rocky and Bullwinkle. I bet he was happy to make some easy money.

Killer Elite's not a bad film for anyone looking for some shoot-em-up, car-chasey action flick goodness, but it does suffer from three of the major problems that plague those kinds of movies right now:

1. Shakey-cam
2. Quick cuts
3. Being too serious, but Jason Statham being in it pretty much tells you that from the start.

The supporting characters (minus Robert DeNiro, who feels shoehorned in) are nice though.
