If you want me to stay I'll be around today...

Too bad he's broke but he did say he chose to live in the van. Some of those camper vans are really nice.

That's rather cold.

Addiction is a helluva thing to go through. Also, from that article, it seems he's got some serious psychiatric pathology going on... sounds like he's got some flavor of psychosis/paranoid schizophrenia.

The tag is appropriate. He's a national treasure.

Why feel sorry for him? He seems pretty content. You can't take material possessions with you, after all.

Headline: Sly Stone is living in a van

Sly Stone: I do not want a fixed home, I must keep moving.

Translation: Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

2011-09-25 10:26:00 AM
When he was on top of the musical world he didn't care enough about his bandmates or his audience to show up on time for performances and when he did finally show, incoherent as an adjective to describe his behavior and demeanor is a huge understatement. He took all that talent and goodwill and pissed it all away on drugs and I can't see how the SAD tag is at all deserved. As a matter of fact the tag should read DESERVED.

2011-09-25 10:27:52 AM

Highway61Revisited: That's rather cold.

Nope. Still nothing. His contributions to music do not garner him sympathy when he squandered the fortune that so few are given the chance to earn. That goes for any rags-to-riches story. If your own poor decisions cost you your fortune, you earned it. And while addiction is without a doubt one of the biggest struggles a human being can possibly go through, I don't think anyone's ever gone into the drug scene as a celebrity not knowing the risk.

I really can't believe he is still alive after all the abuse his body has taken, but then I guess Keith Richards will need someone to play with after all the rest of the world has died.

In his defense, it is a really nice van

2011-09-25 10:40:44 AM
My understanding was that he has a ton of unreleased music that a fan got to hear a while back.

The fan came back and said it was all next level brilliant shiat. So farking release something already.

Even if you don't want to release your music, geez, just get Madlib and some others to do a remix album based on old stuff for you.

This guy has the potential to make any amount of money he wants.

I thought with the lastest Rocky movie (Rocky Balboa) that he made more money?

rock star, movie star that did too much drugs and wasted his life away? very unique story. maybe he should make a movie about it so other people can learn that this could happen.

Except, you don't know you'll be an addict until you become one.

Addiction, psychosis, paranoia... these are pathologies rooted in biology, not totally under his control.

A thousand times THIS.

NOBODY wakes up one day and decides, "I think I'll become addicted to a substance that will kill me slowly, and along the way before I die a painful, horrible death, my continually eroding thought processes will manifest in my losing everything and everyone I hold dear to my heart, and just for kicks, make me a menace to myself and society at large, greatly increasing the chance that I will kill other people in the process. Yep, sounds like a winner. OFF I GO!"

If you know about addiction, you get this. If you don't know, you just don't know.

He's so elusive that apparently no one knows this.

Stone has been difficult to pin down for years. In the last two decades, he's become one of music's most enigmatic figures, bordering on reclusive. You'd be forgiven for assuming he's dead. He rarely appears in public, and just getting him in a room requires hours or years of detective work, middlemen and, of course, making peace with the likelihood that he just won't show up.

All of the Cocaine that he has smoked over the years has eaten his brain and left him paranoid and mentally ill. I remember once I saw a documentary about him and they had said for a few years he was living in Hawaii and playing trombone in a hotel band under a assumed name because he was afraid that the FBI was after him and he was hiding out. From what I understand he does have some money and has a little property so he shouldn't be homeless, however when his paranoia kicks in he takes off and is very hard to find. And most of his paranoia revolves around the FBI.

Lots of poor Americans are happy about this, because it makes them feel better about themselves.

Mainstream American politics and media do a good job of pitting the poor against the even poorer so they have no idea who the real enemy is.

The main reason he is broke is because he got basically conned into selling his music catalog in 1984 for $1 million dollars. The man who bought it? Michael Jackson.

Sooo I knew the Clash talked about something like that, and Googled Clash down by the river. Of course it's in London Calling he says he lives by the river. RIGHT when the results page came up, London Calling began playing on Pandora (set on the Damned). What makes that a little spooky instead of just concidental is that London Calling has some relevance in my recently ended last romance - it was a dark and horrific thing, as she was an actual psychopath, thanks for asking - and I've been rather avoiding that album. *shudders*

To be fair, the FBI did have a hand in farking with many public figures back in Sly's time...especially if they were advocates of multiculturalism and equality - something he was known for through the composition of his band.

If you got "conned" into selling your catalog for $1 million dollars and you live in a van, your problem was not Michael Jackson.

And say what you want about MJ's personal life, but the man was a schrewd business person, just ask Paul McCartney.
