I hope it's good. But I don't have any unrealistic expectations.

Do the masses really have the attention span for a story-driven mmo?

I'm not sure if I do either.

Meh, too many griefers in mmo's.

I refuse to buy another Star Wars game until they make an actual 1-to-1 lightsaber game. The technology exists, and its name is Kinect.

The Star Wars Kinect game being released in December has lightsabre duels and Jedi mind-trick gestures. I've pre-ordered it.

If it's a huge failure. Within a year or two.

If it's even moderately successful. Not anytime soon.

Oh, that on-rails thing? I saw a demo trailer and wasn't too impressed. Let us know how it is come December, though.

I was all set to preorder this. Then EA pulled their shenanigans. Only available through Origin? Fark that.

Everything EA touches turns to shiat. Bioware is quickly becoming played out. Oh look, another KOTOR. I bet next they'll release another Bioshock title or a sandbox title. Yawn.

You only need Origin if you buy the game through Origin. Pre-order via Amazon, get your key by email, tie it to your SWTOR.com account and you're done. When early release opens up you'll download the client via the TOR launcher.

Ok, so you can swing your arms. But can you WALK? Or are Kinect games going to be like your body is mounted on rails and pushed through a funhouse? If the future of gaming is just standing there and waiting for stuff to jump out at you, no thanks.

A companies first stab at an MMO? It has the fan base to draw a lot of initial support, but I personally doubt it will have the content or the class balance to keep people interested for very long after they reach level cap.

Probably would be easier and better with the move, but without force feedback you won't have a 1-1 game.

Have any of you guys even played KOTOR? It is the best RPG ever. Better than Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Oblivion, Fallout 1-NV, and all of the Baldur's Gates, COMBINED. It even has a better damn story than the original trilogy.

Yep, I was quite keen for it until I saw those gameplay videos. It looked like a crappy WoW knockoff filled with Resident Evil 1 quality cutscenes.

It's a little unfair to compare it to Chrono Trigger and FFVI, as those are RPG's of a totally different style. I will say I'm looking forward to this, but I won't be buying it until at least a month or two after release and reading some actual gamer (read non professional reviewer) reviews.

KOTOR is a good game. But it's not that good by any reasonable measure.

10 bucks say the TOR servers keel over and beg for a quick death because of the massive influx.

2011-09-24 01:34:46 PM
If SWTOR is not ready and good at launch then the game will be in serious trouble. Gaming fans are picky and Star Wars gaming fans are even worse. Any errors, any mistakes, and they will immediately put out negative reviews. I've seen the previews and as much as I like Star Wars and getting involved in a universe like that it just looks like World of Warcraft. You'll be doing similar quests, similar missions, and the fighting will look exactly the same. A bunch of characters wildly swinging things with over the top effects for anything they do. Additionally, in a world where there can be Jedi and Sith how can you even hope to fight them as a regular soldier or mercenary/smuggler?

The only difference I hear from people is that there will be voice acting for almost all the characters. Ok...awesome...I guess...not anything radically different except the company put a lot more time into a small aspect of the game.

l'm planning on playing to get through all the storyline and epic, KoTOR 3 shiat that I can do alone or with a buddy. I don't plan on playing this like an MMO, I plan on playing it like an online KoTOR 3. If I have to pay an extra $30 for the two months of enjoyment I'm going to get out of this game then so be it, KoTOR 1 was one of the greatest RPGs of all time and this better live up to my expectations.

(protip: guild wars 2)

Not quite a WoW clone, but uses the same base model that all MMOs are using. The innovation comes in it's story and companion characters. There's no quest text to skip, you get fully voiced and interactive dialog where you actively make decisions throughout (ME/DA style). When leveling with a friend you all participate in accepting and turning in quests, and you can even bring them along to assist you with your personal instanced storyline if you choose.

The companion system is the other big change, with 5 unique per class, each with a backstory, fully equippable and controllable (with good AI when left to their own devices). You can bring one with you at any point in time, the rest stay on your ship which you can send on missions or have them craft. When grouped out in the world or flashpoints (instances) you can fill missing slots with companions, meaning a 4-person instance only needs 2 actual people to run.

While it also has a crafting system, item modification, PvP (Warhammer style) Planets/Warzones - if you don't give a rats ass about story (and companions) and skip cutscenes in games whenever you can, then you'll find little in TOR to interest you. If you have always wanted an MMO where you no longer start skipping quest text by level 15 since it just becomes so tedious, then TOR is worth looking at.

Also, according to beta testers:

This game has met or exceeded my expectations, and I will buy the game when it comes out. 70.33% (1574)
This game has met or exceeded my expectations, but I will not be buying it when it comes out. 1.21% ( 27)
This game has not met my expectations, but I still will buy the game when it comes out. 9.08% (427)
This game has not met my expectations, and I will not be buying it when it comes out. 3.17% (71)
Neutral--I don't feel strongly enough one way or the other to make a decision now. 6.21% (139)

I doubt it will be. I've seen so many so-called "WoW Killers" come and go, that I'm just not bothering to work up the enthusiasm anymore.

Besides, you, me, and everyone with a brain stem knows that it's gonna be the same old grind of "Bring me five wookie pelts and ten Jawa scrotums".

IMO, I have much more fun playing TF2 (and it's free).

DING DING DING plus content you can't do by yourself. Content that FORCES you to team up with other people just to continue the STORY. Or you can literally just skip it.

Yup, they copy WoW and then wonder why everyone gets tired of it within a couple weeks.

BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN DOING THE SAME STUPID GAME SINCE 1999!

Mmorpgs are creatively dead and it's Blizzard's fault.

I think that people need to readjust how they are thinking about the game. Initially I was really not too excited about this game, but then I thought about it a bit differently.

Instead of thinking of it as a MMORPG, I'm thinking of it as KOTOR3 that requires a persistent connection. As a MMORPG this game doesnt sound too exciting because its really not adding much beyond what WoW does, and WoW was actually pretty derivative when it came out years ago. But in a non MMO RPG, its really all about story and feel, which is what Bioware does well anyway (well, other than DA2).
