The way I see it, the worst possible thing is projecting it onto the body of the wrong French Moroccan.

I think I can see where he's going with that pic: like he's becoming one with the word of God. Akin to that whole "the body is the temple" stuff.

Or he's just a massive attention whore.

2011-09-21 12:24:35 PM
Meh. Nice chest hair though. I love the caption "Is he seeking fame?" Jeez, an artist trying to get attention? Stop the presses.

Muslims need to lighten up if this is the kind of thing that upsets them.

Nice to know I share the same appreciation for French Morocans that ArkAngel does (came in here to post the same, though he hooked us all up with more images than I was going to :D )

Stop using religion to whore yourself (paradox?).

I don't know...the a/c could stop working? The cheese trays could be delivered late?

He already did it with the bible. *yawn*
He needs a new schtick to attempt to piss people off if he plans to stay relevant for another 5 minutes.

2011-09-21 12:28:54 PM
1. Did he get a lot of protest when he did it with the Bible? I'd be curious to know. Wouldn't be surprised if he did, of course.

2. I'm also curious to know what words ended up overlaid on his penis. Was it "Allah" or something silly like "locust"?

2011-09-21 12:29:50 PM
Male artist or female? This is important.

The real question here is how are they going to blame this one on the US?

Pretty sure nobody ended up dead. Just a lot of noise.

This is exactly why 20-something "artists" deserve to be collectively regarded as idiots until they prove otherwise.

2011-09-21 12:35:16 PM
As a non-religious American who ate McDonald's last night. (I'm not proud), I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to care about this...and I don't. Wake me up if a bomb goes off.

2011-09-21 12:35:42 PM
There are times when the line between "artist" and "professional attention whore" is blurry.

This isn't one of those times, he falls firmly into the latter category with no overlap into the former. Doing something stupid and ridiculous and snapping a photo of it doesn't even reach the level of "found art". I wonder if he's related to the Khardashians.

2011-09-21 12:36:32 PM
"Koranic Inlay" is a nude self-portrait in which verses of the Koran are projected on Lahlou's body, including his genitals.

So, the number of verses could vary from photo to photo?

2011-09-21 12:36:48 PM
I know little if anything doesn't offend Muslims, but come on.
Talk about going after the low hanging fruit.

They're just words. The sooner humanity gets over wishing death on people over words, the better all of us will be.

Or we just glass parking lot the whole place.

The latter. Otherwise, why reveal the art prior to the art show?

He's done similar work with the Bible, and he's almost pathologically fixated on culture, gender, and religion as artistic themes. From his own mouth:

My work is, for a great part, autobiographical. I am one of the major subjects of my own work, I'm at the crossroads of two cultures, an western one coming from my Spanish mother and a Muslim one from my father, living in Morocco. My work also aims at finding impossible connections between the two, trying to position myself, to acquire certain knowledge, to create new nostalgias - if that's possible. So clearly, I'm using symbols that are dear to me, which were given to me, sometimes slightly imposed on me, but I was never forced to do anything. You cannot force someone in Islam, although you might want to sometimes. The Muslim aesthetic is something which really strikes me, which I chose and I try to mix with the Western one. This is how you really get to see how the West and the East co-exist.

He's a mediocre artist, attempting to gain attention by using the old "controversy as art" cliche. He attempts to deflect that criticism by claiming his work is "autobiographical," but he's just another performance artist slapping meat against his head and screaming about how this represents his true angst or some such - there's little real "art" here.

*laugh* Beautiful.

Dated someone like that. It definitely informed my opinion that you have to be able to at least draw a recognizable picture (sculpt, sing, etc) before deciding that you no longer need to.

Well if the purpose of art is to invoke emotional response, then I'd say he qualifies (but then I like modern art).

Fine - then invoke the emotional response at the art show. Releasing his "art" before the show means, quite clearly, that he hopes to somehow get ahead of his colleagues when it comes to attention.

Here's a question - is he showing just random quotes of the Koran, or is there at least a friggin' theme? Is there a context the observer can glean from observation? Is there a conversation between artist and observer? No?

Well, self-centered, self-absorbed, and unable to demonstrate how this differs from a common protest, or just being an asshole, is no way to go through life, son.

To me, art is a conversation between the work and the observer. He doesn't appear interested in a conversation - without any other context on which to rely, he appears to be merely indulging himself in a conversation he's having with himself. The observer isn't involved, engaged, or drawn in to that conversation in any way - and so, to me, what he does isn't art. It's masturbation.

Better option:

2 Kings 4:24: Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.

Well put.

Mind you, some artistes (the E is for ego) would argue that just because YOU didn't get the conversation, blah blah blah. They may have merit... But I still don't care about their art. :)

My personal example is that I don't like art that doesn't look like something... But Nude descending a staircase evokes something in me. Therefore that's art, but The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even is not art.

YMMV as always.

That there's just some beautiful examples of the feminine form.

More artistic than the AW with the Book of Lorgar projected onto him.

FormlessOne: stuff on involving a conversation doing it for you

That's cool and fair enough. I admit it is frustrating that the intentions aren't mentioned in the article, but I don't know if they ever have been elsewhere (or will be with a nice little placard). Artists don't always attend their exhibits.

I won't be rushing out for a print for my bedroom wall. But that it's out there provoking discussion and response, is enough for some.

Modern art is very subjective. I don't think we'll be getting the definitive answer of what counts in a fark thread :) (or anywhere else for that matter).

Christians don't seem to freak out so much about the Bible, or "the word" so much as they do the image of their sky hero puppet... Hey Zeus... or whatever his name is.

There was a crucifix (having the corpse still attached) in a jug of piss, yes, that set them off.
Also, more recently there was a painting done of the image of the son of God that was painted using elephant poop, or some kind of fecal matter.

Anyway, Christians don't seem to care so much that you use their awful book to prop up a klunky table, just so long as you don't replace the leg of that table with a wooden Jeebiss.
