Yesterday, Drew was asking me about some of the most epic threads on Fark. Talking to the TFers I got links for them and I was thinking that we should have some sort of Hall of Fame on Fark that has not only the Headline of the Year winners, but also some of those infamous threads. Not just the greenlit ones, either, we have plenty of incredible threads that never made the main page (in fact, more of those than greenlit threads). We could also include some of the threads that spawned memes on their own, like UFIA, and I Work For/Getting a Kick Out of This Reply, and Likely To Have Trouble When the Oil Hits the Anus. Those all came out of specific threads, and it might be nice to have those set aside somewhere.

Anyway, here are this week's headlines for ya.

the most epic threads on Fark

The Sgt. Crash thread (1406056) should not be overlooked in this effort.

How about taking the headline's example and FINALLY taking "biatch" off the censor filter list, huh? It's been acceptable language on television for at least 25 years now.

Honestly. What the fark?

How did you get that past the filter?? This is a test of the emergency biatch system. This is only a test. If this had been an actual biatch, you would have been given instructions on where to go and whom to biatch to.

This. To be honest, I wish they'd stop censoring all the "curse" words. I highly doubt the number of young children logging on to this site is as high as the mods apparently estimate.

I think it's to avoid setting off filter warnings for those farking from work. After some of the shiat I've seen discussed here (*ahem* 2G1C *ahem*) I can't imagine us being concerned that Little Jimmie might accidentally see the real B word.

how about those alt outings / "deleted for trolling" threads in the politics tab?

I couldn't tell you why it was done in the first place. It seems to me that all of the filtered words were used when Farkers argued with Farkers in threads, but that's just an observation. Maybe it was related to workplaces (as mentioned above), maybe it was related to keyword searches. No idea, but at this point I find it to be kind of an endearing thing that would make Fark feel less like Fark if I saw straight-up profanity in threads. I don't have virginal ears, but I personally don't mind the filter.

The list I'm doing now is greenlit threads, but that's one of the memorable redlit threads.

I saw a turtle is a classic.

As is the legendary .hot cocoa sampler box thread.

I don't believe the filter ever had anything to do with children.

downstairs: +1 on the hall of fame.

With a cool hallway looking thing that you can "walk" through. I can already hear the coders' brains exploding when I propose it.

benjordan: The one with the wooden folding chair and the issues along with that.

That's on the list. The Ballsack Conundrum thread.

Show_The_O_Face: Slighty off topic but could we get a new tag for headline of the week? This way we can save the fark blog for when Drew or mike have something prolific to spew.

Probably not, since they don't use theirs too often and this is a fairly regular event. You can see from the headline what it is before you click the link.

The thread with the guido posters, I believe it was on the heels of one of the Gotti kids having their photo account hacked, had me in tears. I know it's dated now but damn that was hilarious.

I have all three of those threads, thanks!

As for Fark's searching sucking, that may have been the case once, but it's much, MUCH improved over where it was a few years ago. But it only searches headlines, and if the headline doesn't have the word that you're thinking of, you're out of luck. For instance, the infamous Ballsack Conundrum thread has the headline was simply "I'm stuck to my chair. I'm so very scared. Help. (Details In thread)"

I think it works excellent, and I use it at least ten times a week. Threads do get archived after a couple months, though, so if it's an older thread, you need to click the box that says to check the archived threads. I missed that one at first. Email me if you have questions, I haven't had any problems.

2011-09-20 05:13:28 PM
I'm not sure if the politics thread that devolved into a discussion about tacos counted as epic, but maybe look around for that one.

Maybe that pickle picture thread? That was some good stuff.

And of course the original "Getting a kick out of these replies..." one.

A few nominees for the HOF:

Salsa in the shower
Dynamite Monkey
The original Ha-Ha guy "get it out of your system before we ban him" thread
Admiral Ackbar PS thread
"You'll get over it"

The difficulty with any picture related thread will be massive amounts of broken links.

Unfortunately, old PS threads don't hold up well because the third-party image hosting isn't there anymore, either deliberately to save bandwidth or for some other reason. The original pickle incident was in this PS thread (new window), but for obvious reasons it was cleaned up to the point that there's nothing related to it anymore

Yeah. Didn't some dude archive it and kept the photos on his server? That's how I found out about it.

Seriosuly, if you do this, it would be one of the better "timewaster" sites out there.

We've discussed a lot of things. There's a way to favorite threads already, and there's already a way for TFers to +1 headlines, so we're sort of hitting it from both sides, at least with the people that use those features. The current thing being worked on is a way to favorite (and possibly even share) awesome comments.

This is probably a dumb question, but where are we at with voting for Headline of The Year? I voted for a few different months but haven't heard anything since then. It seems like the sort of thing I'd be able to find but I'm coming up empty so far.

Setting up the first threads always take the longest. I've done voting threads for mainpage headlines from Dec 2010 through May 2011 so far, I need to get June's stuff queued up (hopefully this week), and then I'm gonna start the subtab stuff.

The real HOY (I use HOY, all the other mods/admins use HotY) voting threads will be greenlit starting around December 1, and I'm hoping to have the last of them done by December 12 or so. No later than December 15 for sure.
