Yeah, the guy is kind of nutty. It's not even that he's against gay marriage that was the deal breaker for me. It was that he advocated a violent overthrow of the American government if they ever legalize it.

Then again, I guess it's sort of like the Mel Gibson thing. He may be a hateful lunatic, but his stories are still great. I guess you have to divorce the art from the artist on some level.

Not necessarily. You don't go to scifi cons for the con, you go for the ridiculous partying. I went to one small con about an hour south of Seattle a few years back. I was at the con for 30 minutes before we went to the hotel party. An entire FLOOR. 24/7. Free entrance. Free beer (5 kinds, from a homebrewer with like 20 kegs there). Free mead (3 kinds, same guy). 2 full liquor bars, free of course. And an atomic slushie machine.

Nerdy DJs (seriously I heard the eurobeat mix of Dragonstea din tei, aka the numa numa dance, and the floor erupted in dance as soon as it started), absolutely wasted partygoers, and a wet tshirt contest that was...better than all the times I've been to strip clubs, combined. Me and the DJ did jello shots off the winner's tits later that night, and at one point I took a swig out of a bottle of snake wine some dude snuck in. Seriously. Grain alcohol in a golden bottle with a pissed off dead cobra preserved in the booze.

Best party of my entire goddamned life. The con itself was a huge pile of fail. Though I did chuckle a little bit when I saw a whole farking TROUPE of anonymous running around with the afros and suits.

No, don't get that impression. I went (paid) for the first time this year. There are families all dressed up, groups of guys, groups of girls, kids, old people, everyone. It's big. There's jailbait yeah, but their all dressed up in a costume so its ok to look and aint nothing wrong with looking when there's something to see. There are lots of flirty, legally hittable women present, and the fun starts late at night when the kids are all gone home.

Cons are fun. The age demographics are much wider than you expect. It's also a fun excuse to take a day or two off and go for a 4-day mini-vacation.

It's one of those deals where the horror stories make for great reads on the 'net but, at least in my experience, the reality is more like "see if there's anything interesting for sale, listen to a few interesting people talk, drink and play Dominion for the next 5 hours with friends I hadn't seen since college."
