Spongebob Squarepants target age group is children ages 6-11, not 4-years old. Seems to me that would make the data flawed. They also only had a study group of 60 children, which is far too small a demographic to get accurate results.

FTA...Nickelodeon, owned by Viacom International, which produces the cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants," released the following statement to CNN when asked about the study. "Having 60 non-diverse kids, who are not part of the show's targeted demo, watch 9 minutes of programming is questionable methodology. It could not possibly provide the basis for any valid findings that parents could trust." It pointed out that the SpongeBob cartoon is designed for 6- to 11-year-olds, not 4-year olds, like the children used in the new study.

Nickelodeon is correct, the University of Virginia researchers, not so much.

So sitting children in front of a hyper active show full of colors and loud noises makes them less likely to pay attention than putting them in front of a tv show that's calmer and slower paced?

Not even close. Try watching children's programs aimed at younger children. Yo Gabba Gabba has to be the worst offender.

Spongebob at least sneaks some adult humor in for the parents who watch the shows with their kids.

I'd rather watch Caillou than Sid the Science Kid.

I think it's the kid's speech patterns that make me want to punch the TV.

Bathia_Mapes: Nickelodeon is correct, the University of Virginia researchers, not so much.

Totally agree. And I find it interesting they picked Caillou as the other test program since it really isn't as popular as other programs aimed at kids that age. In fact there are dozens of Nickelodeon shows aimed specifically at that age group which are definitely learning shows. Caillou seems more like a bedtime story where Dora the Explorer has more of an educational. A more interesting studied would have compared those two shows.

Then again my sister had always let her kids watch whatever is on Disney, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network without any particular care to which age range the show is appropriate for. My guess is most parents these days do.

I find Spongebob incredibly annoying, but less so than U of V's pointless study. I'd have a lot more respect for academia if they liquidated this pointless research and focused on stuff that actually matters. However, there are useless people eager to protect their jobs, so we'll get more of this crap.

Bingo. Sure Spongebob is "intended" for 6 and up, but most parents are crappy enough that there are many a 2 year old parked in front of it.

I have no idea. I always thought Blue's Clues was a more quality show (yes I was a teenager who watched that show. I also enjoyed Lazytown in college). Parents tell me Dora is more educational. I'm guessing because they "learn spanish" though my nieces both grew up watching Dora and they can't speak Spanish at all.

causes ADHD ? I see no definitive causal relationship at all in the study. I do see a correlative statistic, but for all we know, we are looking at a whole new issue for the snowflakes to be protected from: ADHDTV. Did they test with old SD and new HD Spongebob episodes and compare the results. I want to know.

The only cartoon shows for that age range with any redeeming social value is Jacob Two Two or Pearlie.

2011-09-12 03:36:39 PM
It can be (and most likely is) both.

The study sucks *and* Spongebob is watched heavily by children younger than the target demographics, making it a legit avenue for study.

That said: the findings sound shockingly trivial. Is anyone surprised that kids have more trouble concentrating on a written test after watching a fast-paced cartoon than a slower one? You could put the kids on a playground for nine minutes and they'll have more trouble concentrating than the group who were sitting and reading for nine minutes. Shall we fire up the campaign to yank playgrounds?
