As a professional used book dealer I could provide an expert valuation...

Although it looks like they got close to what I'd expect to pay for 2000 ex-libris books on "cooking, crafts, and animals" from thrift stores or library sales. And on average what I'd be able to sell them for.

Read it when I was at good old Concord-Carlisle HS in the 70s. Thought I was a revolutionary or something.

As someone who works in a library, we'd be charging a lot more for the value of those books. Something on the order of $35,000-50,000. Granted, that reflects the value of the book as new, since that would be the cost of a replacement for us. Then, if they'd been checked out, tack on a $25 fee for our trouble (instead of the usual $5 late fee after a 10-day grace period).

Authorities searched the Vista home of Maria Natar, 44, and found an estimated 2,000 books from Carlsbad and San Diego County libraries - most of which were about cooking, crafts, and animals.

So, that's, like, what, 642, 646, and 636 in Dewey Decimal terms?

Before I read the article, I was expecting it to be about someone who was on a personal censorship crusade to remove the "filth" from the public library.

That doesn't sound like someone looking to sell the books. That sounds like someone who didn't understand the concept of a library and was just a hoarder.

OK, at what point does a librarian say, "According to our records, you've checked out the entire letter K"
