/No one will ever want to play defense for the Wings again at this rate
//The headline was clever. I'll give you that.

Jesus. I didn't think about that. Between them, Vlady and Steve Chiasson....yikes.

Had Semyon Varlarmov not been traded from the Caps he would have been on board.

Both confirmed.

Sigh. Poor guys. Poor everyone on that plane; I saw a video clip of the crash site - don't think they'll be finding any survivors.

2 survivors, 1 died in surgey. No info on the 2nd who was a crew member.

That's sad to think about. The Caps got a pretty good deal out of it, though. Best of luck to him.

desertgeek: Sad news. According to an article I just read "Officials said player Alexander Galimov survived the crash along with a crew member" Link (new window)

That article also notes that former NHL player Brad McCrimmon was on the plane and did not survive. He was a coach for the team.

Former NHLers: Brad McCrimmon, Karlis Skrastins, Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek, Alex Karpovtsev, Karel Rachunek, Jan Marek, as well as Devils prospect Alexander Vasyunov and Red Wings draft pick Stephen Liv.

There are conflicting reports about Ruslan Salei, but it is likely he perished as well.

There were two survivors, a crew member and Alexander Galimov, a forward. But there are also conflicting reports about whether or not Galimov died at the hospital from his injuries(burns over 80% of his body, for starters).

This has got to be one of the cruelest headlines in Fark history. LOL!

As for the story, this is horrible; first time something like this has happened in my lifetime.

Three things come to miind:

1 - I have missed mikaloyd and his humor since the playoffs.
2 - This headline was way more tasteless and better than mine.
3 - This news sucks in a really really big way.

Just got off the phone with a family friend in the red wings organization: they have already contacted NHL headquarters about wearing a tribute of some sort to McCrimmon on their jerseys/helmet for at least the first two months of the season.

team meetings/skate-arounds have been cancelled for the rest of the week, and Babcock and several players have been trying to contact McCrimmon's wife and family at home and no one was there,so the team is currently canvassing the area in efforts to console the family and surround them with friends and loved ones in the aftermath of this.

/big red wings fan and knows a lot of players and coaches. Once I heard what team it was I was calling friends in the organization to find out what was going on.

2011-09-07 01:26:55 PM
So, the lesson here is that you don't combine the two former Atlanta hockey teams?

My apologies to those adversely affected by my premature ruination of Locomotive Breath and also to Jethro Tull.

update (already): NHL head offices are discussing the matter of letting any team or player wanting to pay tribute to wear a sticker on the helmet and/or possibly a small patch on the shoulder of the jersey. They are already discussing whether to just make it a league-wide tribute considering the former NHL players team affiliations.

Terrible tragedy. A number of former NHLers on that place too.

I think I read somewhere that all of the North American pro sports leagues have secret (or at least, unpublicized) disaster contingency plans in the event that an entire team gets wiped out. Emergency dispersal drafts, and the like.

That's a photo of me and Pavol Demitra taken 11 yrs ago at an NHL exhibition game. Yeah, I look like a dork, but he was the first NHLer I'd ever met. He was a pretty classy dude from what I remember. RIP Pavs. You will be missed.

They probably should make it league-wide. There will just be too many players and teams affected by this for there not to be one.

I'm reading that both survivors were "critically injured" so it's entirely possible that they won't survive after all (if they haven't passed away already).

update #2: Mike Illitch has made it clear that the McCrimmon family will be taken care of by his family and the red wings organization for as long as is needed. Also ,expect the season to be dedicated to him and those lost in the crash, so Carlin and Liam will likely be seen around the team a lot in the coming months.

Same here - even tried ESPN to see if it was on the ticker seeing as how it's sports news and all. Ended up getting updates from Detroit News and Free Press seeing as how there were former Wings on the team. Just terrible but on the plus side young stars won't be in a hurry to bolt to the KHL for more rubles now.
