(Uproxx)   According to Louis C.K., George Carlin stopped him from abandoning comedy during a low point in his career. If this is true, then George Carlin is an even bigger comedy God than we all thought he was   (uproxx.com) divider line 122

Rodeodoc: Louie CK is about as funny as warts on your dick.

Actually, he's as funny as warts on your dick.

ZeroCorpse: myschief: For you palin-americans that hate Louis C.K, stick to your Jeff Dunham or Larry the Cable Guy or whatever it is you like.

I hate them, too.

Actually, I haven't seen many good comedians lately. When Carlin died, a lot of the funny went out of the world.

But if you want a list:

Janeane Garofalo (in the 80s, Not now.)
Richard Pryor (always)
Eddie Murphy (again, in the 80s. Not now.)
Steve Martin (in the 70s. Not now.)
Gilbert Gottfried (in small doses)
Robin Williams (in the 80s. Not now.)
Flip Wilson (old school, but good)
Redd Foxx (old school, but awesome)
Mitch Hedberg
Andy Kaufman (in small doses)
Rodney Dangerfield
Eddie Izzard
Dave Chappelle (before he went nuts)
Chris Rock
Sam Kinison
Billy Connelly
Craig Ferguson
Jon Stewart
Bob Newhart
Penn & Teller (they count. Sort of.)

But no. Not Louis CK. I hate his act. I don't like him. I lump him in with guys like Tim Allen and Jay Leno.

Has anyone on this thread ever heard of Dave Attel? If not, you really should check him out.

Oh ok. You're trolling. You almost had me so you get a 7/10

Comedy is, of course, subjective but Louis CK is EASILY one of the best stand-ups out there.

My favorite stand-ups right now:

Louis CK
Chappelle
Bill Burr
Patrice O'neal
Kevin Hart

Bill Burr is hilarious in my opinion. As is Louis CK.

You can take that list, and add Jim Norton to it and make it mine.

/also, Stephen Lynch

Ikimasen: Mitch Hedberg got pretty popular, so it embarrasses me to mention him, but I spent a lot of time as a high school freshman getting his delivery down.

You're a tool. Move out of high school some time.

ecmoRandomNumbers: I just don't find him funny anymore. His discriptions of his sexual experiences (which seems to be most of his act) are a great appetite suppressant.

I was right there with you, until I started watching/listening to some of his recent (post-divorce) material. He has emerged from it with much more love towards his kids and much less pain from his failed marriage... none of that "marriage is a death sentence," downer stuff. Much funnier, to me now.

I loved TFA's video of his tribute to George and also why he used to do that really soul-crushing stuff: his soul had been crushed.

fatalvenom: Soup4Bonnie: Here's a funny guy.

I am so happy and enthused that you didn't link some tired, trite Bill Hicks video.

I will never understand Fark's incessant infatuation with Bill Hicks. That guy sucks the biggest slab of horse-cock ever.

//Tool is my fav. band, MJK is God etc.
///But I can't agree with that shiatty logic
////Bill Hicks sucks the life out of cancer patients

I'm with you on this. Maybe Hicks was an innovator of sorts, but I still find him entirely unfunny and uninspiring. Maybe I just hate 80s stand-up no matter how "edgy".

Now let's address this bizarre Christina Hendricks fixation...

I actually had Jimmy Norton on the list but took him off because I wanted a top-5. He's great as well.

How so? When you can expect idiots to say "Oh, and I love Mitch Hedberg" because a bunch of other people did too, then to say so without qualification would leave me indistinguishable from an idiot. How does that make me a tool? It seems like you're a tool for calling people names on the internet when they didn't do anything at all to you.

You would figure after 2 show cancelations people would get the idea and stop giving him money.

You actually care that some of us would judge you as a pack follower that you are embarrassed to admit liking something that others like, even though you really like it.

Everything cool in history has been loved by at least one asshole. Accept that sharing a taste for something that assholes like doesn't make you one and move on.

tricycleracer: Season 2 of Louie sucks.

Have you lost your mind? I mean, we're all entitled to our opinions, and respect thereof, but to make that assertions leads me to think that you're either not prepared for what the show has to offer (i.e. you're expecting a turn-your-brain-off 22 minutes, with a laugh track just in case. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it's not what you're going to get.), or, you're not mature enough to fully grasp what the show is telling you. I don't say that as a insult to your character, just that it takes a certain level of grown-up-ness to appreciate what 'Louie' has to say. I'm not a parent, so I'm sure I miss a lot of subtle things in the kid-related scenes.

To write an entire episode centered on the idea of ending a life thought not worth living, or one showcasing the importance of honesty to oneself (his love letter to Pam in the market), is just so far beyond what we'd normally see on TV that it feels like a blessed mistake that we get to see it all.

I didn't say I was embarassed to like it, I said I was embarassed to say it. Mostly, I was trying to qualify my statement to avoid some asshole saying "You only like Mitch Hedberg because all the douchebags with acoustic guitars in college liked it" and change the conversation from talking intelligently about standup to personal attacks at me.

TravisBickle62: The greatest comedian of all time is a guy who does stand up once in a great while in a country-western bar on the outskirts of Dallas, he never reveals his name, but you don't know dick about comedy if you haven't seen one of his shows. Maybe 500 people in the whole world have seen him.

Yeah I used to be into him, but now I am into this guy only like 20 people know about.

Season 1 was great. Amazing, even. This season is a meandering mess of a narrative with predictably shiatty situations. You KNEW he was going to fark up the movie pitch because that's what Louie does. You KNEW he was going to get 50 bananas. You KNEW staying out late on Halloween was going to turn bad.

Sure, I'm not mature enough for Louis C.K.'s dark and brooding middle-aged nosedive. I'm much happier watching a 30 year old man talk to a dog.

KierzanDax: This clip is why I'm a Louis C.K. fan. (NSFW Language)

I couldn't find the clip, but the one that made me a fan was where they're in bed and he finally starts to open up to her about something, going on and on, and she says to him "You're not going to stop, are you." Then reaches under the sheet and starts jerking him off, and he stops the convo mid sentence. Too farking epic.

Carlin is so Goddamned good.Remembering back to my Fark baseball days, I'm going to favor the Jersey Carlin over my hometown boy in Louis. That said, funny is funny, and it lives in the northeast.

"Who the fark is George Carlin..?!"

One of the greatest comedians of modern times. Unlike Hicks who is thankfully forgotten.

/Bill Hicks is the Margaret Cho of comedy.
