If he did it in the character of "Donkey" from the Shreck movies and they CGI'd a donkey over his head. or all over him, maybe it won't be so bad. But it'll prolly be Pluto Nash with a few Klumps thrown in.

I'm sure he's still hysterical, however he'd have to start over with stand-up to really remind us of it.

I have no doubt that if he spent a year (or two) doing standup in clubs he could come up with a killer hour of comedy. That being said, there's no reason for him to be funny. He gets paid (and a shiatload I might add) for sounding like/being Eddie Murphy.

Wanting Eddie Murphy to be funny is like wanting a new Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. Sure, it'd be awesome, but it's not going to happen.

He made a shiatload of money, got married and had kids. He's not going to be as funny and edgy as hungry 20s Eddie Murphy. It just doesn't work that way. But it's the Oscars anyway. When was the last time that somebody that was funny hosted the Oscars? I'd say the pressure to be funny is officially off.

Whether or not they're actually funny depends almost entirely on the writers they get, but all of these people are quite funny

And the rating will go down regardless of who's the host; the host is just a convenient scapegoat. The issue with the Oscars is the musical numbers tend to stop momentum in the program and a lot of the skits fall flat. Which confuses me because you'd think there'd be enough good, funny writers out there who could make the Oscars great.

Cut the program time so that it doesn't last until midnight, reduce the number of skits and maybe even consolidate the best song performances into a medley. And please let the writers cut loose with their talent, instead of writing a show for the 50 and above demographic.

Pluto Nash did suck, as well as....

Norbit, Meet Dave, Imagine That, I Spy, Beverly Hills Cop III, The Haunted Mansion, Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle, Dr. Dolittle 2.

His record the past 15 years is sketchier than a Lindsay Lohan vacation to Colombia.

Not sure why anyone would host the Oscars as any of the characters from their movies since no one in the past has really done that except maybe for a few seconds in a sketch, but thanks for playing!

You know, for all the chirping that goes on around Oscar night about how the ceremony is just one big, continuous backslap for an industry that sucks, why not go all the way to below sewer line level for an MC who defines "unfunny" and "suck" -- Dane Cook? Maybe they could get Carlos Mencia to award the best foreign language Oscar.

Yes, if they had someone who was funny and cut back on the musical routines, we would care.

Meh. His good movies outnumber the bad by far and most of those are mindless kiddie fodder, not intended to be incredible works of art. Seriously, this guy's R-rated catalog is pretty damn good. So he likes trannies, big deal, keeps your mom in work.

Cool story bro. Glad to see that when you got nothing, you go for the mother. Keeping it classy!

Actually, looking at his filmography on Wikipedia, of 37 entries I would consider 14 good. I forgot to mention Vampire in Brooklyn, Harlem Nights, Life, etc, etc. You are really retarded if you think his overall Hollywood career has been more good than bad.

The last decent movie Eddie was in (not counting Shrek) that I saw was The Distinguished Gentleman (1992), although I didn't see Dream Girls, I think people liked that.

You got me there... bro. Except for the SNL work, standup, writing/producing, and other appearances. Not to mention one of the best dance songs ever (new window).

OK, I was kidding with the last one. The rest of it's true though.

The problem with the oscars isn't the host or the writers - its the nominees. Most are not successful in terms of ticket sales which means most viewers do not have a preference and thus could not care less.

Plus, with all the bazillion gossip and celebrity sites, there's no "charm" anymore of seeing the stars out and about and there are now about 8 million "award" shows every year, so the oscars are no longer the super bowl.

and, the winners are just BS - Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan? Judi Dench winning the same year when she had about 5 lines in the whole movie; or, Alan Arkin winning for Little Miss Sunshine when he was only in the movie for about 20 minutes, with 10 lines?

the Hurt Locker was a great movie, but James Cameron worked fro years and developed new technology for Avatar; awarding it to his ex-wife was nothing but h-wood telling Cameron he's an a-hole.

Don't forget Forrest Gump over ...I would say Pulp Fiction, most would say Shawshank Redemption but both were better than that almost-full-retard movie.

Wow. I did not realize that was him or that he worked with Rick James! I guess it just goes to show that all the best techno mixes are based on 80s music.

@Mugato - you're right, I forgot about that year - what an incredible list of movies! I would have voted for Pulp Fiction as well, but all three were amazing films. However, Best Director should have definitely gone to Tarantino. Zemeckis had two characters (Gump and Captain Dan) to mold and direct, but just think about how many characters, ergo actors, and stories QT had to wrangle in Pulp Fiction.

I saw the the trailer for his new movie with Ben Stiller and was psyched for a split second because I thought it was his brother.

I just wanted to say that his new movie(the heist movie with Stiller) looks like a reinvention movie for Murphy. He's playing a character that is more inline with his older characters(notably 48 hours since he's a convict) and he gets the be his old smartass self in the role. If the trailer is any indication it could be that Murphy is getting back to his old self
