List fails for including Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

2011-08-30 12:11:18 PM
Mostly bands I don't listen to anyway.
Beastie Boys - License to Ill? I thought that was their good one, though I'm far from an expert on them. My little brother had that album, though he must have been about 7 when it came out.
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn.. one of the few Pink Floyd albums that I don't think I've ever heard. I bought most of the rest, but was never that big on the ones before Dark Side of the Moon.

I like Zevon's 1st album. It's no "Excitable Boy" or "Life Will Kill'Ya," but it's good.

No, but I do hate you for saying "hate ON us FROM this" instead of "hate us FOR this".

I love Pink Floyd. I enjoy most of their music, I have more live albums of theirs than I have studio albums of any other band. I didn't like Piper. There's several good tracks on there, but as a whole it is one of, if not the weakest album they ever put out.
It set the tone for what the group would become, but IMO, they became great the moment Syd left the band and Waters could write tunes and Gilmour could let loose.

I'm surprised Pablo Honey isn't on there. Considering what Radiohead became it is an extremely questionable.
Showbiz?
Maybe Jimmy Eat World's first album? They had somebody else singing and weren't even close to their Clarity/Bleed American levels of awesomeness. I don't know if I consider Jimmy Eat World a "great" band or not, but Clarity and BA are awesome albums.

Most of the bands in this list aren't "great," and the ones that are had less crappy debut albums than the ones that aren't.
So, a total fail.

There are actually some pretty interesting choices on that list. The first Bowie album, for example, is spectacularly awful in every way. And no one is really disputing the Lou Reed selection, at least not so far.
But yeah... as much as the "Piper"-era Floyd isn't really my thing, putting it on a list like this is straight-up trolling.

Beck sort of had 3 debut albums all released on different labels in 1994, I think.

Great Bands? Ok, U-2 maybe, and Pink Floyd...Bowie, maybe. Warren Zevon? Good, not great. The rest? No. Not.
And the first Beach Boys album (the first Capital album) is actually quite entertaining. 'Surfing' was a hit.

They are two very good albums. Though I don't regard Tom Linton as "someone else singing". Switching Jim to lead vocals was the right thing to do, but Tom is very much integral to the band.
Anyway, they suck now. Well maybe not really, I'm not sure. Their last two albums went full on emo-pop, and that's not for me. Good luck to them though. See how magnanimous I am?

And regardless of where they went, Boy was a really good album IMO.
Frankly, there's a lot of metal bands that would make this list... it seems like many a) don't hit their stride till the 2nd or 3rd disc, or b) a severe lack of money can sometimes make debut albums extra-ungood.
I'd add this to the list:
Yes, that's heresy to some fans, but they didn't really get the ball rolling until MAYH imo.

I was always told to stay away from it when I initially got into Radiohead. I really don't mind it as an album though it doesn't exactly hit home like some of their others. The only real hint to what they're going on to is the final track "Blow Out" and the distinct sound it carries compared to the rest.

Wrong. It has some great tunes (if not great drumming) on it.
