FTFA: "I do look like this and if I become prime minister, the support rate would not rise, so I would not call a snap election. A loach has its own abilities even though it cannot do as a goldfish does."

He appears to be conflating aesthetic appeal with ability by using a fish metaphor...

Japan is weird. How are you gonna pick a guy based on his appearance!? Who you can have a beer with is a much better indicator. Duh.

/Does anyone here actually know anything about the guy that isn't in ... this article?

They've had five prime ministers in the last five years, and this guy will become number 95. Does it even matter?

A bad translation, I suspect.

I read his name this spring quite a lot (although mostly because I was Googling for news of the fate of Noda village in Iwate, where my ex has family and I once visited, after the tsunami half wrecked it). Anyway, he came across as a competent official during those events.
It probably helped that his portfolio (finance) had relatively straightforward challenges--stabilizing markets through cash injection, making sure there was money for relief efforts--but he certainly could have effed it up and he didn't.
Prior to the tsunami, I have no idea.

Well played.

Oh man, a whole other Star Wars angle to play with. Nice.
I foresee lots of fun to be had in future headlines.
