Before asked, I will give you one thing wrong with the finale that should not be debatable. The Ajira flight takes off while Jack is still trying to put the butt-plug back into the island to restart the golden light.

Jack inserts butt-plug.

Golden light restarts.

Jack climbs back out of the cave despite being pretty much dead.

Jack walks back to the same place he was found which was probably at least a mile away.

Jack is about to die and the dog shows up.

Ajira flight flies over-head.

From the time Jack puts the plug back in until the time the dog shows up the Ajira flight isn't long, long, gone? If the the time from plug until death was a minute, or even less than 10 it might be believable. That series of events would take at least 15-20 minutes and Ajira is still around?

Yup. If you fight, you'll look like an asshole if you beat her up, and you'll look like a pussy if she beats you up. Can't win so you may as well make like a tree and get the fark outta there.

Everyone who loved the ending is just trying to justify in their mind wasting over 3 days of that show (and that's taking commercials out). I ducked out after the end of the 1st season and only came back at the last, but my girlfriend caught me up and after it she was pissed.

The reason the Lost finale sucked, in my opinion, is because it failed in both of the areas that made the show so strong earlier in its run (character and mythos). I've watched the show from start to finish again after the finale, and I still have to conclude: the showrunners were brilliant at setting up the story, and terrible at paying it off. Oh well, I enjoyed it while it lasted.

They weren't dead already. They survived. They all died at various points afterwards, Jack after he saved the island, Hurley many many years later after caretaking the island. Kate and Sawyer and the others escaped and died back in the States.

After dying, they were in purgatory experiencing a shared dream of the island. The dream begins during the time shifting. The purpose of the dream is for them all to cultivate acceptance for their traumas and trials. One by one they do, starting with Desmond. Desmond works to "wake" them up.

After they all wake, or come to accept the reality of their deaths (and lives), they gather in the church. From the church they move on to the true afterlife.

All of this is explained by Jack's father.

Personally I thought it was a great finale. Most shows go out with much more ineffective bangs. BSG is an example, a show that took all the drama and plot of the preceding years and turned the entire thing into a big boring lecture about God and "everything happened because God and now we make modern earth". It was trite and thoughtless.

Yes, there is religion in the final Lost episode and even a moral of acceptance, but it was a non-denominational spirituality and a much more effective dialogue on life. Each character respectfully and with thought, each receiving screen time for important character growth and development, for closure on each story. It was nice.

Personally, I think Lost's biggest mistake was the mythology backstory episode. It was uncreative and boring. I usually applauded Lost's reluctance to use cheap CGI (minus smokey), but this was an episode that screamed for fantastic things. Instead we get dippy and dopey walking around in sack cloth, and a very cliche Able-Cain story. Personally I had hoped for something more epic, clashes of universal energies and cosmic convergences and big flashy awesome things and transforming immortal entities fighting over the existence of the world, Jacob and Smokey being the personifications of such.

You can say it was good, you can say you loved it, you can say lots of things, but perfect is one of the things that is actually quantifiable. If someone can find one thing wrong, it's not perfect, right?

I LOVED it. Thought it perfectly fit. If you didn't like it, chances are you had something else on mind so much you couldn't except anything else. I kept an open mind and walked away happy.
The music, camera angles, acting and end was a phenomenal piece if tv.

I wouldn't know as I've never read or watched Twighlight. As far as I know it starts out full of suck and ends that way. But Lost was awesome from the start and lots of people who followed it the whole way through have issues with the ending. The vast majority of their criticisms are dismissed as inaccurate based solely on the content of the last episode(s). Which, to me, says that they either didn't pay attention to it or failed to fully grasp the concepts presented. YMMV.

yeah, I liked the ending of Lost. I maybe would have liked to see Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Lapidus, Richard, and Miles getting safely back...somewhere, LA, I guess, but even the supernatural weirdness of the ending was okay with me. the show brought in the giant smoke monster pretty early, it's not as though it was totally grounded in reality and then went totally loopy, the supernatural crazy was just part of the story.

I'm happy with the finale overall. Although I will agree with the previous statement that making the flash-sideways turn out to be the afterlife felt like a bit of a cheat. It's obvious it was an intentional psych-out. I was somewhat disappointed that nothing in it really turned out to be relevant to the main plot and amounted to fanfic to give characters happy endings. It was basically the writers trying to have their cake and eat it too.

The finale itself was fine. It did some things right, and was a valiant wrap up considering all the loose ends and half assed explanations they gave under the excuse of "well, that wasn't important to the story", despite stringing audiences along for multiple seasons with promises otherwise.

Considering the limitations of television, I think they did about as good as they could. They only have so much control over actors that suddenly want to leave or the network's whims on how many season they get. If they didn't get that definitive episode count partway through season three, Lost would have meandered much much worse.

Once of the tightest plotted shows I can think of is B5, and that mostly works because all of the episodes covering the main arc were written by a single person.

With respect, I completely disagree. As much as Lindleof and Cuse crowed about how happy they were with setting the date like that, they had already concocted sooo many crazy plot threads, there was no WAY they were going to resolve everything by the final season. And say what you want about "enjoying the ride" or "it's about the characters," but right from the pilot, they created a plot. Driven. Show. They drove blind with it for years and then realized they had to find the actual road sooner or later.

Lost became that rare example of a show that actually needed to meander a little longer. They were trying to cram a ten-pound bag of mystery into a one pound bag of final season.

I'm not claiming it was perfect, but I think it would have been much worse had they not had an end date. The random creating of new mysteries that happened through the first few seasons would have gotten worse. There would have been many more loose ends, and they probably would have ended up with half a season to wrap things up on short notice if the network allowed them to.

The lost finale was terrible. I'll paraphrase what a fellow farker said about the ending sequence of the finale:

"It was a masturbatory in-show cast reunion."

I was also disappointed with the way the rivalry between Ben and Widmore played out. Ben seemed like a such a mastermind throughout most of the seasons and by the end of the show he was pretty much a pawn.

/Still like the show overall

He was always a pawn, just a very smart sociopathic pawn. His issues with Jacob and Richard and other characters always showed him to have inferiority issues, which were explained by the father backstory.
