Somewhere in there is a joke about knitting Afghans, but I'm too tired to think of it. Anyone?

ArkAngel affirms what I love about Fark: any cultural reference that can be made about an article, will be made.

Miss Stein: Somewhere in there is a joke about knitting Afghans, but I'm too tired to think of it. Anyone?

You crochet an afghan, you knit a throw. There's a difference.

/now, if you don't mind, I have several lace commissions to work on

So when did prison officials start giving weapons to inmates?

long ago National Lampoon magazine's True Crime section had a story about a little old lady sitting at her kitchen table knitting when a fist plunged through one of her locked door glass panes. the would-be robber's hand flailed about to identify where the dead bolt throw was.

old lady reached over and plunged a knitting needle right through the guys hand. he howled in pain repeatedly, blood dripping as he forced his hand back out to make his escape.

old lady said to the local paper reporter when asked how she thought to defend herself: "knit one, purl one, stab one"

I suspect they use plastic needles.

Why don't prison industries make very, high-end goods like: hand loomed cloth; carved scroll work; beaded cloth?

You don't want prison labor, which is little better than slave labor, competing with real manufacturing jobs. However, prison industries always end up making crap that can be mass-produced like government desks and chairs or the more recent trend of answering phone calls?
