SHUT UP HITLER.

2011-08-27 09:20:10 PM
I just finished watching it. Rory is really starting to overshadow Amy. They gave us a ton of story in this episode though. I'm guessing the next couple of episodes will be monster of the week stuff. But this episode was great.

Next week's episode looks good and creepy.

Just finished it, holy crap. That threw back to Silence in the Library. The Doctor told River his name. I'm just wondering when or if the red sonic is gonna come into play.

Okay, so did Melody/River using up all her regenerations on the Doctor cause him to have extra ones?

He has at least 19 more according to the Tardis in the Doctors Wife.

/Rory, put Hitler in the cupboard.

What part of the episode did she say that? I must have missed it.

I liked the scene where Amy asks Rory 'Can you drive a motorcycle?' and he says 'Probably, it's been that kind of day'.

Considering he got to punch Hitler he must have been feeling like he could do anything haha

When they are flying the junk tardis into the old tardis after she tells rory how to get to the old bridge. She said she's changed the rooms 30 times already.

Yeah, called it in the other thread:

ghost_who_walks: /Which I'm pretty sure is going to show up everywhere in about, oh, a day

Not that I mind, it is a GREAT line :) I'll certainly be using it a lot.

texdent: Okay, so did Melody/River using up all her regenerations on the Doctor cause him to have extra ones?

We haven't had clarification about the 12 regen (13 bodies) limit, though clearly from a real-world perspective they're not going to let a little narrative hump like that stand in the way of what has to be one of the Beeb's most profitable titles these days. This could the the trigger, or maybe they'll just say it was an artificial limit imposed by the Time Lords - after all, in the old series it had already been shown that they could take and give regens at will.

Oh ok, gotcha. I remember that just didn't think about it.

& I'll just add I'm VERY glad that Mels was not being hinted as a new companion, she was very annoying.

Yeah, the TARDIS says something like she's archived them, and the Doctor says "You can't archive something that hasn't happened yet!", to which she replies "YOU can't!"

/I kinda wish Idris had mad a reappearance as the voice interface, but then she's definitely someone the Doctor has screwed up.
//And nice to know he still feels guilty about his recent companions.
///Martha plays second fiddle to Rose again, poor girl.

Some things:
1. You just know, before this week is out, there will be a whole subsection of the Doctor Who fanfic devoted to the Junior Companions (poor little Rory, getting picked on all the way through life, and Amy being so blind to his affection... awwww, dammit, now I'M starting to write the fanfic! HELP!)
2. The little line Melody/River says about ageing backwards slightly just to screw with everyone... LOL, somewhere, a Whovian nerd had that idea just seconds before it was said on screen and he thought he was so clever and then, dammit, Moffat got there first!
3. How can it be this hot already? This has nothing to do with the show, it's just that two nights ago I had to have blankets on my bed and today I'm considering turning on the air-con. It's like someone threw a switch around here. I guess our tropical winter is over then.
4. Alex Kingston just has had so much fun with this role, and who doesn't love the post-regen how-sexy-is-my-new-body bit. People without a soul is who!
5. Why was the Doctor's regen sequence "cancelled" or whatever it was..? That's some good poison...
6. Still no explanation for how River kills the Doctor (or how that works...)
7. At least now we have an explanation for why River says the older-looking-to-us Number 10 is so "young" compared to her Doctor. All the Time Lords seem to recognise each other and see something other than the physical about each other. Most of the time anyway.
8. I'm really glad Moffat didn't drag this out (I guess I'm projecting my Torchwood complaints onto Doctor Who here) - I had "Mels" pegged almost immediately, but I don't think he was trying that hard to hide it. I get the feeling, if this had been a RTD story this would have been a two parter. Thank Moffat it wasn't.

Enough for now!

/If it had been an RTD story, it wouldn't have been a production still of Billie Piper, it'd have been a full show about Rose and how guilty the Doctor feels about her and how wonderful she is and WHY WON'T EVERYONE LOVE HER AS MUCH AS THEY SHOULD!
//*breath* *breath* RTD is gone, we don't have to have Poochie Rose stories anymore.
/// :-)

2011-08-27 11:14:18 PM
Oh, and FTFA:
The episode did allow Rory (played by Arthur Darville) finally to find his niche. Rory's been a dopey gooseberry around the Tardis, always in peril and being not-quite-killed-off. The character's been defined only by what he's not - charismatically alien like the Doctor or fearlessly feisty like Amy - rather than anything much he does. Now, though, he got to punch a few Nazis, utter the enviable line "Shut up, Hitler" and become an accidental action hero. About time.

While I agree with the over all sentiment, I'd argue that this process had already begun through this whole season. I'd forgive the writer though, even as the TV writer for a newspaper, I doubt he follows the show as avidly as we do. It's nice to see the rest of the world getting on board Team Rory.

The instant she showed up I winced and reminded myself that Moffat wants nothing to do with her. I did like the idea of Amelia playing the interface though.

Apparently they cannot spot TimeLordy humans, however, as the Doctor had no idea until A Good Man Goes to War that River was anything but human, and he did not recognise Mels as being River's earlier incarnation (or baby Melody's later incarnation). Assuming she is also the Little Girl, the Doctor failed to make that connection too.

They also can't spot each other if their entities are hidden in pocket watches, as demonstrated in "Utopia"

Hell, Five didn't even know that Ten was a Time Lord, much less his own elder self, in "Time Crash". Ten similarly fails to recognise that Jackson Lake isn't a Time Lord in "The Next Doctor" and takes him at face value as being a future Doctor regeneration.

What happened in those thirty minutes between the digital Amelia telling him to believe in fish fingers and custard and the Doctor showing up in that sexy suit of his? Because there's no way it took the Doctor thirty minutes to find his clothes and dress.

Those thirty minutes are going to be very, very important. I just wish I knew how important.

He had to invent a sonic cane too. So that's at least 15 minutes right there.

I was waiting for a quick shot showing some henchman letting Adolf out of the closet and him saying, "Well, I was going to be happy with just the Sudetenland, but now I'm MAD!"

And I know it wouldn't be as dramatic, but if I had a time machine and wanted to kill Hitler, I wouldn't head for 1938 when he's got a lot of guys with guns around. I'd head back decades earlier and hunt Mrs. Schickelgruber like Sarah Connor.

Technically, he has 19 more Tardis control room designs according to that episode, which doesn't say anything about how many more regenerations he has. After all, Ten didn't get a new control room.

I got the feeling that the Doctor may have inadvertently triggered Hitler's paranoia... would he have been that worried about invading the UK until the Doctor told him that the Brits were coming?

So when are they going to rename the show "The River Song Hour?"

Moffat seems to have as much a hard on for River Song as RTD did for Rose.

Yeah, she was great as an intellectual match/balance against the Doctor, but some of the recent stuff is just too much IMO.

At least next week seems to be back to Moffat's excellent "let's make something creepy that the Doctor helps the characters overcome."

I didn't think he was really hiding it, was he? She said her name was Mels, it's not a huge leap. It's not like she called herself Ydolem or anything.

/"Oh no?" said Vimes happily. "This quite cheers me up. It"s one of the lesser-known failings of the vampire. No one knows why. It goes with having big windows and easily torn curtains. A sort of undeath-wish, you might say. However clever they are, they can"t resist thinking that no one will recognize their name if they spell it backwards^. Let"s go."

SHUT UP, HITLER!

/OK, you may be right, but at least she's not in every episode, there's still the monster of the week eps
//One, Poochie needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Poochie's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Poochie"? Three...
///Well, she got the time machine...

My only real dissapointment was their wrapping up the whole 'River Song, assassin' plotline. I was really hoping we'd have a few episodes of her playing the Doctors arch enemy. She'd have made a brilliant villain.

I'm honstly starting to think that Rory could kick Chuck Norris's ass in a stand up fight.

And yes, I admit they fooled me with the 'Mel turns into River' thing. Maybe because I was too busy thinking "Holy crap this better not be a new companion. Cuz I want to smack her already."

2011-08-28 08:55:27 AM
So glad that I apparently wasn't the only one who shouted at my screen when Rose made her cameo. There's a large fanboy part of me that wishes it had shown some older companions (Sarah Jane, Leela, Jaime or Susan) during that sequence, but I realize that it would've been cheesy or confused people who aren't continuity whores. Though with Sladen's death, Sarah Jane would've been a little touching.

/Companions chosen because SJ and Leela already had shoutouts in the new series and the last two are just personal favorites.
//Though Carole Ann Ford gets mad in interviews when people refer to Susan as a companion. Isn't that adorable?

Quite a few funny bits in there. I liked the parts where the voice interface is switching between representations of Rose, Martha and Donna. "Oh..thanks! Give me guilt!" and how the representation of Amelia is SO scottish. And of course all the parts with Hitler were great.

Masochist?

King Wicker:

Thats true, and I'm still hoping for a reference this season. Don't think it would have worked in this scene though. They were going for semi-comic and having Sarah turn up would have brought it to a screeching halt.

2011-08-28 09:07:15 AM
Now that Moffat has given the Doctor a defined date of death AND in this incarnation, I wonder how much of a corner he's backed himself in to once Matt Smith moves on.

Having a temporal punishment team is way too PC, and they seemed poorly trained if they were willing to change the timeline by going after River before she had committed her crime of killing the Doctor. Also, who in their right mind puts hunter/killers inside their own vessel? Stupid, if you ask me.
