That picture is a perfect illustration of why I gave up trying to learn-to-love Linux back in the day (1996?). I am sure it has improved a lot since then, but after spending an hour trying to figure out how to get my mouse to work with it, another couple of hours trying to adjust the monitor's resolution, and two or three hours to get it to recognize my modem... I was ready to choke the next geek that espoused its beauty and elegance!

It has come lightyears. Most of the biggest distros only have issues with some wifi
cards, if at all. It has gotten to the point where I would be comfortable installing it for
a non-computer expert user.

I recommend Linux Mint to dip your toe back in.

It is, alas, too late for me. Save yourself! I sold my soul to Microsoft (SQL Server and .Net) many, many years ago...

I think that Linux makes a lot of sense if you're into computers. If you understand how elegant/useful it is to be able to simply redirect an output stream from program A into program B then Linux is your best friend. If that doesn't tickle your whistle then it's probably not. If you're interested in getting serious work done with a computer, then Linux is for you.

Its good to have options for when people are too poor to buy quality like Apple.

PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

That's only if you count MacOS 10 as BSD. Most of the underlying parts (Mach, NeXTSTEP) forked from BSD long ago. And the FreeBSD derived parts are far from the majority of the code.

OS X is to BSD as BSD is to UNIX.

Since I installed SuSE on the very first computer I myself owned in '98 / '99, every single of my computers had at least a Linux partition.

With my last computer it took two hours to find out that Win7 wouldn't even let me change the desktop background, and two delicious days of testdriving different distros. Now it runs under Ubuntu. No Windows in sight.

And I am a woman.

So there.

That still doesn't mean you've been *touched by* a woman.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. All of my Mac hardware works just fine under Ubuntu. There's an Ubuntu package specifically for Macs that includes the software for all the little bells and whistles.

I did have one strange problem where the wifi radio would slow to 56K transfer speed if it was running on battery, but I was able to clear that up with a google search pretty quickly.

Now that I think about it, there's one other strange thing that I've noticed. When I adjust the keyboard backlight brightness past the brightest it can go it drops back to zero rather than capping out at the brightest it should go. I suppose you can call that a bug if you want, but it doesn't effect the fitness of the computer.

That picture is probably from the latest Slackware release and you don't have to do any of that. Just because it uses a curses interface doesn't mean it hasn't advanced. It does mean that it doesn't need a video card to install however.

Honestly, what does Ubuntu do that OS X doesn't, unless you are running Linux only software.

I never did get my wifi card to work on ubuntu. I guess thats what I get for having a motorola wifi card...

Eff all that noise. My first baptism by fire was a console based Debian install THEN trying to get Enlightenment to load. I was in therapy for years because of that weekend.

It was some castrated version of Win7, Windows 7 Starter or some such.

And a few minutes of googling showed that it was not possible at that time (last summer) to change the background.

Never too late. Programmed in MS technologies for more than 10th years and switched to Linux about a year ago. Never been happier.

I'm a Windows on the desktop, Linux on the server type guy. No hate for OSX, just no love for it.

I would still be a Linux on the desktop type guy if ATI hadn't dropped support for my graphics card. OSS drivers were not usable. Got a Vista driver working fine in Win7 on my old Dell lappy. It still runs faster than most people newer crappimafied machines.

SMB2811: Honestly, what does Ubuntu do that OS X doesn't, unless you are running Linux only software.

Mainly that, actually. There are too many programs that just aren't available for OSX and usually the source isn't available to recompile from. Aside from the software base, OSX is technically Unix but it doesn't really act like it. Even though the terminal is there and works just fine you always feel like OSX would rather you not do it that way.

The only thing Ubuntu doesn't do that OSX does do is Netflix and some Steam games. Otherwise I wouldn't have OSX at all.

So, basically, you didn't pay attention to what you were buying and that's Microsoft's fault.

You're kind of backpedaling now that you've been caught, but what irritates me about comments like that is you tried to frame your pro-Linux position by blaming your own screw-up on Windows. It's not that you can't change the background in Windows 7, it's that you didn't pay any attention to what you were doing when you bought a cheap-o computer and you wound up with the gimped version of Windows and didn't realize your goof until it was too late.

Fine, you like Linux, yippee, so do I. Try commenting on what you like about it instead of whining about things you farked up yourself as if those things are some sort of proof of the inferiority of the competition.

I dunno -- both my mother in law and my parents use Ubuntu on their desktop machines, and they, despite being not technologically inclined, are perfectly happy with their setups.

CSB time: I spent hours trying to get the driver installation program for an HP photosmart printer to run on a Win7Pro x64 laptop. It would consistently crash with unhandled DIV0 exceptions. I plugged the printer into the Ubuntu machine, and it *just worked*.

The final solution for me ended up being to serve the printer to the Win7 machine via Ubuntu/CUPS. Something is wrong (or is it right?) when the Linux machine is *easier* than the windows machine.

I spent the time fighting with Slackware to get it to work. Took a long time, many, many floppies, and lots of frustration.

But that persistence paid off. I've spent my entire career utilizing Linux at some level. When I got a sixty day notice two years ago I had an offer for my current job on the table the last week before I was laid off. What was the job market like two years ago?

Linus is a quirky guy, but obviously brilliant and a good steward of his kernel. Rare to find a good coder who can also be an excellent project manager.

My interests tend toward controls and real-time systems, things that Linus has expressed a profound disinterest in. In spite (or perhaps because) of that, some very cool changes have happened in the kernel from about 2.6.32 that make it work for just about any RT project. He has forced the RT kernel hackers to present their changes in terms of overall benefit, just just for their "crazy" purposes.

In fact, since the first of the 2.6.x line, so much has changed for the better that Linus recently announced 3.0. It's been a long time coming.
