Just say Na to low-sodium diets.

Yeah, leave off telling my cardiologist how much sodium I consume

/dont even ask me about the alkyhol

"A high level was defined as more than 3,090mg of pure sodium a day - or just over a teaspoon of salt a day at 7.7g."

So much for Asian cuisine, American fast food, and most other fun things. On the plus side, I'm likely to forget this news article in about 3 minutes because of all the salt I eat.

Na, I don't think so.

Can you flush it out if you increase your water intake?

Deborah Barnes, a dementia expert at the University of California in San Francisco, said: 'This is one of the first studies that looks at sodium. It's another important point about diet. You need to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and stay away from processed foods.'

It must be so frustrating for these doctors when studies repeatedly fail to back up these old homilies.

With a dulled mind you may drown instead.

The make a point of repeating things like "low exercise" and "sedentary" in the article. I'm thinking even unicorn meat and squeezed pixie juice would be unhealthy if you weren't active and exercising.
Basically the message of the article to me was "If you aren't going to work it off- don't eat it."

/sodium is both my crutch and that which kicks the crutch out.

Sodium may give me Alzheimers but at least it won't give me Alzheimers.

Except that a lot of 'low-sodium' food tastes like ass.

Look, I make the effort to use as little as possible, and stay away from canned or processed food that has shiatloads of salt. But sorry, thats the best I can manage.

Old enough to know better: Except that a lot of 'low-sodium' food tastes like ass.

Food that brags 'low sodium' can sometimes have the same or even more than the normal version. You need to read the fine print where the low sodium is compared against and it's usually not their own brand.

It's just good sense to ease up on sodium. You can't remove it from a diet but keeping it withing 2000-2500mg for a adult male should be fine (US FDA levels). The problem is people eat so much fast food and junk that they are closer to 3500-4000mg or more.

For example: Quizno's Turkey Bacon Guacamole Sub with reduced fat Buttermilk Ranch dressing has a whopping 4530 mg of sodium! That shiat ain't healthy just because it came with 'low fat' dressing.

It's been about a month since doctors said "Oops. Everything we've been saying for decades about how bad salt is for you was just speculation and no science really backs that up. Our bad, sorry."

So of course, now it's time for the next wave of non-scientific "Salt is bad for you" press releases.

Remember to eat your fruits and veggies, people. If you don't you could spontaneously disintegrate. It's science.

yea fark that, I sweat 5000mg of sodium per day at least. and since when does the daily mail have reliable health reports?

This. I just read last month that report about how high-sodium diets being bad for you had no actual science backing it up.
And now this?
Come on now.

First it was bad for you then it wasn't now it is again. Damn docs need to make up their mind. I don't overload my food with it, but I eat more than a tsp. a day. Of course, my work is very strenuous and I am constantly drinking gatorade and water so the exercise thing might be keeping those forget me nots at bay for awhile.

Nearly owed me a keyboard. I can't remember crap unless I write it down.

I just got diagnosed with high bloodpressure and told to go on low sodium diet so getting a kick etc... I've started looking at salt content, then saw that EVERYTHING with sodium counts, MSG, baking soda.

So Fat Free, Sodium Free leaves me with pure sugar snaks like smarties/spree/Nerds. I guess I'll be crossing the boarder of my borderline diabetes. Turning 40 sucks, maybe I'll set on that swivel chair at the top of the stairs at work and either kill myself or get workers comp.

I was at the doctor's office the other day and I noticed the body mass index chart on the wall. It says for my height (5'9'') I should weigh about 165 pounds at the most. Hahahahah!! I think those charts are made for everyone being built like a Kenyan runner. If by chance I may have possibly done a bench press or two in my life and built some muscle which will add to your weight. I think the FDA needs to take people with more muscular builds into account when pushing out what an acceptable weight should be for people.

When they start reporting Alzheimer's in Southeast Asia, then you can start blaming the salt.

They use fish sauce which is a form of liquid salt, much saltier than soy sauce. If salt was such a big problem, you would think it would show up there first.

2011-08-25 04:11:14 PM
It just makes sense that too much salt would be bad for you. You need the right potassium-sodium ratio for your cells to operate properly. Or something like that, I forget.
