Critics have openly asked why a black, or at least an American, artist was not chosen and even remarked that Dr King appears slightly Asian in Mr Lei's rendering.

Meet Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Back in the 80's when her design was selected, Ross Perot referred to her as an "eggroll."

If an Asian is involved in any art project, expect a lot of racist outrage, amplified by the media to make a non-story a news story.

However, Ed Dwight, a sculptor in Denver, said Dr King would be "turning over in his grave" if he knew his likeness had been conceived by someone living under a Communist regime.

Quit your whining. The Communists underbid you.

Maybe you weren't alive then. But having a Vietnamese refugee design the memorial would be like having the heirs of Osama Bin Laden design the flight 93 or 9/11 memorial.

The one thing she did was to keep it simple and thereby making it elegant.

well no. It would be more like having a refugee from Afghanistan design the flight 93 or 9/11 memorial.

I think it was even more appropriate for a Vietnam refugee to create it, after all it was their freedom we were trying to defend. We were trying to stop the spread of communism from N. Vietnam to S. Vietnam. Now, if this were a Chinese person that designed the Vietnam War Memorial, then there would be a huge controversy.

A person who was personally affected by a war designing a memorial to that war? Now that's just silly.

Maya Lin is an American, and the Vietnam Memorial was designed by an American and built in America. This has nothing to do with racism. Don't you get it? The MLK memorial was designed and built by foreigners. This story deserves the stupid tag, as did your stupid comment.

Oh, that's right, can't use quotes from a speach that espouses equality if you want to continually claim victim status.

They had to go with China, The MLK jr family used up most of the budget by making the monument builders pay $800k for the words and likeness of the man. I'm sure that would have made MLK jr happy.

Why isn't it? Didn't he influence the people to make change in this country? I think the artist did a good job but disappointed it was outsourced to China or anywhere else. This is a representation of a great American man who fought for American people. It should have been built here by Americans.

Sadly, my first reaction when seeing a picture of the memorial was that it looked the like they got about 3/5 of the way through carving a statue of Dr. King and then stopped.

I totally can see having an "AMERICAN" Asian design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

But to "outsource" this very important piece of history to China!!!
This says alot of how farked up we have become.

That the people who are building the memorial went and found the best sculptor for the job? It isn't like they went searching for the lowest bidder.

2011-08-24 08:42:12 AM
Yeah, while I just find it amusing to have american flags say "Made in China" on them, this is a bit disturbing. I would say the same if it was made in Canada or Mexico. I am sure there were more than a few sculptors here in the US that would have done the job for as much and forever be proud of the project. To have a statue of any country's leaders & great men out sourced to another country to save a little $ while the economy is in the tank is wrong.

Maya Lin was born in America. Her parents are from China. They were already living in Ohio when the Chinese decided to back the Vietminh, a full 15 years before U.S. ground troops entered Vietnam. She studied at Yale, just like five U.S. presidents did. All of her major work was constructed in, and is currently located across the U.S.

I don't like the statue, regardless of its artist's origin. The demeanor on his face and his crossed arms don't portray what I'd like to see in a King statue, not to mention it looks completely half-assed like Crazy Horse Memorial

It then became the symbol for that as new immigrants came to America to become legal citizens.
