Isn't this list rather incomplete if it doesn't have Muhammad "The Greatest/The Champ" Ali?

2011-08-23 10:56:17 PM
"Mean" Joe Green

Willie "Pops" Stargell

Jerome "The Bus" Bettis

Bill "The Spaceman" Lee

List is useless.

"Joltin' Joe" is a much better nickname for Joe DiMaggio than "The Yankee Clipper."

Also, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd.

Agreed. List sucks without these entries. Warning: Some of these might be Berman-isms...

I think this one might be a Berman-ism too:

Vlad "The Impaler" Guerrero

Dale "The Divided Hemispheres" Earnhardt.

/no one beats the mad hungarian
//WORST. OMISSION. EVAR.

NDP2: Bob "Death to Flying Things" Ferguson.

Nice one, NDP2. Reminded me of Dick Stuart, "Dr. Strangeglove" (and no, it's not a Berman-ism). There was also the top line of the Hartford Whalers -- Sylvain Turgeon, Ron Francis, and Ray Neufeld -- known collectively as "Sly and The Family Stone Hands."

whoops , when i copy and pasted, i accidentally deleted the rest of my post.
i dont think a nickname can be that great, when it is anointed to another player and universally accepted (ivan rodriguez). thats my thinking about Pudge.

Hey Big Baby? You can't give yourself a nickname. That's not how it works...

Hi.

I'm with the Fark Police.

I'm going to have to see pictorial proof of this statement.

Or else I'm hauling you off to Fark Jail.

Seems like a lot of baseball players in the 60's and 70's had some good ones:

Sudden Sam McDowell
John "Boog" Powell
Willie "Stretch" McCovey
Orlando "Baby Bull" Cepeda
Dagaberto "Campy" Campaneris
Walt "No Neck" Williams
John "Blue Moon" Odom
Juan "The Dominican Dandy" Marichal

Michael 'Whispering Death' Holding
Wendell 'Hello' Sailor
Brian 'The Chiropractor' Lima (He will rearrange your bones)
John 'Nobody' Eales (Nobody is perfect)
Mark 'Afghan' Waugh (The forgotten Waugh)

2011-08-24 05:08:22 AM
You know it seems to me they give these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names. Strange names, pet names...like Dizzy Dean...

2011-08-24 05:22:17 AM
My list fail entry is Durantula.

"El Constusione" Manu Ginobili is a personal favorite.

And, maybe the best active nickname in the NBA, Corey "Bad Porn" Maggette (he penetrates and scores, but it's just no good to watch).

2011-08-24 05:35:57 AM
Is 'The King' really a great nickname if two people have it?

Also, as has been pointed out...no nicknames from anyone on a team that played in Pittsburgh? Really?

I mean with the Steelers alone you could come up with at least a handful of good solid nicknames, and leagues of ridiculous nicknames (I'm looking at you Dump Truck)

2011-08-24 05:47:07 AM
Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige
Mark "The Bird" Fidrych
Tony "The Genius" LaRussa*

*vomiting as I type this

You said "beat off" twice.

2011-08-24 07:05:36 AM
The really great nicknames are the one where you do not even need the athlete's full names:

The Mad Stork

'Scooter'

Pee Wee

The Wizard of Oz

Mr October

Louisiana Lightning

Godzilla

Casey

You could make a nice list of just all the great Babe Ruth nicks - and somebody did

"The Huntington Beach Badboy"
"The Iceman"

"The Mexicutioner"

I admit I still laugh at "J-Lau" Joe Lauzon.

The thing that bugs me about MMA nicknames is that it's standard to have one. Nicknames don't mean anything if every fighter has one.

2011-08-24 08:38:16 AM

RedRedRobin: Michael 'Whispering Death' Holding
Wendell 'Hello' Sailor
Brian 'The Chiropractor' Lima (He will rearrange your bones)
John 'Nobody' Eales (Nobody is perfect)
Mark 'Afghan' Waugh (The forgotten Waugh)

"Waltzing" Matt Hilda deserves a mention also

2011-08-24 08:49:28 AM

uofacats2004: Dr. Farkenstein: Carlton "Pudge" Fisk

uh, what?

Fisk was referred to as "Pudge" long before Iván Rodríguez showed up.

2011-08-24 08:52:40 AM
Did the Pillsbury Throwboy, aka The Hefty Lefty, aka Quarter-Got-Back, aka QBese, aka J. Load, aka The Battleship Lorenzen, aka The Lord of the Ring Dings, aka Tubby Gunslinger, aka The Big Beautiful Quarterback (BBQ), aka The Round Mound of Touchdown make the list?

2011-08-24 09:03:37 AM
Jim Bulldog Bouton. Also known as Cancer Bat.
Nolan The Express Ryan
Bob Mr. Cowboy Lilly
Roger Captain America Staubach
John The Diesel Riggins
Billy White Shoes Johnson
Frank Hondo Howard

just to add a few

2011-08-24 09:09:08 AM
Re Will "The Thrill" Clark, he loved that nickname, but when he got excited his voice would get really high pitched, and his teammates tagged him with Will "The Shrill" which he didn't like so much.

2011-08-24 09:15:29 AM
The Battleship Lorenzen

Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon

2011-08-24 09:17:27 AM
I always thought Dale Earnhardt's nickname was "Pink Floyd" on account of his greatest hit being the wall. Guess I was mistaken.

2011-08-24 09:25:03 AM
I think the greatest sports nickname is Bucky "The Catawba Claw" Pope.
/it just has a nice ring

2011-08-24 09:26:13 AM
Adding a few to the mix:

Mickey "Gozzlehead" Rivers

Shane "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Victorino

Dominick "The Dominator" Hacek

Samuel "The Haitian Dalmatian" Dalembert

2011-08-24 09:28:03 AM
What about Manny Ramirez - "ManRam" ?
