North Dakota is number 2? Those twelve people must be nuts.

followed by Alaska. Really? I wouldn't live in ANY of those three states. Hawaii would be a nice place to visit, but what do you do when you live there? Where do you take a weekend road trip to? Nuts to that, I likes me some mainland.

Oklahoma: 64.8
Tennessee: 64.7

Never been to North Dakota, but I always wanted to visit. More so than Hawaii, anyway. I don't like warm temperatures and I'm not a big fan of sunny weather.

Interesting correlation. Perhaps having a black president is making some of these people there unhappy?

Happy, even in this economy? It looks as if if you were born there, people would think you were from another country, imagine that!

I'm more willing to assume the underlying variable is education. Poorly educated individuals are going to get poorer jobs, make worse choices, and be more angry about life than an educated person. As a result, the fear mongers get better responses catering to the uneducated by assuring them that it's not their fault. Once the populace is good and tranquil, start making enemies and vague accusations. This leads to derp and unhappiness.

I notice that hyper-evangelical religious devotion correlates with the chart as well.

Naw, me neither. As I said earlier, I'd rather visit North Dakota. I've spent most of my life living in essentially on the beach, and I think I've only been on the sand less than 5 times in my life (the 4th time being the last time I got a sunburn, about 20 years ago).

The only Hawaiians who attack white people are the stupid ones.

As anywhere else on Earth, it doesn't take much imagination to find ways to avoid the stupid people. Stay out of the poor neighborhoods and you'll be fine.

/95% of Hawaiians are mixed blood anyway.

The first sentence has the phrase "reputedly known as". That doesn't exactly scream widespread cultural phenomenon to me.

I'm not a big fan of being in nature. I'm usually quite happy being in a windowless room so long as I have a computer, the temperature is around 55F and relatively low humidity.

You're probably right, if I were flipping burgers or living in a trailer park I'd be pretty bitter about things too. Well, at least bitter about different kinds of things than I'm currently bitter about anyway. Still though, I'll bet that set has a pretty large intersection with racists as well. Especially given that `It's not your fault' means `It's somebody else's fault!' to them, and that somebody else is the blacks, Mexicans, whatever scary minority they perceive as having taken their jeorb.

yeah i have friends that moved out to honolulu and the people they work with are generally reasonable to them but overtly distrustful and what we would almost certainly consider racist. they are generally miserable there, but i think that's more to do with the high cost of living and massive distance from their families.

I'm not denying racial/cultural tensions exist, but it doesn't sound like there are white people being lynched or being haloe hauled for looking at native girls. The way the "tradition" is described makes it sound like a vast majority of the community is on board with it and that there are overwhelming numbers of documented incidents.

I'm inherently skeptical of any "Beat up a (race) kid" days that crop up, mostly because I remember hearing about one of these nearly every month I was in high school.

Yes because it certainly can't be a double dip recession, 19+% unemployment, continued weakening of the dollar, loss of national vision (all but closing NASA), ballooning federal government an intrusion on individual rights.

Yeah, it has to be rayyyyysism..

Sybarite: North Dakota is number 2? Those twelve people must be nuts.

I lived there for 5 years, split between Grand Forks (small town), Stanley (really small town), and Palermo (microscopic town). It's hell on earth. The state spends eight months of the year frozen solid, two months battling floods along the Red River, and two months fleeing man-eating mosquitos in sweltering heat and near 100% humidity. The primary (and often only) source of entertainment is getting raging drunk. Lutefisk (tasteless white fish boiled in lye) is the main local delicacy, courtesy of the hordes of Norsemen who live there.

RexTalionis: Naw, me neither. As I said earlier, I'd rather visit North Dakota. I've spent most of my life living in essentially on the beach, and I think I've only been on the sand less than 5 times in my life (the 4th time being the last time I got a sunburn, about 20 years ago).

The cold in ND isn't exactly pleasant - it's definitely not snowball fight and skiing type weather. It's basically the North American equivalent of an empty Siberian wasteland, only completely lacking in trees and hills (which means you get to deal with incessant 20-30 mph winds, coming directly to you from the North Pole). I am very used to the cold (I'm from relatively northern Canada), and I couldn't farking stand it, mostly because of those never-ending, godforsaken freezing winds.

So no, it's not a nice place to visit.

Well, maybe it's not pleasant, but I'd like to see that cold weather first hand some day (a quick google search says that Bismarck reached -44 degrees in 2009). That's gotta be an interesting experience.

As far as skiing and snowballs goes, I don't really like the snow, so that's fine by me.
