My library has over 2 million volumes.

Pretty quiet around here, though. Students don't return until next weekend.

Then, it will be madness.

Even worse, it's Bob Greene.

2011-08-21 08:51:09 PM
Ah yes, Bob Greene, fired from his columnist job at the Chicago Tribune when they found out that he had slept with a 17 year old he had spoken to as a source for a column. Happy day here in Chicago; he was a schmaltzy writer who wrote as if the pinnacle of American society was Columbus, OH in 1960. He can once again go straight to hell, along with his stupid hairpiece.

They should follow the Williamsburg library's example and require proof of residency and an in-state driver's license to get a library card. To keep the W&M students out.

Cuz it's a noble purpose, keeping people out of public libraries.

One time I was in an old library with my art class, and the foreign kid from Poland pulled out a pair of panties from one of the book shelves. This library is over 100 years old. I have no idea how long they were there.

I ACTUALLY heard this exchange between some white trash neighbors, where I used to live: "Go to the library!! You can rent videos there!!!!" If I went to teabagger rallies, I might actually run into them.

Yup, the UNH library. Makes it hard to keep out the students. Granted, the thought of actually having to read something does occasionally do that for us. for a fee, we also service the public.

Definitely noble, keeping students out. When they announced their new policy I turned in my library card and told them to fark themselves.

For now. The Libraries around here have gone to 4 days a week and reduced hours because of budget cuts. If it keeps up, you won't be doing that soon because they will no longer exist. Course, with many books on the internet and that growing daily, pretty soon they will become obsolete anyway, and it will be a line item they can cut to save a few more cops from being laid off or furloughed.

Or something like that.

/They also cut the number of branches in the county from 7 to 4. If you live in a suburb, you'll have to take your bus not a bike to get to the nearest branch

I feel sort of bad that my library is somewhat within walking distance. I don't think our hours have been scaled back too much. Of course, I live in the People's Republic of Montgomery County, MD, where reading is valued.

Plymouth or Keene are possibilities, too. Dartmouth wouldn't be a bad place to work. I've got some family that lives in the area. Owned the sporting goods store in downtown Hanover.

Some of you know me as a Fark Independent (I don't think I am, but I do lean right). My brother in law thinks libraries are a great socialist evil that should be disbanded.

I think he is what's wrong with the Republican party today. I believe libraries are an important responsibility of our government and an excellent use of tax dollars.

I just got back from our library's annual bag sale. All the books you can fit in a giant bag for a 1 or 2 buck donation. For 100 bucks, I could practically build my own library.

I love libraries. Aside from the obvious, it makes a city feel like a community. I know that right wingers seem to hate this idea, but occasional socialization will not kill you.

Libraries are nice, if you live in a largish city with a good budget.

Our poor little library is so stressed for material and funding. I went in one day to try and find a book on raising chickens. Nada. It's rather sad, especially since I'm in a rural area of TN.

Just what sort of a library are we talking about here?

I thought it would be the opposite. I went to a small town college and a lot of the high school kids came to the University library for research projects because it was so much better than the town's.

Also a victim of the Worker's and Soldier's Literacy Commune of Montgomery County. Sunday hours at the Rockville branch (within walking distance) are 1-5 PM, comrade, which as far as I'm concerned is pretty ridicu- brb, jackbooted thugs wielding novels at the door.

WV libraries are actually doing reasonably well. No major cutbacks and the volunteers have stepped up their game with better library sales and help. Still wish they had more art history books though.
