"Canadian military"?

Didn't even know they had one. Let's just hope they're not worried about snowmobiles showing up on radar.

For all those moments when you want to sneak up on the Abominable Snowman?

Would love an electric or hybrid snowmobile! Silence FTW.

The vehicle would perhaps be the most unconventional tool in the arsenal of a Conservative government promising to beef up Canada's military might in the North.

Why does Canada need to build up its military? What neighbors do they have that might...

Oh my god! MAPLE ALERT! ATTACK! ATTACK! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! OPERATION DEADLY LEAF IS FULL GO! Get the Marines on the planes!

now America will never be able to repel the imminent Canadian invasion from the great frozen north. We must put up barriers with warning in french and english so that they will stay out.

I find it interesting that this construct is still in use in 2011. Does it happen elsewhere too or is it just on Fark?

Did you read about that on alt.conspiracy.black.helicopters?

I was just reading abotu this on MERX, yeah it's not really "stealth" just silent running hybrid engine. Should be interesting what comes out of it, and it carries commercial crossover value too. I can see companies like bombardier (BRP)jumping all over this. I don't think any other companies are based in Canada really, so I'm not sure how aware of this Polaris or Yamaha or others might be.

Pretty sure it would be the Russians. Lots of posturing in recent years over oil and mineral access in the Arctic. The melting of the polar ice cap is opening up massive natural resource potential to exploit and the Russkies have been very aggressive in making claims. Canada probably wants to make a show so they don't look like a pushover.

They are going to try and take over Alaska. I say we let them have it, so long as they promise to keep Palin there.

I had a Stealth Snowmobile in the late 1980's. Cost me $350.00 and never did run just sat, really quietly until it made a huge bang when it was loaded into the recycle bin.

Sat there mocking me for two years . . .until I smartened up and trashed it

There's lots of jokes about Canadian military, like a guy in a canoe with a rifle. Ha-ha.

Actually, Canada has a very good reason to be interested in defense. Canada is one of the few countries in the world with the privilege of poking into the Arctic Circle, and she does so in a very big way. Huge swaths of land and any amount of territorial ocean in the Arctic Circle for her. No big deal, right? It is a big deal, though, because the Arctic Circle is awash in natural resources, and that's just the stuff we know is there. It's one of Earth's last great treasure troves.

I'll just copy this post from R3DMenace on Reddit who explains it far better than I...

I'll try to explain this very complicated issue of Arctic sovereignty in a few short words. The Arctic is home to the largest deposit of fossil fuels in our country. Protecting these resources should be high on the list of priorities for our political leadership since the bulk of our economy involves cultivating and selling our various resources.

Much of these oil and natural gas deposits are currently inaccessible, but that wont stay the case for long as new technologies emerge in conjunction with the melting of the ice cap.

The Arctic is a frontier land, subject to annexation if not properly patrolled by a country's military. IF you think I'm crazy and that other countries will respect an imaginary line on a map when valuable resources are at stake, take a look at Russia's recent activities in the Arctic. These threats are very real, and can impact our economy and security great going forward.

And its not just natural resources either, the Northwest passage has the potential to be the most lucrative shipping lane in the world.

I'm no war mongering Tory, but I do understand the role hard power plays in international relations, especially when it concerns resource rich territory currently claimed by Canada. I'm not saying these snowmobiles are the answer to our problem, but to write off protecting the Arctic as "boneheaded" is just silly and shows a lack of understanding that, not just you, but a lot of people have about this issue.

2011-08-21 04:44:15 PM
...and when they get stuck in an avalanche nobody will be able to locate them.

2011-08-21 04:45:05 PM
Well, a silent snowmobile has the possibility of making the harp seal hunt more productive, so there's that.

beetcha2it :)

And I strongly agree. The strategic importance of Canada cannot be overstated. In the next hundred years, and probably sooner, it will become one of the most important nations on the planet.

Americans, and I speak as one, need to stop denigrating our northern neighbor. There are wonderful people there capable of wonderful things and they are sitting on one of the richest stores of natural resources imaginable.

$550,000 for a built prototype probably won't get them very far with a company like bombardier.

Unlike road vehicles, weight has a significant penalty on snow, and even the best current batteries are heavy compared to liquid fuel when it comes to energy conversion. This is also why you don't see too many large electric planes on the drawing board yet...

Take THIS hybrid motorcycle setup, with rotary engine and battery pack, and you should be able to create said snowmobile.

So, I'm pretty sure having the stealth snowmobile be the "new hotness" is a pretty bad idea. Like, wouldn't it melt the ice?

Our military has plenty of experience in ending and preventing wars.
We don't have a lot of experience starting them, though.

If there were nobody to oppose them, the Russians would have more than one fleet controlling the entire Arctic.
