Gyrony: I shudder to think what Michele Bachmann's internal conversation is like.

"Let me be your servant, oh Lord, and together we will bring death to the infidels... Let me be your servant, oh Lord, and together we will bring death to the infidels... Let me be your servant, oh Lord..."

"They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward ... when we're fighting three wars."

Darn. I knew we were at war with the Soviet Union. President Reagan said so. But, when did we start the wars against China and India?

impaler: badhatharry: Seriously? Libs really think she doesn't know that the Soviet Union no longer exists. Of course not. She misspoke.

Really?

How about her saying Americans are afraid of India - our ally.

China - our largest trading partner.

If she misspoke, confusing Russia with the Soviet Union, pray tell WTF Russia has done recently that would make us scared of "their rise."

Maybe the concern is "our fall." Americans may envision different scenarios about why we'll stop being the hegemon or what will happen next...

But the idea that US is on the brink of failing, that's a commonly held belief.

Vodka Zombie: She's on the intelligence committee. That right there should tell you all you need to know about the Republican party.

Every time I'm reminded of that, I have to just slowly shake my head and realize that seniority and popularity, not intelligence, scholarship, critical thinking, or even simple truth, put her there.

Do you think they just give her two pencils and some loose change, so she can play desk hockey while the adults review critical, classified intelligence materials?

Important points. I don't care what letter politicians have after their name they still resort to all the old tactics, no surprise since they all seem to hire the same strategists. FEAR FEAR FEAR.

Here we have a presidential candidate trying to scare voters by disparaging three countries who are our trading partners and allies. Politics is a sick business. Make no mistakes, it is a BUSINESS.

Point of order.....

Do people actually say Soviet Union accidentally when they mean Russia if they are under the age of 50? I mean is this really that common of a mistake?

Fahrenheit 450.9: Maybe you can suggest the "perfect" term that means "Russia and and the former-USSR countries that choose to cooperate with modern-day Russia."

How about something along the lines of "Russia and and the former-USSR countries that choose to cooperate with modern-day Russia." It was a radio show, not farking twitter. No reason to abide by the 140 character limit.

If anybody talks enough "on the record," eventually they'll say "Soviet Union" when they should say "Russia" or "Russia and like-minded sovereign countries."

Yes, if you assume 'talks enough' means 'talks for infinity'. Even still, most people would correct themselves, she has shown no evidence that she in fact, realizes that the cold war is over.

That doesn't mean we forgot history,

No, 'we' didn't necessarily forget history, we being me, you, and the vast majority of fark. But there are apparently large parts that 'she' never learned in the first place.

To be fair, if you consider DC and the territories, you do come up with 57 Thingys:

Washington DC
Palmyra Atoll
Puerto Rico
U.S. Virgin Islands
Marianna Islands
Guam
American Samoa

Hold on, how the hell is "she said Soviet Union instead of Russia" the takeaway from that audio clip?

Wouldn't the better headline be about how she thinks there's a realistic chance that we're going to be at war with 40% of the world's population in the near future? Or that she put India on that list?

Fahrenheit 450.9: Dr. Mojo PhD: So what was she trying for? Did she substitute Soviet Union for Russia?

Yes.

How do you do that after twenty years of the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and their puppetmasters? Did she mean a new Soviet Union, euphemistically speaking? Why the fark would you say that when it's blatantly untrue? Were China and India not ooga-booga enough without some mention of OMG COMNISTS? Why? Was she trying to speak in some mangled-ass past tense? Then why China and India? Were they Yankee fear-mongerers in the 50s and 60s? I mean, I know why she'd try to appeal to a base of people born in the 20s and 30s -- senile dementia is a great bloc for Bachmann -- but how the fark? And if that's the case, why the present tense of the statement?

Maybe you can suggest the "perfect" term that means "Russia and and the former-USSR countries that choose to cooperate with modern-day Russia."

Many of us grew up when that region of the globe of was "the Soviet Union."

If anybody talks enough "on the record," eventually they'll say "Soviet Union" when they should say "Russia" or "Russia and like-minded sovereign countries."

That doesn't mean we forgot history, Most often, it means:

a) sometimes people use words from their childhood, even if they aren't technically accurate, and

b) there's always room for editing.

Ignoring the fact that one doesn't even exist anymore and its use would be limited to a historical context, the Soviet Union and Russia have never been one and the same. Saying Russia when it was the USSR would have just referred to one state in that union. So how could someone get them confused? Oh yeah, they're old/dumb/ignorant.

Have you ever done a radio interview? Here's a hint -- immediately afterward you second-guess everything you said.

There isn't shiat you can do to un-do what was broadcast a few minutes ago. When you're live on the air, there's no second take.

I understand that you think she's unaware that the cold war ended. My only point is, citing 20 seconds from a radio interview is a piss-poor warrant for your claim.

20 seconds is a poor reason to believe she doesn't know the soviet union dissolved. But the fact that her campaign hasn't bothered to say "She simply misspoke, could've happened to anyone - remember 57 states and navy coresman?" does adds to my claim.

Sabyen91: threedingers: To be fair, it's a pretty common slip-up for folks to refer to Russia as the Soviet Union. I hear it not infrequently in podcasts and broadcast media. Most people correct themselves immediately, but even so.

Non-story, if you ask me.

No, it really isn't unless those "folks" are mostly retarded.

I think I heard it recently on an episode of The Skeptic's Guide To The Universe, if I'm not mistaken. Those guys (and gal) are definitely not retarded.

I think Bachmann is a total loon but there are plenty of other more substantive things to take her to task on. This one just reeks of nit-picking and only serves to diminish legitimate criticism.

Poison Appleseeds: Overzealous staffer, strong-republican woman. Lamestream media. Blah blah blah

And that's just the response that this will invite from her apologists. "The libs can't come up with any real criticism of Bachmann so they try to make her look stupid by blowing a small misstatement all out of proportion"

rnld: threedingers: Non-story, if you ask me.

I read through the thread and didn't find that anyone asked you.

Hence my use of the conditional conjunction.

Dr. Mojo PhD: No, it's definitely the other way around. People used Russia as short hand for the Soviet Union. Unless you're a perpetual dumbfark with no grasp of history, you don't refer to Russia as the Soviet Union twenty years after the fall of communism unless you're referring to that period in history.

Can you actually picture Kennedy standing in West Berlin and saying "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of the Großdeutsches Reich, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein Nazi!""? Cause that's the same thing there, confusing a twenty-years-gone regime for the current one.

Agree with the bolded bit. Back in the bad old days this used to bug me to no end. However, it's a fact that people still inadvertently refer to Russia as the Soviet Union, and for the same reason it always stands out to me.

That's not to say Bachmann isn't a dumbfark with no grasp of history. I'm just saying that even non-dumbfarks with decent grasps of history can and do make the same gaffe.

Totally irelevant, but I want to find if I still have my old soviet propaganda posters. I bought them at the GUM store by red square in 1985. Some of them were really cool...

I recall one with an eagle representing the United states on the neck of a dove with 'peace' written in a multitude of languages all around it. Kind of odd really.
(actually, that one was 3 posters that made one giant poster)

I sure hope I still have them. (will have to check the parents house this weekend)

I cannot understand her statement, since China and India have been doing pretty well the past twenty years. It isn't some new development. And this whole America=decline is just conservative people freaking out over change and describing change as being a cultural decline.

Perhaps if she was trying to make some clever statement about the government of India and their historical friendliness with the Soviet Union (and their reliance on Soviet weapons factories), and the awkward relations between India, the USSR and China, then perhaps I could try to see what she's talking about. But I don't think she is that smart.

She farks up so bad so often, she uses her superficial fark ups to cover her egregious fuk ups.

When she blamed the Democrats and FDR for the "Hoot Smally" act causing the great depression, she kept focusing on everyone making fun of her calling the "Smote Hawley act" "Hoot Smally," and completely ignored the fact it was the Republican Hoover that did it!

It's all a liberal conspiracy. Damn democraps! First they reactivate the USSR, then they order an illegal hit on a "world leader" and now, just to piss everyone off and throw them for a loop, they infiltrate the teleprompter manufacturer at their Chinese plant, fool around with the microchips in it to make this upstanding real Amurican, corndog swallowing, Elvis living in her heart, scripture quoting, constitution loving, strong conservative woman look bad. Fahrenheit 450.9: Maybe you can suggest the "perfect" term that means "Russia and and the former-USSR countries that choose to cooperate with modern-day Russia."

Happy to oblige, farkface.

Commonwealth of Independent States. That's what they're called and it's exactly what you described and what you and Bachmann are too much of a couple of ignorant motherfarkers to have ever heard of.

And if that's not good enough:
Former Soviet bloc
Former Eastern bloc
Eurasia
Former Soviet Union
Post-Soviet states
Former Soviet republics
Independent States

But you're right. She couldn't have said any of those things. Not only could she not have said any of those things, but in your estimation what she said was the best thing she could have said. After all, I have to come up with the "perfect" word to describe it. Now, as humiliating for you as it must be that there's actually an organization that already encompasses what your stupid ass spastically demanded I proffer the preferred nomenclature for, the fact that you thought "Soviet Union" was the best thing to describe it over all those other terms I listed is just farking sad for you.

Then just to be extra-special stupid -- I'm talking the level of left-field stupid that gets you sent to the principal's office for answering your English five-paragraph essay assignment with math problems -- math problems with the wrong answer -- you throw down with the "maybe YOU can do better before you criticize." Now, I've already proven that I can do better, no doubt about that, but that's some punk-ass biatch bullshiat right there.

You're the kind of whiny little piss-ant fark that would finally score your first job (that didn't involve swallowing your family member's dicks for menthol Kools money) down at a diner as a short order cook. You get an order for a hamburger and take a shiat on a bun; customer complains that you crapped on his bun and you act like the motherfarker has to be Julia farking Childs before he can complain. fark that and fark you, the guy could burn cereal and still know better than to take a log on a kaiser roll and call it a burger, and that's no different than your "maybe YOU can find the perfect term herp derp" farking nonsense. Which, for emphasis, I repeat: I can find the perfect term. Your farking pet politician can't, and neither can you no matter how much you farking tilt at windmills for her.
