Everyone thinks prices will go up then right?

That means they will fall.

2011-08-17 04:19:51 PM
Pfft. This was a Valero refinery. Valero refined gas only goes to Valero stations, like BP refined gas only goes to BP stations and 7-Eleven refined Slurpees only goes to 7-Elevens.

I got my GED concentrated in petroleum distribution. Suck it.

Don't be an idiot. You have to understand how oil works to accurately predict these things.

Here's a short course. I can give you an expanded one later if you need it.
- Refinery explodes = prices go up.
- New refinery comes online = prices go up.
- Democrat is elected = prices go up.
- Tuesday = prices go up.
- Oil spills on a coastline = prices go up.
- John Cleese's wife had kippers on thursday = prices go up.

Since this article is from August 5th, the explosion explains the price hike that has occurred over the past 12 days, right?

Glad I'm on vacation.

The company I work for provides on site fire for Valero, and is first call to back up MEM Fire when they run out of units.

Prices here have hardly budged despite crude dropping almost 20% in the last month or so (ok it's rebounded a bit this week, still down 14% from a month ago).

2011-08-17 05:14:21 PM
The price of oil hasn't been determined by supply and demand levels for quite some time now. The price is now driven more by speculation and perceptions of what the market can bear. That's why the price of oil tanked along with the rest of the market in 2008 and 2009 from $140 a barrel to less than $60 a barrel. The supply/demand ratio didn't triple in that time period.

TL;DR - Rich people control the price of your gas through speculative investments that make them richer.

Ditto... And there was no effect in normal production rates. Fire was confirmed it was extinguished in under 20 min. Or so my sources say...

Article is old. I'm working at that plant right now. In fact, the unit we're in is at the burned down tower. But we're not working on it. They've hooked it up to a bulldozer and brought it down. It looks like it crumpled in on itself.

The place is falling apart though. We've been clearing the pipes on a heat exchanger and another one went down last night. I'll be here for at least another week.

These prices are robbery. I think how much I am getting shafted every single time I voluntarily pay those prices instead of not paying them and not using gas.

Yea, this happened a couple of weeks ago. One day last week it took 3 tries to find a gas station with gas for sale, though. But then the EPA gave permission for winter grade gas to be sold, so all is well here now.

Aug 5 news. BP station in Collierville only had 87 octane last Friday for me.

Ben Bernake has also entered into QE3 which will lower the value of the dollar. So prices will go up.

It's gone down 4 cents in the past two months. HOLY SH*T I CAN BUY MYSELF A CHEESEBURGER WITH WHAT I'VE SAVED!

God I hope so. A spot of modest inflation would be the best way to clear out the bad debt overhang. (It's basically a good progressive tax since all the wealth is owned by the top 10% alone control 70% of the wealth - in reality, granny isn't living off her investments, she's waiting for her inflation-indexed Social Security check.)

They should probably take Ashland's KY refinery off that list.

More like greed and boredom.

"Say... Sir Bottomtooth III, should we raise the price of gas again?"
"My dear boy, we just did that yesterday, and I am dreadfully tired."
"RAISE IT! INFLATION TO THE INFIDELS!"
"Calm, Achmed. Jack Bauer is gone and never coming back."

Damn it, just when gas prices were almost down to just 200% of what it was when President Obama took office this crap has to happen. We can't get a break.

Funny, they completely forgot to mention they were doing that during the last Fed statement.

Or are you just talking out your arse?

I used to buy gas, and then...

www.inhabitat.com happened.

On a related note, diesel prices are hardly coming down even though gasoline fell 30 cents in the last two weeks... whats up with that?

I'm still cool with one tank a month... probably fill up around Labor Day or so.

2011-08-17 06:08:49 PM
I like how one refinery makes such an impact on the price of gas... Even with other companies that don't own said refinery...

2011-08-17 06:10:18 PM
The refinery was built in 1941and processes 195,000 barrels per day (BPD) of light, low-sulfur crude oil according to the company's website.

Built before Pearl Harbor attack. Impressive.

This.

Also, what price drop? Ours is still right around $4.00 depending on the station. The lowest I've seen it is $3.85 at 76.

Whoopie....

They were going down? Prices around me in Connecticut haven't been below $3.89 (for cash) in months. Most of the time it's steady at $4.09 (for cash).

minor fire, away from processing
I expect gas to only go up by 1-2 dollars a gallon

now if it had been a BAD esplozion, we would reallllly be farked

2011-08-17 06:36:26 PM
Oddly enough, the price of regular just increased $0.05/gallon this afternoon in my town.
