Well not everyone has an office. I enjoy not having one and I don't have a boss looking over my shoulder. I can view the ocean while I work at times. So keep your office. I will enjoy not having one.

have fun complaining to management. they won't give you a break, they will just restrict the smoke breaks. if you like bringing people down, well i guess that would be your thing. not the greatest co worker though.

seen it happen at every place i go. i bet if you got up from you desk and walked around outside they wouldn't care.

not saying you don't have a point, but it never solves anything.

A little down time to break up tasks or just allow you to collect your thoughts and muse over things is a good thing.

Of course you're not paid to do that, but well, the boss gets better results that way so he can deal. Unless he'd prefer constant working but shiattier work. Its really his choice, I guess.

Yup, pretty much.

I got fed up with people taking long smoke breaks while I was stuck working. I eventually bought a pack of cigarettes. I'd take my book outside, lit a cigarette, stick in the gap in the picnic table, the smoldering end up, and use it as a timer for when to go back in. Once a manager saw me, they restricted everyone to two smoke breaks a day. A bunch of people (who were used to 5 or 6 breaks) were pissed.

On the other hand, they were assholes, so I was happy to see them miserable.

Hmm...

Thought I was trolling trolls, but since you gave me what seems to be a sincere answer I'll just blurt out what I was really meaning to say.

I'd guess that those assholes that are allowed 20 minute breaks every hour are getting more done in 40 minutes, than the assholes that take a 5 minute break do in 2 hours.

I'm at work right now, so I'm getting a kick.

if I had to work nights without internet access, I'd fall asleep from boredom. even though it's filtered, it's nice having some way to catch up on all the sh*t you missed while you were sleeping during the day.

even if they did block it completely, I would probably just bring in my laptop. the public wireless is also filtered, but less so.

crap! sorry about that. i suck at trolling and troller-trolling(?). i'm a smoker too, and have seen all the people throwing glass stones. i never would rat or complain that a coworker surfs all day long on the net. if his or her production is good, then management usually doesn't care.

it generally seems that people that complain about other people taking "too long of a break" are the ones getting attention because they aren't performing. that's the only time i ever got mentioned for my smoke breaks (and they were right, i wasn't doing well).

sorry for blowing your cover. next smokes on me. also RatMaster999 that was an awesome idea. you should have gotten a raise.

Thanks. What I should've gotten the raise for was getting the work done that had been left by the people out smoking. Oh well, I'm no longer there, and I like my current job much better. Nobody smokes, but nobody's complained about my fark breaks, nor I about their CuteOverload breaks.

There are many types of workplace slacking, smokers are an obvious target.

I'm in a white collar job, but we still clock in and out for smoke breaks, which works well, since it gives the clean air nazis less to whine about. Nobody cares how many breaks I have providing I'm doing my hours.

Now if only we could make people swipe out for the 20 minute conversations they have with Nancy from accounts on how little Johnny is doing with his first tooth :)

I agree with the article, in certain types of job, the odd bit of slacking can be productive. Banging head on wall about an issue. Go away and do something inane/surf/natter/smoke for 10 minutes. Come back, and hey, the solution pops into your head.

As someone who takes it to an unreasonable extreme I can tell you I sometimes secretly wish the internet would be banned at work so I could get more work done... but since I'm the IT guy i'm never going to ban fark. I'm stuck doing 10 minutes of work a day. Plus i'm too busy reading the internets to go through all that hassle... of clicking buttons... I'm the king of slacking off, woo.

Regarding the smoking thing people mentioned, it must be different between bosses and employers because I can tell you that as a smoker a 4 minute break every 2 hours was still severely frowned upon (of course they didn't know about my farking), but I've quit now anyway... Hmm, I just realised, my slacking off online and farking during work has actually skyrocketed since I quit smoking.

Smoking breaks were making me a better worker :(

2011-08-17 05:33:26 AM
If they give smokers longer breaks, why not take up "smoking" As an excuse to go outside once an hour?

CSB time:

Years ago while working in an operations center our connection went down. When we had it close to fixed they asked me to start randomly typing web addresses to check things. Of course it had to be somewhere I'd never been before to ensure it wasn't just cached. At one point, after doing this for a while and running out of ideas for URLs I just typed "www.blowme.com". After I finished closing pop-ups in a panic I realized I was gonna have some 'splainin' to do to the IT guys.

And that was how I discovered Fark :)

once I had a stupid logon password and had to say it out loud to the Vietnamese IT guy so I tried to disguise it with the clever use of pauses. to wit:

A-M
