I thought they always got around this in the past by sticking him in platform shoes and hiring just barely non-certifiable midgets to be his co-stars.

2011-08-16 12:59:48 PM
Nevertheless, the author of the hit series, Lee Child, insists Cruise's height shouldn't matter: "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."

Did he really just say that? They must have paid him A LOT of money to spew bullsh*t like that.

As a midget certifier, i say good riddance.

This is nothing. He's up for the lead in the Kiki Vanderweghe biopic.

It worked in Scott of the Antarctic.

This headline (not the Fark) was a TEASE! Yes he was deemed too short, by the fans. The one group of people that folks making movies hardly ever listen to.

Yeah, I have heard interviews with the guy. He had to have been paid a lot for the rights, and doesn't want to lose out. Every fan pictures Reacher in his head as huge, graying slightly, and strong as an ox. Not a 5 foot 5 chicken fark.

It would be like if they made the Harry Potter, and instead of a castle, Hogwarts was a Best Western.

So as a guy that hasn't read the books who would be a viable casting choice?

2011-08-16 04:31:43 PM
If only there were cinematographic techniques and computer technology that could give him the illusion of being larger than he actually is.

Oh wait, there are...

There are too many agents and casting agents in the cult.

There I said it.

That's for damn sure.

Well why don't we just cast Peter farking Dinklage as Reacher while we're at it?

Actually, come to think of it... that would be awesome.

I dunno about you, but I though that the Incredible Scrawny Filter they used in Captain America kinda sucked.

"Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100-115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.[3] Reacher is strong enough to break a man's neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For). In a fight against a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid using thug, Reacher was able to lift his opponent into the air and drop him on his head."

So, yeah, Tom Cruise kinda sucks as a choice.

As much as I really enjoy most of the Reacher books, his physical prowess has always been a bit ridiculous to me. I forget which book it was, but at one point Child says Reacher was digging pools in south Florida to earn cash, with a shovel in each hand, just going like a steam engine. As someone who has spent more than a few summers building swimming pools (and more importantly, digging through south Florida soilshell rock), I had to put the book down for a few minutes. Other than a shovel being a ridiculous tool to dual-wield or one-arm, you don't dig a pool in south Florida without a digging machine and a sump pump going.

/but the breaking the guy's neck with one hand, that could definitely happen.

I could have seen Lee Marvin doing it, were he still alive, Or maybe Robert Mitchum. Y'know the actors of yore that were actually badasses in real life.
If I had to pick somebody right now, my first choice would be Mickey Rourke. If not him.....MAYBE Sean Bean.

Author + Movie Adaption of Book + Tom Cruise as Lead Character = Gazillions more dollars than you would have gotten by writing yet another crappy Reacher novel.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Sounds like this porn I'm watching. Except for the part about killing people. But I'm only about 15 minutes into it.

Kevin Nash would be perfect for this-if decent acting wasn't a requirement, that is.

This is too big a Reach(er) for Toothy Thetan.

I had a run in with Reacher in a bar once, and I kicked his farking ass.

Uhhh, no dumbass, it's a physical characteristic that is a defining facet of the established character.

I vote for Rutger Hauer. Ann Rice agrees. But as long as WETA does the CGI, we should be OK ...

I used to be OK with Cruise, then he started on the whole psychiatry thing (see: Matt Lauer outburst) ... Jesus. Just STFU and act. You want to put yourself on the line, go do a couple USO shows the the Country folks do, or go to the Sudan like Clooney did.

God, I hope he's not gay.

Solid Muldoon: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

My first thought. But I haven't read the books. Is he too young? Maybe Jason Statham if he bulked up some.

Cruise being this guy is as much a travesty in its own way as him playing Klaus von Stauffenberg.

Keven Durand would be perfect. He's big (6'6"), scary when he wants to be and is a decent actor.

I knew this without even clicking on the link. Starpulse "articles" are almost always just rumor and innuendo trolled from other sites.

child is being diplomatic. he said long ago that he would not second guess the decision because movie people don't tell him how to write books.

having said that, cruise is an absolutely terrible choice. personally, i could see mark wahlberg pulling it off. i think rutger hauer would have been a good choice several years ago, but he's too old now (for the part).

Gyrfalcon:

"Maybe Jason Statham"

i like him, but not for this role. reacher is intimidating because of his size, not his look. statham has that shady look to him. plus, not to pick nits, but the accent would kill it.

Ray Stevenson. About the right size and the right age.

My first thought was Stephen Lang, but he's only 5'10" according to IMDB. Otherwise, I think he'd be perfect for the part.

2011-08-16 07:07:04 PM
he was also totally wrong for the part of Lestat. Tom Cruise is an effeminate vampire, just not Lestat.

2011-08-16 07:43:45 PM
That dude who plays Alcide the werewolf guy on True Blood might be a good fit. IMDB has him at 6'5"

Haven't read the books.

Cruise should just leave and not let the doorknob hit him in the back of the head on his way out.

Yeah, he said it. I submitted this story a month+ ago. Emailed his publicist expressing my outrage.

Perhaps there is still hope that this travesty will not come to pass.

Agreed. But even still, a better choice than Cruz.

Tom Cruise seems to be a poor choice for most roles he is cast in. Also I do not think his height is the most glaring difference between him and Jack Reacher.

I thought of that too. It might work. Though from the last pix I saw of him he'll need a few weeks in the gym.
