When you get accused of corruption by a guy who has been arrested for for weapons charges and auto theft, and has had suspicions of arson, and accusations of intimidation with a gun, you know you're in trouble.

Birds of a feather, right?

Mr. Issa's fortune, in fact, was built on his car alarm company, and to this day it is his deep voice on Viper alarms that warns potential burglars to "please step away from the car."

Huh, no way.

I always get jealous of Republicans for being able to run for office with a shady background and no personal qualifications if you just say the right things. If I wanted to run as a Democrat, I'd have to not have done so many drugs or gotten arrested those times and have to have paid my dues to the party and be further along in my career. Such bullshiat. Maybe I could run on an Anti-Tea Party platform.

Most wealthy members of Congress push their financial activities to the side, with many even placing them in blind trusts to avoid appearances of conflicts of interest.

Except for Pelosi who somehow managed to make plenty of money during the recession.

Oh and Reid, who made an absolute killing on land deals that were largely due to him abusing the hell out of his power.

Seeing as it's a Republican politician, I assume it's leading straight to jail, to teary confessions of drug abuse sexual misconduct, or to a prison term ... for the accusor.

Republicans are the reformed smokers of the crime world. They want everything banned because they can't resist temptation even half as well as their titular diety, Oscar Wilde.

As a non-smoker, non-drinker, non-fornicator, non-traffic menace, non-Christian, I have to mock Republicans or I'd have no fun at all. Damned abstemious atheism. Why can't atheism have all the fun of banning everything without God?

But no, you have to live twice as well and twice as self-negatingly as a Christian to be thought one half as good.

Well, at least it's easy. Can't complain. Keeps me off the streets and out of trouble.

We've got lobbyists writing legislation that our legislators vote on without having read.
By comparison, widening a boulevard to benefit a medical building seems quaint.

Relevant parts in bold. Yeah.

Also, by virtue of their position, ALL politicians are corrupt. The ones that used to be big business owners/CEOs (and thus generally just bought their position) tend to be more so than others, but 'politician' in our society is synonymous with 'corrupt' these days. Party affiliation doesn't factor into it. I'm sorry that it bothers you that a publication calls a spade a spade, but maybe you should consider what you're saying instead of blinding insulting things you don't agree with. Yes, the Times has a liberal bias. No, it's not really a secret. No, it doesn't change a damn thing about reality. Do you also think people who call Obama 'Fartbama' or anything equally as retarded are funny?

2011-08-15 03:01:37 PM
Anyone have video of him crying when Arrrrnold announced he was running in Issas recall of Davis?

2011-08-15 03:03:25 PM
FTFA: As his private wealth and public power have grown, so too has the overlap between his private and business lives, with at least some of the congressman's government actions helping to make a rich man even richer and raising the potential for conflicts. He has secured millions of dollars in Congressional earmarks for road work and public works projects that promise improved traffic and other benefits to the many commercial properties he owns here north of San Diego. In one case, more than $800,000 in earmarks he arranged will help widen a busy thoroughfare in front of a medical plaza he bought for $10.3 million.

There is a name for a system of economic control that seamlessly combines the private and the public and its not "capitalism." Mr. Issa's behavior is completely antithetical to the idea of the "free market."

2011-08-15 03:04:09 PM
The article fails to mention that Darrell Issa is a (presumably) former car thief and made his fortune from a bogus insurance fire.

Rupert Murdoch has nothing to do with the Times. The Times is owned by The New York Times Company which is not at all affiliated with Newscorp. The paywall exists only to people who heavily traffic it, so if you're on a shared internet account (like at work) you might get stuck with it.

You know what? I just laughed really really hard at that, but only because I imagined him as Balrog from Street Fighter=(

It might be funny, but I don't think they're trying to be 'funny' in the sense that they're just playing it for laughs and are more trying to be 'funny' in the sense that they really don't like the guy and it's the best thing they can come up with in polite company. Making fun of someone's name out of disrespect is pretty god damn stupid and is way different from just playfully ribbing them.

This is coming, by the way, from a liberal-leaning person who doesn't like Obama at ALL.

Personally, I think the NY Times is conservative: old, stodgy, establishment. Like much of the Democratic party. Course, the Republicans have gone full bore antiestablishment lately, not to mention anti-woman, anti-intellectual, anti-sex, and regression to at least the guilded age, if not to before the Enlightenment.

Invesco, as the AIM fund's manager is now known, told The Times it did not provide Mr. Issa's foundation the steep discount. That suggests the foundation may have acquired the shares from a third-party broker.
