Calm down, you will be fine. Kittens are a lot more self sufficient than you think, and you obviously know your place...

And don't panic the first time little Ben Hurr suddenly stops running around playing and investigating things and just falls over to take a nap. This is normal. :o)

Thanks...didn't think about that last part...to me I always thought kittens would be all ZOOOOOOM!!! CRASH! WHAZZAT?!?! WHAT'S OVER THERE?! DOES THIS TASTE GOOD??? ALL THIS IS MINE, AND MINE, ANNND MINE, RUUUUUUN, JUMP! SKEDDADDLE! ARCHY BACK! HISSY FIT! SPAZ! MEW MEW MEW MEW!!!!

Branch Dravidian: A question for the hive mind:

Manjula (5-year-old spayed female) appears to be having issues with boredom and separation anxiety while I am out of the house. I am contemplating getting her a companion cat, but when I ask experts for advice I get conflicting information.

My vet says that I need to get a (neutered) male, as two females will treat each other as rivals. He suggests a kitten or very young adult so she does not feel threatened, and there is no question from the start who is the alpha and who is the beta.

The staff at the shelter I got her from say that sex is not important, but that the new cat should be an adult (2 years +) because older cats have little patience with a kitten's neediness and playfulness.

Any thoughts?

Cats being the unpredictable creatures they are, get a cat YOU like.

M/F, young/old. it doesn't matter.

The Ice Queen: So I'm feeling all stabby today.

My cousin found a kitten that someone threw out of a car. It between 2 and 3 months old. Limps on back leg and has stuff all over front legs and feet. I come home and go a close look at him before we go to the vet and I'm starting to get mad. Get to the vet and confirmed what I was thinking, kitten was abused. The gunk was hot wax that was poured on him and his back leg was broken though the tibial plateau. They had to sedate him to get the wax off and now his poor little feet are raw. We have to treat him like he was just declawed. They're also going to cast his leg in the hope it knits but no guarantee it won't have to be amputated in the next few weeks. If it does manage to heal, he will be gimpy (which I don't mind, we already have a gimpy cat, a one eyed cat, and heck, I'm gimpy). It just ticks me off to no end that someone could do that to a kitten.

hi, all, been kinda busy the last few days.

remember the pregnant stray i mentioned? well, about a week to 10 days ago, she wasn't pregnant any more. though she will let me pet her, i'm not able to pick her up to check her tummy for signs of nursing, nor will she roll over giving me a look. i'd kind of decided the kittens hadn't made it, or she'd abandoned them.

well, when i got home last wednesday, about 8pm, i saw something unusual in the yard--a kitten! he was cool and damp, out in the yard all by himself, so i brought him inside. once he was dry and warm i tried to give him back to mom but she would have none of it. she not only ignored him, when i put him close to her she ran away.

so i'm bottle-raising my second kitten. i had been in touch with the local humane society about getting the strays fixed so they were able to tell me about someone who could provide day care. even though she's currently fostering about a dozen kittens i'm very lucky that she will watch him while i work.

Wait, I thought nothing was obscure on Fark!? :o) Seriously, although the original book has spawned something like elbenty six dozen sequels, the first one (IMHO) is definitely worth a read. Despite having been written in 1965, the science holds up amazingly well.

LOL! I know it sounds cruel and heartless, but it is so much damn fun! (been there, done that). I just wanted to give her a heads up that kittens act like they have a remote control somewhere and when someone hits the "power" button, they just keel over on the spot and become absolutely comatose.

About four years ago we got a companion Kitten (female) for our five year old cat female). The older cat was intrigued by the younger and they get along well the majority of the time. It helps that the younger one is now a smaller cat than the older. The only time they have any problem is when the younger one tries to exert dominance.

huh. hadn't thought of that... could be.

around the time mom wasn't pregnant any more, the dogs especially became very interested in the air vent in the bedroom floor. i didn't put the two things together until i brought buster in--are (or were) they hearing kittens?

last night i went part of the way under the trailer with a flashlight and didn't see or hear anything but i'm not sure that means much. everyone is less interested in the floor vent in the last day or so, too.

time to wake him up for dinner:

Scrotum? Are the meds kicking in there sweetheart?

No.
