News we couldn't really use from our vet a short time ago: sr cat Ginger is officially diabetic. Sorta like moi, tho I can't share my insulin with him. Wrong type, & too strong. Will be able to use some of my testing apparatus for him, tho.
He's lost weight, piddles where it suits him; like my mother prior to my own diagnosis, we just didn't tumble to it. But since high blood glucose levels aren't quite as dangerous for critters as for hoo-mons, it appears we can Go Away briefly as we plan to be home Sun mid-PM, & reasonably expect to find him still breathing.
In this we may be lucky to have decades of experience! Did we not, we'd've had a Mind Trip Round The Bend (too many of those altogether lately!) & definitely Stayed Home.
Ah well, Real Life: what happens when you thought you were making Other Plans.

FWIW I've had friends with diabetic Maine Coons that put their cats on the "Catkins DIet" (very low carbs, high protein) and it seems to have reversed the course of diabetes in their kitties and now they are perfectly healthy

Not unlike people with beginning stages of type 2.

A question for the hive mind:

Manjula (5-year-old spayed female) appears to be having issues with boredom and separation anxiety while I am out of the house. I am contemplating getting her a companion cat, but when I ask experts for advice I get conflicting information.

My vet says that I need to get a (neutered) male, as two females will treat each other as rivals. He suggests a kitten or very young adult so she does not feel threatened, and there is no question from the start who is the alpha and who is the beta.

The staff at the shelter I got her from say that sex is not important, but that the new cat should be an adult (2 years +) because older cats have little patience with a kitten's neediness and playfulness.

Any thoughts?

Oh those are great! Thank you for the extra pics. I am surprised no one has tried to domesticate/add them to the housecat gene pool

I wouldn't be surprised it's happened, but the biggest obstacle is that they can't survive below 25 degrees F or so. The African Wildcat variants that are domestic cats are much better suited for the temperature ranges on most of the planet.

Speaking of which, mine is loving this 100 degree weather. Seeing her sprawled out in the sun with a grin on her face when it's boiling hot is amazing to my measly human physique.

maynerdkitty: spinach gunk: maynerdkitty: Why are they endangered? loss of habitat, or hunting?

Hunting. :( Some get nabbed for the exotic pet trade, but most are picked off by farmers for threatening their livestock. (Understandable considering how difficult it must be to raise livestock in the arid regions native to the sand cat, but still doesn't seem right.) Hunting of the sand cat is thankfully prohibited by law in several East African and Middle Eastern countries.

Bonus fact: Its Latin name is Felis margarita!

I just looked it up on Wiki. good little article. I love the big ears and tiny faces on these little cats. Still want to cuddle one but I think I'll stick to my own kitties. Jerry came to sit in my lap and even went to check out a guest on the farm, He is so friendly. Tom came up but he wanted to bite so I made him get down.

I would suggest you talk to the shelter about bringing home a male kitten that really grabs your heart for a trial run. What happened in our family was I brought home a feral 7 week old girl kitten from my office to my 5 year old brother kitties. They fell in love with her at first sight and cleaned her and showed her all of their tricks. Now she is the boss in charge here. This is a picture of her handiwork this week when she figured out where the new toys were.

jso2897: I am going to do something I have never done here - ask for help and advice.
Meet Schrodinger:
[i18.photobucket.com image 350x255]
This is an old pic - he's three now, and a great, healthy cat. But he is a terrible territorial marker.
Whenever he gains access to a "forbidden" space, he's very likely to mark. Same when a new object - especially one belonging to a woman - is brought into the house, he will often mark it.
And there is one particular armchair that he has ruined by marking it until it was soaked.
He is healthy, with perfect blood and excretory studies. He was altered as a young kitten.
He uses both the litter box and the outdoors freely - and never craps anywhere wrong or pees on a horizontal surface - it's all spraying vertical surfaces.
I have tried cleaning up and using repellents - no dice. I have things covered with plastic - and that saves the things, but he still has sprayed some covered objects.
I am currently trying a pheromone mimicking spray called "feliway", but I am beginning to think that purchase was an example of a fool and forty dollars being lucky to get together in the first place.
The problem has been somewhat ameliorated, but not solved - and I need some new ideas.

We had the same problem with Cooper. He is much better now and no longer sprays. I have some things you can try to curb this behavior. (sorry so long)

Just to make sure it is nothing medical, you should take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection. If he checks out medically, then you can concentrate on trying to take care of the behavior issues. There is a great article on Cat behavior that helped us find a solution for Cooper. Working with our vet, we determined that Cooper has some social anxieties that were causing him to spray. With our vets advice, we tried several different medications until we found one that works for him,

The process to find the right medication is not a fast one. It can take 2 - 6 weeks or more on one medication for it to build up in the cats system and start working. Then, if it isn't the right medication for your cat, he must be weaned off the medication slowly before you can try something else so patience is a must. With the assistance of our vet, we decided to try Prozac. It worked for many months but then Coop started spraying again. We upped the dosage and again, it seemed to work for a few months and then stopped working.

We tried a couple of other meds before trying a generic form of Paxil called Paroxetine. He has been on this medication for a couple of years now and it has really made a difference. The Paroxetine, along with a Feliway collar has calmed him enough so that he no longer sprays. He does not act drugged out and is not a zombie. He still has some social anxieties but is like a different cat.

I highly recommend that you download the article, share it with your vet, and work with your vet to find a medicine that will help your cat. We love Cooper and getting rid of him was not an option for us. With a lot of hard work and some trying times, we finally found a way to have him be a part of our family. I hope for the same for you and your cat.

Something. Ain't. Right.

Are you certain this kitty had both nuts cut??? This sounds like an unaltered male. Is there any possibility he has a retained testicle that didn't get found?

And let's talk outdoor/indoor

He may be marking "indoors" because he is low man on totem pole outdoors... try keeping him exclusively indoors to so he is not exposed to other males and their scent marks... thus, triggered to mark his territory, which is inside your house.
