....a Jew named Christopher?

2011-08-11 07:29:54 PM
FTFA: Christopher Henry, who was convicted of first-degree sodomy...

I hope his first degree sodomy was blessed by a Rabbi.

Matzoh and grape juice? Sounds like a lame-ass seder.

2011-08-11 08:15:54 PM
Sounds like this guy is one of those inmates that just wants to keep filing suits to get out of jail now and then for court.

"Christopher Henry, who was convicted of first-degree sodomy, claimed permanent trauma and malnourishment and requested nearly $10 billion in damages for what he called a violation of his First Amendment right to religious freedom."

For the trauma I suffered from religious discrimination, I would like...ten billion dollars!!!!

Abox: seder

Jackass didn't even want it for Pesach; sounds like he's just trying to get attention. Get a bottle of grape juice from the commissary and keep it in your cell for Shabbat, idiot.

No wonder he's not allowed conjugal visits.

Um... first degree sodomy?

Is that a strange way to say butt rape?

'cause if he just drilled a willing participant in the cornhole he shouldn't be in jail.

I've seen the sodomy charge before but usually it goes along with some kind of assault and/pedo charge.

Please tell me there aren't still states where you can get locked up for plain old buttsex.

There must be more going on here. Lawrence vs. Texas invalidated all the sodomy laws in the USA.

So he wants a religious food item not for the holiday it is specified for, which means he just wants special food treatment. How is this a first amendment violation? In NY prisons, Jewish prisoners get Matza and grape juice for passover seder, and they get Challah and grape juice for the Sabbath, to make first amendment accommodations (this is an old legal ruling). But this guy it just nuts and trying to get attention. The court is already providing him with everything he religiously needs, which is according to law, he just want extras

Another story says he (new window) did not request it merely for Pesach. That would be a significant difference-but still, for every Shabbat? Is this guy's rabbi Walter Sobchek?

Sodomy in the third degree

Sodomy in the first degree

Well the sodomy charge is somewhat strange...but I digress...it is bread and grape Koolaid..it's not like the guy was asking for a filet every other day....they could prepare that in the the prison kitchen. However, I am also betting money the guy is not all the way stable, but still grape juice and bread...c'mon it would probably be cheaper, that's like a starving artist meal.

I think that the prisoners should become property of the state since we are supporting their sorry asses, make them earn their keep. Clean roads, graffiti, pick up trash, and repair public housing and other shiat jobs for the state, pay them 12 cents an hour. Then charge them room and board. Then they wouldn't have the time for BS lawsuits.
By the way, No Grape juice for you A-Hole.

Lots of inmates will ask for kosher food as the meals are usually better than prison food.

Same on airplanes. Though prison food might be better there too.

Nothing to see here. His dumb luck to get a Jewish judge. He already sees a rabbi and gets Kosher meals. Next time, he should try an Israeli jail. Or convert to a religion that requires Hagen Dasz served on in a cabana on the leeward side of the Bahamas. Maybe something that includes Hailie Selassie, rasta and reefer.

There are apparently some:

Chris Hitchens

And more from: http://weirdjews.livejournal.com/1376911.html
Chris Kattan
Christopher Baron (Spin Doctors lead singer)
Chris Weitz (American Pie director)
Christopher Guest (actor)
Christine Lakin (actress w/ Jewish father)
Chris Blackwell (record producer)
Chris Robinson (Black Crows)
Chris Stein (Blondie)
Chris Berman (sportscaster w/ Jewish father)

I once stuck something like "Jews named Chris" as a category into the wikipedia, and it was promptly deleted.

I'm guessing that NY uses the common law definition of "rape," which requires penile-vaginal penetration. In that case, "sodomy" does not refer to consensual anal or oral sex, but "rape" when it involves the anus or mouth, rather than the vagina. In some states, New Mexico, for instance, they've eliminated the traditional distinctions, and just call it all "criminal sexual penetration."

I'm not really up on my aramaic (or hebrew for that matter, with few exceptions, if there's no vowels I'm lost) but I thought Jesus's name was Yeshua.

Really? pretty sure Jesus is translation/corruption of Yeshua or Yehoshua - both of which, in English, are Joshua.

And Yehoshua is Joshua. It is a variation on the name, however.

Anyway it's all useless when it's written with English characters

Religious people think that their deity will "forgive" them and let them into 'heaven' in spite of the horrible things they did to get imprisoned in the first place if they participate in the little 'rules' of their religion.

A "god" that encourages such lowly 'toadying' hardly deserves worship.

The state is preventing the inmate from going to the store to purchase matzoh or grape juice or holding employment outside prison that would earn money for such purchases. Furthermore the state is responsible for passing the laws and enforcing them against the inmate in conflict with what the inmate was doing beforehand. It is solely because of the state's actions that the inmate is experiencing deprivation; obviously the inmate would not be experiencing it if the state either (a) did not exist or (b) had taken no action against him. It is the height of self-serving rationalization for the state to claim that enforcement of laws -- again, laws created by the state, not the inmate -- was an inevitability that the inmate should have anticipated and so conformed his behavior, to avoid consequences imposed by... wait for it... the STATE. Do we not see a pattern here?

Actually it was Yeshu, which is the Arameic variant for Yehoshua (hebrew), Jesus is the latin name for him. Many jews in Judea at that time used the Arameic variation of their names (similar to many people today with English names or in the Chassidic world, Yiddish variant)

There was a famous Italian Rabbinic family called Milano. And before the expulsion from Spain the Rodriguez's and Castro's were two prominent Jewish Rabbinic families in Spain. While many changed the family names when they fled, some kept it. like the man who invented the "Castro convertable" Bernie Castro were Jewish. And because many who stayed in spain moved to the new world before they started the inquisition, many Latino surnames are Seferdic Jewish in origin. There are many names that you wouldn't realize were Jewish, historically were.

Yes, but Christopher is not one of those names. :P

I'm not saying there aren't Jews that have the names. Ones who converted or were perhaps raised by non-religious parents... but... it's still a very odd name for a practicing Jew to have.

And if one did have the name for whatever reason, you'd think one would go by their Hebrew name if they were observant.

2011-08-11 11:33:34 PM
jedihirsch: Actually it was Yeshu, which is the Arameic variant for Yehoshua (hebrew)

Except that this name is not Aramaic, it is Hebrew. It was used in Tanach before Aramaic became the lingua franca in eretz Israel. I agree that it's a variation of the name (as I have pointed out). Still, Yankev is not the same as Yaakov, even if they are a variation. You wouldn't transliterate it from Yiddish as Yaakov, same for Yeshua ym"s and Joshua.

Also see Toldot Yeshu for more on that name re: ayin and other stuff
