Rest in peace, Anna Lindh.

2003-09-11 07:32:05 AM
That was the freakiest feeling ever. The news headline on TV behind me (ABC TV Australia) gave a report on the "murder of Anna Lindh" at the exact same moment as I read it out here.

2003-09-11 07:32:33 AM
After the death of Palme who was somewhat of a hero to the European peace movement, another shock from Sweden for European Community supporters.... Quite sad....

2003-09-11 07:36:02 AM
My condolences. I guess even in an open and peaceful and progressive society like Sweden these things can happen. Its tragic from the point of view of her family. I hope the Swedes catch the guy this time

2003-09-11 07:36:07 AM

This bird was a big campaigner for sweeden to join the Euro in the up comming referendum.

I bet she was killed (willingly,) by one of her own supporters to increase sympathy for the yes vote.

These bloody pro-europeans will stop at nothing.

2003-09-11 07:38:11 AM
For me as a Swede and a supporter of her ideas and ideologies it's a very sad day for me.

My deepest condoleances to her family, friends and collegues.

Rest in Peace.

2003-09-11 07:39:39 AM
This is sad. Most of us not in the EU assume that all the member nations are keen on being a part of it. Looks like nationalism runs high for some fringe elements no matter where you are.

I'm assuming it was related to her support for Sweden to be more integrated into the EU. If it isn't, then it's just plain scary that someone can committ a murder in broad daylight in a department store like that.

Off topic, I've seen that store. I was in Stockholm last year for a conference. I really like the old city area, even if it is for tourists.

2003-09-11 07:43:42 AM
Commander_Keen: It is sad. Is it really that impossible to have a society where politicians can walk around on the streets like any other citizen without the need of a posse of body guards? I refuse to accept that, damn it! I hope they catch the asshat who did it quickly.

/Frustrated

2003-09-11 07:43:55 AM
Hinkley?

2003-09-11 07:44:05 AM
Damn those knives. Will we never learn?

RIP

2003-09-11 07:44:06 AM
My sister worked with Anna Lindh at the Swedish government. Evereybody loved her, this must be an act of insanity. I work at the news at swedens biggest television channel and it's chaos here right now.
This just in: a copycat stabber injured a 5 year old girl at a kindergarten today. What's wrong with this world?

2003-09-11 07:46:28 AM
To use her death as an argument to vote yes on sunday is INCREDIBLY low

told you they would. proeuros are scum.

2003-09-11 07:49:20 AM
Who said I was telling people how to vote? I'm just commenting as a non-EU. Don't be so farking paranoid.

2003-09-11 07:50:04 AM
Sunking

Who knows mate.. lets hope... it could have just been some random nutter and not a political thing, but i doubt it... I guess thats the price of a decent society.

Seriously guys, don't get sucked in by the trolls here...

2003-09-11 07:50:18 AM
OJ?

They have Golf Courses there, right?

2003-09-11 07:52:49 AM
Jonc, I have no words ...

2003-09-11 08:01:46 AM
She was attacked and stabbed repeatedly in the middle of a store, a lot of people around her, and no one had the balls to either stop or follow the murderer.

How in hell could you just stand by and watch someone get gut into pieces, and then stand there as a fool, watching, when the guy runs away.

In broad daylight he manages to "disapear" from eyewitnesses and the police? Civil-courage my ass! Where is the old Viking-mentality when you need it?

2003-09-11 08:03:16 AM
Im lost for words, there was alot talk about that politicans should have the right to privacy and not have to be surrounded by body guards. In the middle of the Euro campaign she takes a break and goes shopping with a friend and gets stabbed to death...

2003-09-11 08:04:13 AM
and no one had the balls to either stop or follow the murderer.

You're judging in entire incident by this one article? Chances are that if someone was jumped on and stabbed right in front of me I probably wouldn't realise it until it was too late and then be hit by shock.

Stabbings like this go on around the entire world including in, /gasp/ America. Jesus, I must be an anti-American for saying that. Criticising Swedish society for the reaction to the incident, whioch you really don't know the full details of, is not very bright.

2003-09-11 08:04:35 AM
Jonc

syberpud you're a farking asshole. To use her death as an argument to vote yes on sunday is INCREDIBLY low.

I saw nothing in syberpuds post intended to persuade a vote in either direction.

2003-09-11 08:06:56 AM
I think s/he meant bigbox30. The lack of intelligence displayed by some people is incredible. Let's use his farked up logic: the Jews masterminded the Holocaust to get sympathy for an Israeli state.

Tit.

2003-09-11 08:08:48 AM
Thanks, BINNSTER..I was kind of wondering WTF myself.

2003-09-11 08:14:11 AM
Yeah, this is just what Sweden needs as autumn closes in and darkness falls. The only minister in the Swedish government worthy of some respect gets stabbed by some low life drug addict who happened to carry a knife and wanted to exact some hands-on political influence.

And of course, the keystone cops of Swedish police forces are going to fark this one up royally, just as they did with the prime minister when he got blown away by some lowlife. And the murderer won't be found and there's nothing to do but get even more depressed. Gah.

Good politicians get stabbed to death, and people like Rumsfeld gets to keep sucking air. I just don't get it.

"Is it really that impossible to have a society where politicians can walk around on the streets like any other citizen without the need of a posse of body guards?"

Actually I thought Sweden was one of those countries. Friend of mine lived in Stockholm for a year and once told of how this minister and that minister and this other candidate were out and about meeting people and so on...

2003-09-11 08:23:47 AM
To put some flame on another fire: In sweden everyone and their mother does not wear guns.

And how bad is the security in that place if a guy can walk in, stab a woman to swiss cheeze, drop the knife and jog away?

2003-09-11 08:28:29 AM
Why do I smell impending legislation mandating compulsory registration of all knives? Get a license to use a knife, must prove you have a place to store it safely. And each blade must be registered with the government for a "stabbing fingerprint."

I saw a different article, simply labelled "Lindh dies." I'm thinking September 11...John Walker Lindh...oh fark...

2003-09-11 08:29:37 AM
Zmog unlike the US stabbing in the street isn't that common. It happens, but not that often. So we/they ( I live in norway) Don't high security guards with guns in our malls. And we got our freedom to go anywhere we want without being watched all the time.

2003-09-11 08:32:27 AM
Zmog, sorry to piss on your flame, but this happened so fast and unexpectedly that i don't think it would have mattered if it had been in Texas and everyone being armed to the teeth.

In a crowded department store, push her down on the floot, stab stab stab, run. Just like that. The police who came to the scene werent even aware that the wounds were serious.

2003-09-11 08:35:26 AM
Gromitcu, actually, carrying a knife or any other concealed weapon is already illegal in Sweden. However, it's kind of hard to enforce, as you can imagine.

2003-09-11 08:35:51 AM
"Criticising Swedish society for the reaction to the incident, whioch you really don't know the full details of, is not very bright."

Allright Mr Bright-brain.
Read my post once more, and you -might- see that it was the bystanders that I critizised. The Swedish society can suck or win a nobel prize as far as I care, but if a 45 year old woman gets stabbed in public, in a crowded store, with a lot of eyewitnesses, and the asshat doing it manages to flee without a trace, something is fundamentaly wrong.

Am I making my self clear, or do you want me to clarify what I type even more?

2003-09-11 08:36:03 AM
syperpud: Looks like nationalism runs high for some fringe elements no matter where you are.

Later .. Don't be so farking paranoid.

You should take your own advice. Many pro- and anti-Euros are pretty fervent.

Some EU member nations, like France, are radically nationalist.

SWORDED!!

/Was Trogdor around??

Atypical actually.

Our hearts and our condolences go out to the people of Sweden on this day of tragedy.

Bjoern, the scum managed to escape, which wouldnt be too hard in any situation if you perpetate a crime in about two seconds and then just run like hell in a crowded environment.

How would you propose it should have been prevented? Israeli-style with everyone walking around with a loaded uzi cocked and ready to go? Sorry, but Sweden's a civilized country. Which, of course, means that if someone decides to act uncivilized, they can get away with it.

As sick as that makes me, it's still way better than the alternative.

2003-09-11 08:48:33 AM
Up until this, you made sense: Good politicians get stabbed to death, and people like Rumsfeld gets to keep sucking air.

That's as sorry as: the Taliban killed people who didn't even vote for Bush. (Moore)

Qould you feel better if only people of the "right" political persuasion died?

It's lame when some religious nut blames new york deaths on liberals, it's lame when some liberal nut wishes it was a conservative instead. (You didn't go that far, but that was a breath away.)

2003-09-11 08:48:54 AM
anotherbob we have radical "states rights" groups in the US. Many of them use that as a cover for a more radical agenda: anti-tax, anti-immigration, racial superiority, etc. though a few are actually against a firm federal government.

There are a lot of nationalistic movements as well, but few are taken seriously. Even though they get press (Pat Buchannan), they are not the mainstream political viewpoint.

They are viewed with disdain by the majority. I know there are groups like this in every country, but I don't let them influence my beliefs.

2003-09-11 08:49:08 AM
Don't let the asshat Americans speak for all of us. To see a nation so free, safe, and open damaged in this way is truly sad. Peace and healing to you all....

2003-09-11 08:49:14 AM
If only they had a 10 day waiting period for knives in Sweeden.......

"if a 45 year old woman gets stabbed in public, in a crowded store, with a lot of eyewitnesses, and the asshat doing it manages to flee without a trace, something is fundamentaly wrong."

actually Bjoern --this is very common--its not something fundamentally wrong--its human nature. people sit and watch and do nothing when something that shocking happens. for one reason or another helplessness sets in. in fact--its FAR more likely for someone to be helped when there is only 1 or 2 people around than when you're dealing w\ a large crowd. We've all heard the story of the girl in New York who got stabbed in broad daylight...group-think is scary

If this had happened in America there would be 300 post saying it was our fault, we deserved it ......

suck it up or shut up next time.

oh yeah, you forgot to blame Bush.

2003-09-11 08:52:13 AM
anotherbob--i agree with you. but i think generally these liberals (including moore) dont actually mean it when they say that...its a statement of the ironic or just a cynical remark\joke. i'm not so sure about the other persuasian...who actually do go so far as to kill...just my $0.02

2003-09-11 08:54:24 AM
Sorry, but Sweden's a civilized country. Which, of course, means that if someone decides to act uncivilized, they can get away with it.

So that's what "civilized" means!

Obviously it's not so difficult for something like this to happen in any country - Sweden, the US, or Israel. But the ability for people to get away with murder isn't the mark of a "civilized" region. Far from it, it's the mark of a region that needs to review its internal security.

They'll probably find out that they couldn't have prevented it. But it's better to run that review than to simply surrender: "Ahh, the price of civilization! Well, let's have a few beers and hope it's not one of us tomorrow!"

2003-09-11 08:54:39 AM
Anotherbob, you're perfectly correct. I'm actually sorry i said that about Rumsfeld. Any other day, paticipating in discussions such as this, it's kind of easy to say stuff like you wish this or that asshat were dead. But today, it kind of leaves a sour aftertaste.

So Rumsfeld may live. I surrender. Sorry for this very un-fark-like crybaby post. But today, as a Swede, i'm just depressed.

2003-09-11 08:59:42 AM
Back to the point - this is horrible. Sorry Swedes.
