I'm drinking a 1-Liter bottle of Fiji, so I'm getting a kick out of this. ^_^

This cannot be true.

Rick Perry and a bunch of people prayed.

Yeah, it's real serious in this area. Worst heat and drought I've seen here, worse than any of the old timers have seen.

DFW set a record for highest minimum temperature last night. 84 degrees broke the record of 83 degrees set on August 8, 1947. We're also on track to break the record of 42 days in a row of triple digit heat on Friday that was set back in 1980 because of a volcano.

You're in Oklahoma, right? Have you gotten any rain at all? I don't think we've seen a rain cloud since May.

We got about ten drops yesterday, just enough to make it muggy and hot. Then a big farking 60 mph wind came through to dry it back off.

We got a nice summer shower just SW of OKC, so the temps stayed in the low 100's. While it was nice, it soaked in immediately and now it is 108 and as dry as ever. The ponds, lakes, and rivers are ask really low. The Canadian river South of Mustang is completely dry in many areas.

The town recently began its first pipeline repair project in years. It's spending $350,000 to replace 4,000 feet of pipe.
City leaders concede that much more work is needed.

Much of the town's 30 miles of pipeline date to the 1930s and haven't been updated in decades. The dry, hot ground caused 14 major water main breaks in the past three weeks alone - essentially draining the city's water reserves

Yet more disintegrating American infrastructure. But don't touch that defense budget, no sir.

Yeah, it is over in the eastern part of 35 as well. It has allowed the wild pigs to cross at will, and they are tearing stuff up looking for water. Mmmmm, bacon.

muck4doo: Laid to rest one of my tomato plants yesterday. It couldn't handle the heat anymore. :(

The only good is that my peppers are either sweeter than normal, or hotter than hell in the summer, depending on the variety. I just ate a red cayenne off the plant and that puppy has some power compared to most years. Tomatoes.....yeah, just cherry tomatoes that wont ripen, everything else is toast..... oh, and I'm still getting okra.

I've never seen so little rain in one year in Texas in all my 23 years of life.

2011-08-08 08:29:18 PM
Yes, no wonder things are falling apart when they haven't been upgraded in 80 YEARS. WTF?!?! Put some money into your cities and areas! But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, taxes are the devil!

2011-08-08 08:49:55 PM
It's so bad here in Texas that when I drive over a bridge I don't even bother to see if the river I'm driving over has any water in it.

If Rick Perry got his wish and Texas did become an independent nation, it would be a third world hellhole in no time at all.

Oh, there'd be a few rich places, like Dallas, Houston, and (maybe) Austin. But it would also have slums that people from Rio would be shocked by.

My Tom that died was a Jersey Devil. It's been fail the whole season. No fruit in the spring, but got big. It just started wilting away and nothing stopped it. Chopped it this weekend. Letting the dirt dry some before i dig up the roots and see what they look like. The rest are still growing, and I'm still getting a few toms off of Garden Peach, Black Krim, Early Annie, Arkansas Traveler, and Marmande, although they all look like they won't be producing anymore till fall. My peppers all fruited by late June except the Habanero. They're all dead now. The habanero is still alive but hasn't given me anything.

Dear Governor Perry,

You prayed for an answer from God.

And God answered. He said "FARK YOU!!"

I have to wonder, how much more drought must we suffer before we start to question if this is divine punishment for re-electing Perry?

It's really sad that some of us have to live in these conditions. There seems to be such a gap b/w the way we, as Americans, view (or used to view) our country and the way it actually can be. Imagine telling those same residents back in 2001 that in ten years they would not have such a basic service as water.

Here in Heathen Country (Coastal West Los Angeles), temps have been in the mid- to high 70s. Heck, I wore a long sleeve shirt to school today.

Our entire yard is dead, the plants in the greenhouse are crispy and none of our trees even flowered this year. We couldn't afford to keep everything watered as much as it needed. Even our pepper plants didn't bear anything. That itself doesn't bother me. What scares me is that the soil from our lawn looks like it has absolutely no nutrients in it at all. I'm afraid the soil is barren and we'll never have grass in our yard again.

This looks like a bootstrappy Teabagger who would be to first the whine and shriek if they tried to increase the town's taxes to upgrade the water treatment plant.

Hey imagine that. In my state we pay taxes, and those taxes go towards fixing things. It's a radical concept that should be explained to these people.

That's crazy. And here in Atlanta I thought it was the heat this year that made my peppers so prolific. I can't give away enough hot bananas, jalapenos, cayenne, and poblanos. There are probably about 40 cayennes on one plant right now that I haven't picked because I don't know what the hell to do with them. It rains for about 30 minutes every other day here.

My Brandywine tomatoes are absolute toast though.

Di Atribe: I don't think we've seen a rain cloud since May.

Here in California, we refer to that phenomena as "Summer". Somehow we and our massive, multiyear reservoirs of water manage to last until the rain returns in November. It must be because God loves us more.

Fellow Americans openly mocking and taking pleasure in their countrymen suffering from (one of) the worst drought(s) in the state's history.

George Washington would be real proud of you guys.
