You also should read S&P's justification of the downgrade. You don't have to guess which part of our government is primarily responsible for the downgrade, they come right out and tell you.

But then again, if you actually used your brain and read what S&P was saying, then you wouldn't be a pathetic Republican shill.

Well it's not that easy, but our financial problems are easily still manageable to the point that they could surely be addressed by responsible, competent legislators with the best interests of the nation in mind and the willingness to take political risks and make tough choices in the name of good, rational, long-term public policy. Fine, yeah, we're screwed.

Probably stumbling into troll bait but the criticisms of S&P, and the reason for the downgrade, is that the deficit deal didn't do enough to address entitlements, which is exactly what the tea party was trying to reform. Democrats blocked those changes.

S&P downgrades the United States' credit rating? What a joke. Standard and Poors? This is the SAME Company that gave the Mortgage Backed Securities of the top financial institutions AAA Ratings. I wouldn't trust S&P to rate the financial security of my nephew's lemonade stand.

These rating agencies are in the pocket of the banks they supposedly rate. S&P does what Goldman Sachs and UBS tell it to do. By the way, with the rating downgraded, these same banks get to charge us higher interest rates. They'll make more money by weaker investor confidence in the US Government.

Well, if a rating is a indicator of financial confidence... Between Standard and Poors and the Treasury of the United States of America... I think I'll trust the latter.

Here's an idea. Invest heavily in the Treasury Note, and pull your money out of the top 10 Banks. Put them into community banks and credit unions who are actually lending money to small businesses instead of the big banks that make their money on usurious interest rates, astronomically high fees and government bail-out recapitalization strategies.

Then let's see what these jerks at S&P say.

The problem is our politicians didn't see that AND in there and the holy grails of lower taxes and increased entitlement spending had to be protected at all costs because...just, because...sigh

Hi, leftist idiot here, just popping up to point out that only one party actually gave ground in compromise. And that this situation originated in the 1/3 branch of govt lead by the GOP. And that, when you come out actually stating you have no intention of even rationally discussing thing by declaring your opponents to be leftist idiots, that you contribute to the problem.

We all live in this country. We have to get along. We're not going away and it's time to shut the fark up and start learning how to work together. You and yours don't get to run roughshod over the USA anymore. And your hysterical cries of treason and misdirection fall on deaf ears.

Yeah, because that's what they said right?

Oh no wait, it was....

"We lowered our long-term rating on the U.S. because we believe that the prolonged controversy over raising the statutory debt ceiling and the related fiscal policy debate indicate that further near-term progress containing the growth in public spending, especially on entitlements, or on reaching an agreement on raising revenues is less likely than we previously assumed and will remain a contentious and fitful process. We also believe that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration agreed to this week falls short of the amount that we believe is necessary to stabilize the general government debt burden by the middle of the decade."

tldr? it's the fact we keep kicking the can instead of committing ourselves to a long term fix

you can blame both sides, but only one side was ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED to neither make
-a long term solution
-a solution including revenue

unless you count their 'bba' which is lolololol

From up North here it seems that the US Government cannot stop spending. For decades now.

The silliest thing I have ever read is that a bill can have stuff attached to it which totals more than the bill itself. And the stuff all seems to be frivolous that is not needed at all, especially as the treasury is running a deficit.

For farks sake, STOP SPENDING on crap!

Then you would not need to raise some artificially set number...

Anyone who thinks this is one parties fault is drinking the kool-aid of their respective party.

This is on both Democrats and Republicans. We should have been working for a balanced budget for the last 20 years, but BOTH parties kept spending. Anyone that says "Clinton balanced the budget" needs a cock-punch, because he borrowed from social security (like other Presidents before him) to fake the numbers and claim he did so...voodoo mathmatics in anyone's book.

Simply put, we need to cut spending a LOT, balance the budget, get term limits, and even (gasp) raise taxes) in order to fix this mess our politicians have gotten us into over the last 20+ years.

More broadly, the downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges to a degree more than we envisioned when we assigned a negative outlook to the rating," S&P said.

The shiat hit the fan and S&P is calling it as it sees it. Our political system is so broken, that we are incapable of taking the most basic steps to improve our economy.

Either political party can spin it whichever way they want: the fact remains that this is a problem that is not going to be "fixed" in one or two voting cycles. It's a decaying, rotting system that is about to go under.
