Well, everything else in our society is disposable...

2011-08-05 03:24:18 AM
Freedom isn't free and apparently neither are Purple Hearts. As retired Sergeant Major of the Army Rob Dickerson found out, they too can come with a price.

Is this poor reporting, or was this guy really the senior enlisted man in the Army?

Dickerson did get an apology and a money order for his out of pocket costs, but he says he couldn't cash it, because it was made out to Roy Dirksen, not Rob Dickerson.

So sorry, Mr. Buttle.

Someone in the department responsible for issuing these must have decided that sending it by mail, COD, was the right thing to do. What were they thinking?

Someone at the VA needs to get their ass chewed by a Sergeant Major.

They couldn't even get his name right? No wonder they couldn't give it to him in the first place, they didn't know who he was.

Wait, COD still exists?

Yeah, I didn't think so. That would be like Petraeus not getting his paycheck and having to fight the bureaucracy for it.

But then again, we are talking about the Army...

I'm thinking this guy was a burr under the saddle of some senior brass. And this is the kind of petty thing that can happen.

OK, that's just crap. Shame on Congress, the Pentagon, everyone involved in treating disabled vets like that.

I am reminded that Frank got a Purple Heart for a "shell fragment" in the eye during a sniper attack. The shell was from a boiled egg he was peeling and fumbled as he became nervous when he heard the sniper shot.

Yes....7 different versions if I am correct. COD: Black Ops seems to be the best from what I've heard but since he was injured in 2007 I think he was playing COD: 3.

I also read that as Call of Duty and was like, you can get a Purple Heart in that game?

2011-08-05 07:41:30 AM
Ok, let me get this straight, first, you don't give the poor bastard his medal that he eared by being wounded in action, make him fight for it for 4 years, then say fark it, and send him one in the mail COD!! Then, if that's not a insult enough, you can't even get his rank right, and when you say..whoops..we shouldn't have sent this COD, (and the soldier is supposed to get a ceremony along with the medal for his duty) you send him a money order with the wrong farking name on it. Can you guys really be a little more impersonal and uncaring? farking bureaucratic assholes punching your own ticket and fark everyone else right?

farking Christ, it's no wonder some soldiers go bugshiat and end up on a bell tower, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. This guy wasn't asking for a parade, or even a ceremony, just what was due him. He did his duty, got wounded, and you shiat all over him. Way to go. Should make a poster of this at the local recruitment center. Least then you would be honest about how you guys don't give a shiat for the common soldier. fark off and die.

Further article HurrpDerrp: "There are only two medals of the Army that you are a recipient of, you're not awarded, you don't earn, that's the Purple Heart and the Congressional Medal of Honor."

I have no idea what he's trying to say with this sentence, but any way that you slice it is wrong.

Purple Heart came COD=the name of a great country western song.

I had to read it a few times, but I think what it's trying to say is:
One is a recipient of The Purple Heart or the Congressional Medal of Honor.
One is awarded other Army medals.

So if the guy in TFA were writing his bio, he should put "I was a recipient of The Purple Heart," but if he wrote "I was awarded the Purple Heart" or "I earned the Purple Heart," someone would go all grammar-Nazi on him.

Personally I don't understand the guy's mentality at all, "Risk my life in Iraq when we shouldn't even be there? OK! Treat me like crap when I get back? WTF?!?!?" But I guess that's why he's wounded and I'm not.

The Pentagon only gets a budget of $2.25 billion per day. How do you expect them to pay for the postage of shipping Purple Hearts when money is that tight?

SouthernManDunWrong: Purple Heart came COD=the name of a great country western song.

Or, maybe Postmaster General, Patrick Donahoe, is now in charge of mailing Purple Heart medals and decided to go with COD to make some cash. It's just as likely as your "libby civilian with passive aggression issues" scenario.

It took a little while, but I knew someone would blame the evil liberals.

This article is full of fail. There is no Congressional Medal of Honor ... just the Medal of Honor. Neither medal is Army specific either. You'd think they could find one veteran, or someone with a child in the military, they could run things like this past for accuracy.

Yep, they called him the Sergeant Major of the Army.

Imagine what's going to happen when they start slashing defence dollars. Things like this will happen more frequently since personnel and VA benefits will fall to the budget ax, more so than stupid Pentagon toys.

That's what I understood him as saying. It's still not true.

I suppose you could claim that you don't have to actually do anything (besides maybe not ducking?) to qualify for a Purple Heart, but it's still "earned" by the person that it is "awarded" to. There is no super-secret military grammar code of law for it. You just call them "recipients" because "awardee" is a bit awkward.

Now, calling someone a hero in the wrong situation? That may ruffle a feather or two.

Meanwhile the fight to get PTSD recognized continues before a congress that finds any injury inconvenient for a battle that happened over there.

If PTSD gets Purple Heart status, one in five. States will salivate figuring out how to charge double for a Purple Heart license plate.

God I want to punch that biatch in the fat face.

A travesty but not the first one. I seem to remember a young soldier who was billed for the cost of the gear that was destroyed when he was injured by an IED. If I recall correctly a letter to his senator got the ball rolling to rectify that, but still, it never should have happened.

Yeah. Apart from his being wounded in a rocket attack in Iraq, and the fact that he was enlisted and not an officer, and the fact that he was combat and not behind the lines, and that Frank Burns had no problem getting his Purple Heart, this was just like that episode.
