Hooray! Maybe it's time for the Holy Hoover to suck all the christians off the face of the planet!

2003-09-09 09:26:57 PM
This is one of the super-disasters they show on the Discovery channel all the time.
There's another one about the volcanic island off Spain that's going to collapse and send a 500 foot tidal wave to engulf the entire east coast.

Didn't we already discuss this? Looks like my Magic Eight Ball says yes

Can't they just pour some Metamucil in that thing?

2003-09-09 10:36:06 PM
Rubbish.

That's the same Cornet that is listed here and in my opinion, he's a bit of a nutter.

Take for example, his study of AOP...Which stands for anomalous observational phenomenon and is a euphemism for UFOs.

*splat*

I heard this on local talk radio two weeks ago, same scenario.
I was the first one to know how we are going to die.

I used to live Gillette (Fuchole in NE WY), and I remember my geology teacher telling all us kids that we were in the "Oh fark" zone. Basically, when she blows, we'd have time to say "Oh fark" before we got obliterated. Heh. He was one crazy farker, my geology teacher was.

2003-09-10 12:27:26 AM
Have to love the disclaimer

Super Volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park will kill us all

not if that other super volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park kills us first

2003-09-10 12:33:48 AM
Hey ! The city of Townsville does just fine with a volcano in the middle of it. Why should we worry?

2003-09-10 12:34:09 AM
Wasn't a meteor supposed to kill us all too? Oh yeah that's not going to happen either.

Maybe if we throw Kenny G and Michael Bolton in, it will be appeased. It's worth a try.

I can't wait! I've got the Ski concession on Mount Yellowstone when it is over.

Here is another website this supposed PhD is associated with.

This is typical alarmist bullshiat. This man has 14 major articles published in the last 25 years, concerning paleoclimate and sediment mapping along the east coast. He is not a volcanologist or geophysicist by training or practice and as such, is not qualified to draw any sort of inference from the marginal and very recent increase in Yellowstone activity. I'll wait for the The University of Utah's Volcanic monitoring center or the USGS to publish an alert on the activity in the area.

There was a 4.4 in Yellowstone recently...but I wonder if he considered that Yellowstone suffered a 7.5 earthquake in 1959 (the Hegben Lake quake) and weathered it just fine. 45 years is barely a second geologically, and with the eruption interval this hot spot is on, if it didn't go then, what is the chance it will go now? People need to use logic and truly look at the facts.

another repeat for the mentally challenged

2003-09-10 12:43:54 AM
NARRATOR: Scientists discovered the universal problem was ash. 10 million years ago ash had choked them to death.

KARL REINHARD: It may have been a bit like pneumonia with the lungs filling with fluid, except in this case the fluid would have been blood for the ash is very sharp. There'd be microscopic shards of ash lacerating the lung tissue and, causing the bleeding. I would imagine these animals as stumbling around the thick ash, spitting up blood through their mouths and gradually dying in a most miserable way.

Save me Jebus...

2003-09-10 12:48:00 AM
again? isnt once enough doom and gloom enough for everyone? must we be warned of impending obliteration and horrible death every week?

2003-09-10 12:49:17 AM
Maybe he works for the terrorists...

2003-09-10 12:50:51 AM
(PointyTail: Maybe if we throw Kenny G and Michael Bolton in, it will be appeased. It's worth a try.)

I don't think so.

If you had Kenny G and Michael Bolton shoved down your throat, wouldn't you want to throw up.

I would.

Big ol' volcanic pukefest.

2003-09-10 12:50:54 AM
Oh lordy, it must be true if it's on Rense.com!

Sheot.. I lived in the city of Mt. Shasta California for about 3 years. The city is right next to the fricken mountain. People were always coming up with crap about how there was an earthquake and then there would be talk about eruptions. When I went to see Mt. St. Helens (I was born on the day it erupted so it was cool to me) they talked about the Shasta valley and had pictures of the valley that showed mud flows from thousands of years ago. Those "mud flows" were gentle hills that I drove through every day to go to work. But most of the people talking about the mountain erupting were hippies and people that believed that they talked to angels. Odd people in that town. Im sure that it will erupt soon (within a couple hundred years) or it could erupt in a week, but people do not need to freak out. Although.. if there were tons of earthquakes in a short amount of time.. I would want to get the fark out of there =)

2003-09-10 12:53:02 AM
Bummer.
Maybe it will happen at the same time that big ass meteor is going to hit us.
I hope I can get the day off work.

From what little I remember from Earth Geology in college, nearly the whole Northwest US from Washington to Colorado is a massive basalt flow. No, not just massive, so large the professor teaching the class couldn't even begin to describe the amount of volcanic activity needed to produce such a flow.

You folks out west are farked.

2003-09-10 12:54:47 AM
It's gonna rain buffalo burgers...

mmmmm....

2003-09-10 12:56:22 AM
In northern Idaho you will have to contend with several feet of ash and isolation... ...Drinkable water will sell at the price of gold.

If only there were a way to get uncontaminated water.. Like from underground or something.

2003-09-10 12:58:04 AM
theurge, not just a basalt flow; the Yellowstone Caldera is responsible for the desolation that is eastern Oregon and southern Idaho.

Plate tectonics have moved the continent over the hotspot like a hand over a flame, and that hotspot burned a swath of glass that includes lovely places in hell-swept Idaho like Hell's Canyon (deepest canyon in North America), Bruneau Dunes (largest sand dunes in North America) and Craters of the Moon (just plain ugly).

2003-09-10 12:58:33 AM
Sweet!!

2003-09-10 12:59:17 AM

We learned about this in Volcanology. When Yellowstone goes, the Moon would be a good place to observe it.

2003-09-10 01:05:39 AM
AAAAAAGHHHHHH! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

/oh, wait, everyone dies anyway. circle of life and shiat.

2003-09-10 01:06:20 AM
Everyone scroll back up and read the BBC article that rrtt22 posted. It has way better, non-sensational information that seems much more credible.

Personally I think this is pretty damn scary to think about.

2003-09-10 01:06:24 AM
I don't know why he's getting all down on all the ash that's going to be released. Sure it's pretty farking awful to breathe, but I live in the fallout from Mt. Saint Helens, and after all the ash settled into the topsoil, the crops around here were better than they'd EVER been! My dad went out into his pea-patch with a mask and was tilling the ash into the soil as fast as he could, and I'll be darned if we didn't have some of the best produce over the next few years.
