I wonder if they would have been able to identify him on the store's security footage if he hadn't shown his face to the woman. Better to have left the stuff on her porch, knocked and run.

/well, better not to have taken it at all, but still...

There is a chance that after a 5 year bit he may not re-offend. This may have a long-term happy ending after all

Er, it's kinda got a happy ending right now, if you overlook how the woman is all skerred of the big bad guy who felt so bad about stealing her stuff he returned it with extra. I seriously, seriously, hope the Police aren't ACTUALLY actively wasting time on this.

I would have taken odds before reading that this story was about either Bank of America, or Rupert Murdoch.

Came here to say this. At least tell the media "Oh,hey, all is forgiven" but be sure the cops track him down. That is, if you're really scared now because he knows where you live.

At least he demonstrated remorse. That's way more than most criminals are able to manage. And he did it before being apprehended, rather than after, which kind of shows he actually means it, unlike when people usually express remorse.

If I were her, I'd call this one done.

Finding where someone lives is trivially easy. I'm betting it's even easier if you have a GPS because it probably had a "home" waypoint in it.

Yeah, and you just know if they find him they'll hit him with theft charges, plus stalking for coming back to her house, and who knows what else they can trump it up with.

Seriously, he returned what he stole . . .plus interest, with a handwritten apology. The response of the police is to redouble their efforts to catch him because the victim feels more afraid now that the robber has apoligized and made amends?

I think what is even worse that the woman being more afraid is the cop.

FTFA: Jones said the victim is now afraid, adding that it's more important now than ever that police find him.

Which so happens Jones happens to be a female Deputy Police Chief.

Way to stay consistent ladies!

It would if it wasn't your home. Which, for him, it wasn't.

He had her wallet...Finding out where she lived couldn't have been that hard.

There are at least two lessons to be learned here...Do not leave your purse unattended...And do not steal unattended purses!...Bonus lesson...Don't try to do the right thing and make amends later because your victim may get even more freaked out and make a federal case out of it.

Since the guy pays attention to media coverage on this event, maybe it's not such a good idea for the woman to go around screaming for his head.

Follow up: woman mysteriously goes missing. Stupid man is person of interest.

Yeah, this was turning out to be a great story until I got to that part. It's totally awesome that the guy felt remorse on his own, and decided to make amends without any prompting (ie, being caught).

This woman is kind of an entitled asshole. She left her purse alone for 10 min? It's mostly her fault for not keeping the honest person honest.

I'm not a thief (it's copyright infringement...), but I would most likely take money I found unattended. Probably not a wallet, but it's best not to give me that opportunity to find out.

Or if there's somebody who wants to off her, congratulations, now there's somebody else to pin this on.

I can understand the woman being unnerved that the dude actually felt the need to see her at her home, but wondering how he got there? Seriously? That's just stupid. If he wanted to harm her, he'd have done so when she opened the door. He left the stuff, tried to apologize, and left. IMO, while $10 isn't much of a punishment for theft, it's more of a renumerance than most victims get.

Also, the part where the thief mentions that the purse was sitting there unattended for 10 minutes makes me believe that neither involved party is all that bright. What the woman should have said was "Your apology is a good start and appreciated, but your actions have consequences and you should face up to them and turn yourself in." Who knows, maybe he would.

Just to be a dick. Im gonna play devils advocate. What if this guy returns one day and attacks her? Then what? cops are idiots?

When I was like 8 I was in the supermarket with my parents and found a $50 bill (32 now and I still think how uncommon 50's are) on the ground. Pocketed it and didn't say a thing. On the way out we walked by this little old lady crying her eyes out about dropping a $50 and it was the only money she was going to have for a week and it was her grocery money. I stopped my mom and led her over to the lady and told her I found this. My mom beamed and the lady was so grateful she used it to pay (all the groceries had been bagged before she caught the fact she didn't have her money) then gave me the change, a fiver, to show her gratitude. So I got a great feeling and $5 which when you're 8 is pretty damn nice.

Put any farker's name in spokeo and you'll find out everything that there ever was ever about them. There're easier ways to select a beatin' ho than stealing their purse.
