"Canada has gone from brain drain to brain gain," Mr. Harper said

Phew, that eases my brain pain.

He's not likely to find any at Rob Ford's BBQ.

Yeah, I'm starting to hear rumblings about returning from my university cohorts who left Canuckistan in the late 90s

So, we have subsidised education, so people can come here, get their degrees, than move to the States for more money and less student loans.

And the answer is to give even more money to graduate students, so they can get even higher degrees and command even more money when they move to the States, at even smaller student loans?

Harper does need brains. OF COURSE grad students want to come here. They just don't want to stay here when they finish their schooling.

I'd like to see some independent verification. No offence Harper, but you're not the most trustworthy person in this country.

It really angers me that Gary Goodyear, our minister of Science and Technology, is a creatonist chiropracter who has never published in any peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Anyone with those kind of credentials who believes that they are capable of determining where our federal research funding should go is clearly an egotistical asshat.

F%cking Cons. The US' economy is in the ditch thanks mostly to their like minded brethren south of the border and the CPC now stand up to claim credit for the US no longer looking as attractive to professionals from Canada...

You cons are farking jokes.

Also.. given the poor state of NIH funding (can't speak for other research fields except biosciences), and the extreme competition for tenure track positions here in the US, you're better off looking elsewhere for gainful and more reliable employment.

This isn't good news at all. Some of us here depend on the best and the brightest being drawn down to the US, that way we rise to the top in their place. Now if all these brainiacs stay here what will us barely-competent-yet-able-to-fake-it-just-long-enough-to-get-the-job-types supposed to do?

Canada has a great employment market for the highly educated - if you are willing to live in Alberta or Toronto. I wouldn't count on your Masters degree in Chemical Engineering doing you much good in New Brunswick or Victoria.

Frankly, I think that was the point of appointing Gary to that position. But Conservatives have a history of this kind of thing..I present John Snobelen, high school drop-out and Provincial Minister of Education.

In a Ministry you want to neglect or discredit you put the least quialified person in charge, when it predictably implodes you say "see this Ministry is a waste" and start cutting.

The issue most people, including myself, had in this past election was that there really was no good choice. I didn't want to vote for Harper or Ignatieff and the NDP really stood no chance of taking power. Harper got his base excited, Ignatieff did not, the Bloc collasped and Jack did one hell of a job campaining that is why we have the Parliament we have.

Most of the Brain Drain Reversal is a result of funding and policy decisions made by the Chretien and Martin governments. Tri-Council funding has been decreasing under the Harper government (there have been recent budget increases but they don't offset earlier budget cuts) and these Vanier scholarships actually mean that fewer total students receive their own funding for graduate research. Despite the claims they don't "attract the best and brightest", some Universities have a hard time awarding them (and these scholarships are allocated with so many going to every University every year, not a common pool). They are massive grants that go to the same students who would have gotten grants in the first place.

The only reason we aren't likely to see a new brain drain in the immediate future is because the US economy is so farked that they are getting ready to cripple their own funding infrastructure for the foreseeable future.

Came to Toronto for my MBA, still here 6 years later. I become eligible for citizenship in October and I'm leaning towards staying... as long as I can figure out a way to spend December 15th - January 15th somewhere in the south every year. Where is this damn telecommuting everyone's been talking about for a decade?

I like Canada, I miss the US less and less every year.

It's obvious bullshiat to a lot of people, but now that it is in the bloodstream it will find its way naturally to the intended organs.

It's not enough to recognize it as bullshiat. We have to realize that to win an election against this guy, whoever goes up against him will need to be at least equal to him at this kind of bullshiattery, or else be be able to dissect it in a way that is presentable to the general public. Read entropic_existence's post. He's right, but anyone who gets on tv and says that just lost the point to Harper.

That's why I called it 'good' spin-doctoring.

Hey. Western Canadians got farked pretty hard by Laurentian Canadians, it wasn't just Trudeau. The reason the RCMP was created and expanded so quickly across the 49th parallel was to enforce the exorbitant taxes levied by you Eastern bastards. The Americans expanded westward much quicker, so it was cheaper out-west to buy from the Yanks rather than the Crown and her cronies.

So what does the Crown do? Enact high taxes, create the RCMP to enforce the taxes. Effectively ensuring the West has to support you high-stepping Torontonian farks. Bunch of farking thugs.

Why do you think Mulroney's free-trade was so popular in the West and unpopular in the East?

Maybe you should go back to grade 9 to learn the basic critical skills needed to discern trite canards conjured to support some stereotyped tidy cultural narrative from factual analysis.

The fact that Canada's political culture is on avarage less to the right than the US', does not entail the CPC being equivalent to the DNC. That is just epically stupid.

And frankly, my outrage explicitly leveled at the philosophy and tactics overtly championed by the conservatives, by definition, does not constitute arbitrary prejudicial hate as you paint it.
