I had the same theme party at my house once. We just called it "40's and Blunts" and everyone had a great time. We also had a Vietnam party during a July. We bought a bunch of fake plants, closed all the windows, had big pots of boiling water on the stove all day to create extra humidity, had Platoon on all of the TV's, and dressed in camo. It was more fun in retrospect; definitely an experience.

Its more complicated than that. White students are dressing according to media codes that signify on the theme of "blackness," which it itself a creation of white perception. Its a textile form of blackface, which is a complicated issue in American cultural history. The students know its vaguely 'transgressive', but I doubt they could tell you exactly how it mixes historical envy with 'outlaw rebellion,' emotionalism and racialism, because we don't teach young people serious cultural analysis until they get to college. If political conservatives had their way we wouldn't teach it at all.

Though this country is lawsuit happy, the reason a lot of these defendants like these school officials get sued is because the only thing that gets their attention is money.
