Regardless of what so many basement dwellers here think
'The Big Lebowski' isn't a very good movie and especially isn't a very good Cohen Bros. movie.

It is, however, better than 'Burn After Reading'.

What an utter piece of crap except for Clooney and the sex chair he was building.

I don't really know if it's a good idea for Steve Buscemi to show up. I mean, he might be out of his element.

Blasphemy on all counts. Burn After Reading was one of their weaker films, but still leagues ahead of most others. JK Simmons' performance alone invalidates your point, sir.

I mean, fark me. Say what you will about the tenets of the Coen Brothers, dude, at least it's an ethos.

Second. I think I would have enjoyed it more if thousand of drones had raved about it every time it was brought up before I actually got to watch it.

/Exception to the rule is Blazing Saddles and Blues Brothers.
//Yes I brought but Blazing Saddles and Blues Brothers in a Big Lebowski thread. You know why? Because the stuff I like is better than the stuff you like.

Precisely that.

It's not my absolute favorite Coen Bros. movie, but it's still pretty damn good.

Huh... I never thought to try that.

Interesting...

I'd read TBL was partially based on The Big Sleep (or some other Bogie movie). Don't know if I believe that, but I can see where such speculation would come from.

CSB time. I got banned from a forum because during a big thread about people's favorite Coen movies someone ranted on about how much TBL sucked and I responded with that line. One of the mods gave me a time out because I denigrated another poster. So I told the mod in a lot of words to diaf. Then I got banned.

I did that once. The color change plays strange tricks on the eyes... it made The Dude look remarkably like Humphrey Bogart and Maude look very similar to Lauren Bacall.

As soon as I read the headline, I was all like "Y'know, I bet the FARK hipsters have decided that TBL is a bit too popular for their tastes and have done a 180 on it by now".

And yep, there it was, second post. It'd be funny, if it wasn't so sadly predictable.

Nope. You're wrong. On both accounts. But thanks for coming and trying to get a roar up. Don't think any of the adults took you seriously though.

TBL takes repeat viewings to fully appreciate it I think. I saw it in the theaters when it came out was slightly Meh-ish about it. Then saw it when it came out on video and was on the floor laughing.
Millers Crossing is still my number one Cohen Brothers movies if anyone cares.

Actually I'll side with the douchebag about Burn After Reading. The Big Lebowski was definitely better than Burn After Reading, in just about every way. The only thing great about Burn After Reading was Malkovich's performance.

The Big Lebowski was a great movie though.

Indeed. Every scene in that film fits perfectly and is essential--there is not one superfluous scene and not one superfluous detail in each frame. Therefore, it's difficult to pick out a best or favorite scene. But if I had to, that scene would most certainly be one of them.

Absolutely.

It's in my pile I've movies I've seen a ridonkulous number of times. I've not seen it as many times as I've seen the Dark Knight, but I try to see it as often as possible because I'm in love with it. It is a cinematographic masterpiece indeed.
